What a joy Melvin Slaydon was everytime we saw him in Col. Tim's show at
Mayberry Days. he was a bright spot in that very well done show and everyone
in the show was always so kind to him, he will be missed......Dave & Pattie,

For those of you that have seen Don Knotts perform at the New Theater
in Kansas City and who have purchased tickets from
them, you may be getting a promotional pamphlet from them with tons
of photos of Don Knotts dressed up as Santa Claus. It's real cute,
using the line "are you tied up in Knotts over Christmas?" Also,
the KC Star critic recently wrote an article about how the most
popular shows there tend to use actors from TV, but that this doesn't
always work out. However, they ranked Don "tops" in both the crowd
pleaser AND the acting department.

I know that Andy Griffith and Jim Nabors are good ole
southern boys. What other TAGS actors and actresses
are originally from southern states?
Karen

(ANSWER FROM ALLAN: Don Knotts, WV; George Lindsey, AL; Jean Carson, WV;
That's some off the top of my head. I'm sure Paul will get us some more.)

almost took the plunge there
to, but I don't know what stuff is really worth. Is there such thing as a
price guide??
>

There is no price guide for older TAGS items, but here are some APPROXIMATE
prices. Of course, with any collectible the condition the item is in is the
determining factor. These prices are for items in excellent condition.

TAGS comic books (very scarce): $300-400
TAGS coloring books (colored in): $50-75
TAGS coloring books (unused): $200-300
TAGS soundtrack album: $100-$200 (stereo version is rarer than mono version)
National TV Guides with TAGS characters on cover: $30-50
Regional TV Guide with TAGS characters on cover: $50-75

Of course, when you're using eBay, the prices can vary by a HUGE margin,
depending on how badly somebody else wants the item you're bidding on. A
couple of months ago, one of the Mayberry Hawthorne buildings (seems like
maybe it was the Post Office) went for almost $400, which IMO is about $360
too much. On the other hand, the SELLER of that item was no doubt thrilled
that the bidding reach that high! BTW, for those of you who use eBay, my
userID is "squadcar."

I was sitting in my office last Friday afternoon when I saw the message
about Andy being on the Grand Old Opry. I was planning on going to nearby
Franklin on that following monday for a meeting that was to last through
Wednesday (I just got back). I thought, "Well shoot, I'll just go on over
on Saturday!" I've lived in Tennessee over 10 years and have never seen
the Opery. Saturday, I made the drive over and got a single ticket (there
were plenty) and enjoyed the show from the first row on the balcony. I
knew there were other wbmutbb folk there, but didn't know who to look for.
I'm sorry I missed ya'll. One other thing that wasn't said about the show
was that earlier in the night BR549 sang a cute TAGS oriented song "Don't
tell Andy, Don't tell Aunt Bee . . . me and Opie out behind the barn..."

I don't thing that Andy made any direct references to the show, but he got
the biggest ovation of the night and lots of other performers acknowledged
his presence there.

And for the mule song: That'un makes me cry.

May Melvin rest in Peace forevermore!!

I know Melvin did not do such a good job playing the fiddle at Mayberry Days,
but if you got a look at his fingers it is a wonder he could play at all. It
took courage for him to get out on stage and try for us, and we all enjoyed
it. I have a feeling had we known him when he was younger, he could have
played a tune on that fiddle that would have set our feet to tapping!

I for one will miss seeing Melvin at Mayberry Days and receiving the award at
Col. Tim's Talent Time.

Perhaps the entire "Front row center" could be named the Melvin Slaydon
Memorial Seats" and go for a premium price, say $10 more than the regular
seats, with the extra money going to a charity in his name. That way Melvin
could live on within the hearts of us who had seen him and loved him. I would
be more than glad to pay an extra price to have the honor of sitting there.

For the ones who were on stage performing with him, your pain must be
unimaginable to lose such a friend as Melvin.

Let us all stand and have a moment of silence for him at the next Talent Time.

If I can find a photo of Melvin from last Mayberry Days I will send it to
Allan and let him post it in the proper place for all to see, especially
those who never got to see him.

RIP Melvin Slaydon
