On Saturday night's edition of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" the
$1000 question was "The director of Apollo 13 was also a cast member of
TAGS" Ofcourse the contestant knew it was Ron Howard; didn't even need
to use a life-line! The fellow from West Virginia went on to win
$64.000, got stumped on a question about that dad-burnt rock and roll

Hey
I hope everybody had a chance to see ole Ange on the Grand Ole Opry
tonite. He came out, told a joke, sang a song, and presented Earl
Scruggs with an award. It was nice. real nice. He sang the ole
mule song - what a treat.
I captured some of the video on my PC-Tv card here. The quality
isn't htat great, but maybe I'll send them to Allan and see if he can
find a use for it on the web page.

>Hi All,
Speaking of Veteran's Day, I know that Barney did his part to "defeat
the bloody Hun" during WWII in New Jersey. I want to say that Andy also
mentioned his having been in the Army. Anyone remember it?
>
In "Quiet Sam" Barney mentions his stint in the Army (he does not mention
WWII, however). He served at the PX library on Staten Island (ah b'leeve
that's NY, not NJ).
In two early episodes, Andy mentions that he was "over there [in France]
during the war," but he does not say that he served in the army. Maybe he
served in some other branch of the service, or maybe he was there as a
civilian (e.g. a correspondent or reporter.)

Was watching "The Apartment" last night on cable starring Jack Lemmon
and good 'ol "Otis" was in the bar in a Santa Claus outfit having a
few... He had a couple of lines also. Seems like Hal Smith was either a
bartender or a "lush" in most of his pre-TAGS movies.
Happy Thanksgiving !

Just to let you know, most of us named Andy get called Ange from time to
time, not just the Andrew Jacksons. The contraction theory is a good one,
but it doesn't explain my experience. What really has me wondering is
where a name like Opie comes from--maybe this has been explained before,
but would someone clue me in?
P.S.: If you ask me, the automated digest is just fine. Unless WBMUTBB is
ready to hire someone to edit the digest, I think we should be grateful for
the time Allan gives to the cause, and for any other volunteers who help
enrich our TAGS enjoyment.
Yeah, boy!

(NOTE FROM ALLAN: Thanks for the support, Andy! There's a great Mayberry FAQ
entry about where Opie's name came from that can be found on the TAGSRWC web
site. http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/ )

I saw "Dinner At Eight" (where Andy eats 3 spaghetti dinners in one night)
the other day. In this episode Opie appears in his Boy Scout uniform at
the beginning and ending of the show. I came up with three good trivia
questions:
1) What troop number is Opie in? (this is the easiest)
2) What rank patch is Opie wearing? (fairly hard, you need to know how the
old-style Scout rank patches looked to get this one.)
3) What uniform patch is "missing" from his uniform? (I challenge Paul
Mulik to answer this one! You need to know how what the old uniform
insignia were suppossed to look like and have a quick eye for this. Paul
may or may not know the first part, but definitely has a quick eye.)
Answers in a few days.

I wanted to write in and say that I can't believe where Mayberry shows up in
today's society. I am reading a book called Face of Deception by Iris
Johanneson (SP) and in one chapter there is a mention of Andy Griffith in
Mayberry. It is mentioned because the cop in the story had some bad run ins
with bad people and he has to explain to his friend (who thinks he is
wonderful and can't do anything wrong) that he is not Andy Griffith from
Mayberry. I read that and it made me smile. I mean Andy is everywhere.
Just thought I would share this with the group.
April
BTW I am now watching Andy on Opry and he looks great.

Hey Ya'll
I want to let you all know that Sharon DeSpain (aka
actress Peggy McCay) Andy's old flame from H.S.,
(according to Barney - 'one of the great romances of
all time') is no longer living and working in the big
city of Chicago. She was sighted last night on a tape
sent to me by my mother in a very small town called
"Silk Hope" in N.C. of all places! Strange cause she
said she really didn't care for the "small town"
atmosphere, but liked the big city. This was a movie
starring Farrah Fawcett who marries the son of Ms.
McCay. This lady unfortunately was blind, however,
she had great spirit and was not adversely affected by
this and looked as beautiful as ever. (Wonder if Andy
knows?).
I tell you this just in case they start looking for
her for the next Mayberry Union High reunion....
Just thought I'd let you all know.

