I've wrestled with those quite a bit and don't really have any idea what's wrong. The openssl verify call succeeds, which seems a pretty good indicator. Is ther some further diagnostic I could use? Also, FWIW, I did not use StartCom's single root cert "sub.class1.server.ca.pem" because it didn't seem to work. When I used their "ca-bundle" cert, the openssl check began working.
