Thread re-opened to add a new learning - - Time Machine only does “verification” of data on a network drive (such as Time Capsule). I assume this means sparse bundle backups.
TM backups on local drives (internal or external) have the manual "verify now” option greyed out. I assume this is the backups.backupdb file format.