It was great seeing Andy on the T and V again! Hope most of you who tuned in
for the Opry also tuned in to Opry Backstage for the interview with Andy and
Earl Scruggs.
I did tape it for my own use, which brings me to the second item.
Someone was advertising tapes for sale they had made off TV. Be careful!!
These are all Copyrighted shows and to tape them and then sell the tapes
could be a very bad violation of Copyright laws. That's all I will say about
that!

From: TAGSRWC Headquarters in Nashville
For folks who are interested in Andy Griffith's appearance on the Grand Ole
Opry Saturday night and didn't catch the telecast on TNN, here are some
highlights, as well as some off-camera info:
Andy was at the Opry to present fellow Tar Heel Earl Scruggs with a North
Carolina Hall of Fame award. After appearing with Andy Griffith on the
televised "Backstage at the Opry" show, Earl opened their Opry segment (also
televised) with "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," accompanied by sons Gary and
Randy and by TAGSRWC member Marty Stuart on mandolin and Stuart Duncan on
fiddle.
Andy, who had been kept secluded backstage, joined Earl and the others on
stage. He received an extended standing ovation (Yes, he said, "I 'preciate
it."). He told a short barbershop joke that George Lindsey had first shared
with him years ago. With Earl and company backing him, Andy (reportedly
playing a guitar he used on TAGS) played and sang "Whoa Mule, " the song he
had performed with the Country Boys on TAGS in the "Mayberry on Record"
episode. Andy, joined by wife Cyndi, then presented Earl with the N.C. Hall
of Fame award.
Andy wasn't feeling altogether well and departed the Opry House shortly after
making the presentation, but Earl Scruggs stayed around and shared a few
insights with me (able to be there thanks to the kindness and string-pulling
of Opry insider/TAGSRWC member Jim Driver) and some other fellow Goobers who
were all ears. Earl said that Andy had been the one who selected "Whoa Mule"
and that his second choice had been another Mayberry favorite, "The Crawdad
Song." Earl said that he had never before played "Whoa Mule" on banjo, but
you'd never know it.
By the way, Andy's Opry performance was his first Grand Ole Opry appearance
and his first time singing and playing music for a live broadcast...EVER.
Earl also shared that he and Andy and Marty Stuart and others had been at
Earl's house picking and getting reacquainted the night before. Andy played
his ukelele (the same one he used on "Matlock") while at Earl's house.
Although mutual admirers, Earl and Andy had met only twice before --
including one time on the TAGS set when Andy stopped production to go pick
with Lester Flatt and Earl, who had dropped by while in town filming "The
Beverly Hillbillies."
Since Andy was not feeling well, he had to cancel his scheduled appearance
with Earl on the Opry's second Saturday show, but TAGSRWC member Vince Gill
filled in for him.
The big news that almost was, was that another Mayberry star also happened to
be in Nashville and dropped by to see Andy at his hotel. If Andy had been
feeling up to doing the second show, the plan had been for him to bring his
fellow Mayberry star with him for a quick on-stage hello to the Opry
audience. That star was...Ron Howard! But, unfortunately, Opie's Opry debut
didn't quite materialize.
Bunches of TAGSRWC members and at least eight chapters (including WBMUTBB)
were spotted at the show. There will be at least one photo from the evening
in the next Bullet, and perhaps several will be on the TAGSRWC web site well
before then.
Sorry to be so long-winded, but what started out earlier in the week as just
a quick, routine presentation by Andy at the Opry developed into a pretty
interesting evening and story by the time it was all over.
Jim Clark
