I have one of Aunt Bee's pay stubs from 1961 and she made $850. I assume it
was just for one episode.

Subject: Question about TAGS & Gomer Pyle on TV Land

Hey Folks,

I've been reading all the stuff on the Digest about TV Land picking up TAGS
& Gomer Pyle USMC and all the letters I read say the prints are (and I
quote from Jim's message in the last digest)

>But the prints TV Land is using will be extraordinarily clear and clean
looking. They may run special events with complete episodes from time to
time.

My question is how are such good prints obtained now when they haven't been
available in the past, and are local stations getting access to these too?

Also, I saw in one of the posts on the Columbia House tapes this:
>CH episodes are uncut, digitally transferred for maximum video and audio
quality
>from newly struck 35mm prints in Paramount's library (not digitally
enhanced,
>inferior 16mm prints like LaserLight's tapes;

How is this possible when the show was originally recorded on 16mm (at
least I was under the impression it was).. Perhaps Jim or one of the other
'technical friendly' people out there can explain this.

I notice some folks are interested in getting candlestick phones like the
one in the courthouse. They are a little on the pricey side, but I might
suggest you try the auction sites on the web. I picked one up for $175.
It works and everything. If you're wanting one like the one in Andy's
kitchen, you're looking for a hotel phone. Another option is to get one
that isn't working and restore it. You can find old phone parts (and
complete phones) at phoneco.com.

Some friends of mine are participating in a civics frolics show and they
are doing a spoof on TAGS (a respectable one I might add) and they are
needing to borrow a copy of the episode that has Barney doing the
Preamble from me. I can't remember which episode that is. Can anyone
let me know so I know which tape I need to pull for them.

                    Thanks a bunch,

Caught an episode of the old "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and who should be
seen strumming a guitar and singing "Barbara Allen" in a deep bass voice but
Mayberry's own guitar player, James Best. James was playing a philandering
farm equipment salesman who has an eye for the wife of Joe Flynn (from
McHale's Navy).
On Sunday night, the E! Entertainment Network had a two-hour special on
Gilligan's Island (with "Gilligan" Bob Denver, the second Dud Wash on TAGS)
and "Skipper" Alan Hale Jr, TAGS' Jeff Pruitt) and how the show came to be,
why it went off the air and what has happened to the stars since. It
mentioned when it went on the air in 1964, it was on CBS with a stable of
shows like Gomer Pyle USMC. When it came time to ax Gilligan in 1967, one of
the shows it mentioned was a strong part of the CBS lineup was TAGS.
Gilligan got axed because CBS Chief William Paley didn't like the fact that
Gunsmoke was to be given the boot, so Gilligan bit the dust instead.
Last week, there was a segment of Dragnet where Amzie Strickland, TAGS's
Miss Rosemary, played the aunt of a criminal Gannon and Friday were trying
to capture.

How can I get a copy of the Unforgetable Christmas -Lost Episode?
I would also like to get a copy of all episodes in numerical order. Is this
possible? [EMAIL PROTECTED]

(ANSWER FROM ALLAN: You'll be able to get the "Unforgetable Christmas - Lost
Episode (a fan-fiction story written by Joe Gritton) on the TAGSRWC web site
within the next few days. Joe just sent me that story along with 3 others
he'd written and I'll be putting them online soon. As far as the episodes of
TAGS good....no. There is nowhere you can get those.

The "store bought" videos of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS) are no longer
being produced. The company that had been producing the tapes lost their
license about 2 years ago and at this time there are no plans by VIACOM to
issure a license to anyone. The only tapes you can still get are those
you'll find already in stock in a particular store.

Another thing you should know is that there has never been a "complete set"
of episodes released on "store bought" tapes.

There are a few places you can look for the TAGS tapes that are still in
stock......

First, check at Weaver's Dept. Store here online at:
  <A HREF="http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/";>http://www.mayberry.com/t
agsrwc/weavers/</A>

Weaver's (the name we gave The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watcher Club's
(TAGSRWC) online presence) still has some of the TAGS video tapes and they
are listed so you'll be able to see exactly what they still have before you
order.

The other place I know of to try is American Classics. They have a selection
of the videos still in stock. You can contact American Classics at
205-985-3199.

Also, Columbia House Home Video: Re-TV is now publishing TAGS on video. 4
episodes per tape for $24.95 delivered price. These tapes are THE best I've
ever seen but right now they one have 10 tapes planned to produce.

http://www.columbiahouse.com/

That URL should help you find the TAGS videos.)

Subject: Floyd the Barber on the Radio

Just heard Howard McNear on a Radio Episode of "Broadway Is My Beat" from
12/24/49. He played a real-estate agent who was trying to stop some kids
from having a christmas party in a warehouse because no one had paid the
rent. When the Police Sargent tries to pay the months rent, Howard refuses it
because he wants a years rent in advance.

Can you believe that from our friendly barber? Well an ex-convict changes
his mind in the end and takes him to the party as well. You can listen to
this episode at www.radiospirits.com go to the "on the air" section and look
for the more radio spirits section and it will be on Thursdays selection
(you'll need the real player or media player to listen to it and a pretty
good internet connection)

It will no longer be around by this thursday so dont take to long to go look
for it since they only keep episodes up for a week at a time.

I picked up my newspaper this week and saw there was a local Business
called Morelli's. I was ready to take my wife to dinner (get the
special, or the pounded steak) when I realized it was a dry cleaners.
Maybe there's a nice restaurant called Goss's???
The next day the paper had an article about a little boy who got to keep
$50 that he found, that had gone unclaimed for six months after he
turned it in to his local police. Guess Parnell Rigsby never showed up
this time.
One more Life imitates Mayberry...as Mayberry imitates life.
A couple years ago my family and I were driving home from vacation.
Our van overheated. Once towed in, it was determined that we would have
to stay overnight as it was late in the afternoon and they had to get a
new part (Goober could have been on his boat too, I'm not sure). But
in this little town of Bellville Ohio...
* not 1 but 3 people stopped to assist. One man even gave me his card
and said to call him if we needed to spend the night at his house!!
We're talking 1997 here and my family of 5. I almost went just to see
if Aunt Bee was cooking.
* The local repair shop was very fair to us. The proprietor even loaned
us one of his family cars to use that evening to get to a hotel, and get
something to eat. We loafed and swam at the hotel. It was the most
relaxing evening of our vacation. I thought I had gone way too far
east and ended up in Mayberry.

Hey Thanks to all for the kind words on my story "An Unforgettable
Christmas" I'm glad that some of you enjoyed the experience with me.
