Hi Ronni, yes I feel a real goose for the steps I took (in hindsight). As I work away (and am away from home for a further 2 odd weeks), I placed a copy of both (iPhoto and Photos) library files onto my 2TB external drive and using my Retina MBP to try and unpick this mess remotely from my Wifes MBP. A necessity as this happened the day prior to my departure. So i have the two files "iPhoto Library" and "Photos Library" both sitting within one folder on the external drive (each file is saying around 295GB from Get Info but not identical sizes). They are also still in place in the User>Photos folder on my Wife's MBP as I restored the iPhoto library from Trash using the "Put Back" command. When I attempt to open the iPhoto library (using the Option key method on my Retina), it reflects as IPHOTO LIBRARY.MIGRATEDPHOTOLIBRARY. Which would suggest that the library underwent the start of its transformation in readiness to be 'hard linked' with the Photos library. But the transformation was never completed. I do not have a backup I can revert to at any stage prior to the update - coz I blew away the Sparesebundle! Pete.

The first time you launch Photos, it searches your system for iPhoto and Aperture libraries. If only one library fits the bill, it imports that library. But you are saying your wife’s iPhoto Library was not in the correct location in Pictures... but was sitting in the Trash! It gets worse - much worse I am afraid. I don’t want to read anymore :( During the update I turned Time Machine off to prevent unwanted backups during the process of updating. I think this is a recommended practice anyway. Well, after the dust settled (but before running Photos) I turned TM back on and it goes through the Preparing Backup routine for a looong while and then says Backing Up 325GB!!! I pressed the cross to stop that and thought about it a bit. Running low on TM disc space and having done this previously (and never once having had to call upon the TM backup to retrieve anything in the 6 years of Mac ownership) decided I would delete the Sparesebundle file and do a new Backup from scratch . I suspect that the Preparing Backup routine spotted the iPhoto Library in the Trash and the Photos library in its normal home and detected there are two libraries to back up hence the order of magnitude of the backup. Anyway, now that I am over this, I still have the problem where neither iPhoto nor Photos will open showing my wifes previous images. When I launch iPhoto - I get a message "Aperture needs updating" so when I try that, it says the version of Aperture required is not available in the Australian Apple Store - so no good there When I launch Photos - I get the first time user screen. If I select Albums, I see the greyed image of the previous Events folders as Albums and the names of Albums are accurate per the previous iPhotos Events folder, but upon opening, nothing is visible. Still no images. Whilst in hindsight some of my actions have been not very good, I still don't understand why I can get at my images/videos? Whilst in hindsight now ‘some’ but almost all your actions have not been good from what I can ascertain from your email :( Anyone have any ideas how to get out of this pickle? Let us now exactly what Library files you have in User > Pictures please - and also if you have a backup of your wife’s iPhoto Library BEFORE you did the Update to OS X 10.10.3?
