Hi John.
This sounds familiar to me.
I had a Canon printer until about 18 months ago.
Then suddenly it would no longer scan.

I spent a lot of time trying to rectify the issue.
I eventually emailed Canon.
They told me that they were no longer updating software for that printer.
So it was no longer keeping up with the Mac OS updates.

So I bought an Epson printer which I have used ever since.
