Dear Fellow WBMUTBB members: If you haven't seen Tom Hanks' latest film, The
Green Mile, by all means, do so, since a TAGS alumnus, Dabbs Greer, has a
prominent role. Greer, who appeared in the TAGs episode when Barney was a
real estate agent (Greer and Amzie Strickland played the couple going to buy
Andy's house when Opie spills the beans about all the problems with it,
Greer is well known for his role as the preacher on Little House on the
Prairie) plays the part of Hank's character as a retired prison guard in his
twilight years. Greer is prominent in the first half hour of the movie as
well as in the final half hour. Its long (three hours long) but well worth
it.

Aunt Bee of Orlando, I agree about Philip Gulley if he's the same author =
you were talking about. I got "Front Porch Tales" from a dear Mayberry =
friend for Christmas and it is a wonderful little book. I've read it =
twice already...he has SUCH a good sense of humor and he must be a big =
TAGS fan as well because he mentions the show and some of the characters =
throughout the book. I LOVE the book and would highly recommend it to =
anybody. I think he has a few other wit/wisdom books, too: "For =
Everything A Season" and "Home Town Tales". I bet they're both good =
ones. =20

Hey to all my Mayberry Friends! Lotsa luck to you and yers!

To clear up a few things...

The first TV Guide did have Lucy on it, but it was in the early fifties and
she was only in the top corner. Although she did appear on many subsequent
covers.

And on the Jack Gilford/Cracker Jack thing...his most memorable roles to me
would be in the movie Cocoon or on The Golden Girls as Max Weinstock, the man
Sophia married for 2 episodes.

I hope this fine Monday finds everyone in Mayberry doing well. It sure is a
nice day here in Florida. Kinda on the cool side, but still not bad. I sure
have enjoyed reading all the posts from all you GREAT Mayberrians. You all
really do feel like family to Martha and I. It's great to come home every
day and hear from you all. I just wanted to let everyone know that I have
redone my clock site, and all the pictures come up fine in MSIE now, and

Hey Charlie:

Thanks for letting the folks know about my visit to Norman Oklahoma. I have
that dinner down for the evening of the 19th which is Wednesday. Hope I am
right as I will fly to Norman on the morning of the 19th. Look forward to
being there and I think it is too cool as well that the Lord blesses me with
these kinds of opportunities.

I've lost the URL to Emmit's webpage, and would appreciate it very
much. I've been wanting a .wav file -- one where Barney says
something like "That's my job Andy . . . stalking, not fly killing."
Emmit has generously helped me out with a .wav file before, but I
forgot to bookmark his page!
Thanks!
Deon

(NOTE FROM ALLAN: Hey folks. Emmett's WAVs location is linked right from the
FRONT of the TAGSRWC web site. It's called "Sound Files". It's really hard
to miss and hopefully you won't have any trouble finding it. Y'all drop by
and visit the TAGSRWC web site now and again...you'd be suprised what you can
find on there. http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/ )

I was watching the episode "quite Sam" last night on tvland and I saw a scene
that I haven't ever seen before. Its where Andy and Barney were sitting in
the car watching Sam disk his field. Barney asks "what is he doing?" Andy
answers "he's disking it" he goes on about why he is disking his field at
night. Then explains to Barney that "this time of year he is planting wheat,
barley or lima beans" Barney says "he maybe growing marijuana or some other
illegal drug" i was truly surprised to hear that on TAGS.

lots of luck to you and yours
Charlie

Just chiming in on the TV Land edits of the episodes. We saw
Quiet Sam last night and I was surprised to see that they left in
Barney's speculation that Sam was growing marijuana when he was
farming at night. I haven't heard that part in a while. Also,
the epilogue was pretty nice too. Not sure what was cut out to
make room for these, but I liked seeing the different stuff.

Also - I caught Lester Scoby on Dragnet on TV Land twice in the
last week. That job at Weaver's must not have worked out. Both
times he was a seedy character. First he was a heroin junkie in a
flophouse and then yesterday he had rented a house and was making
illegal pills. Hmmmmm

>Only weird thing is who in the world would have chosen the name "Crump,"
but then maybe that just lent itself to the >realism of it all.

The part of Miss Crump was originally intended to be a one-shot, in other
words, when the character was created (episode 86, Andy Discovers America)
the producers had no intention of using her again in future episodes. They
didn't even give her a last name!

Regarding the name, I come from Kansas, and out in Kansas, the name "Crump"
has a LOT of class.

Just one more suggestion for a girl for Andy. I am surprised no one came up
with the obvious choice...the girl who wanted him more than anyone else -
Charlene Darling!!!

picture of Lucille Ball, although I can't be sure.

I've noticed that too. It does look like Lucille Ball, but I doubt if it
was issue #1; that issue would have been several years old at the time (it's
worth many thousands of dollars today). I expect the prop man put the issue
there on purpose. After all, TAGS was filmed at her studio (DesiLu). On a
side note, there's an episode of I Love Lucy in which Lucy reads a show-biz
magazine, and in small letters on the cover are the words "I Love Lucy!"

The prop guys took it one step further in "The New Doctor." There's
actually a TV Guide on display with Andy Griffith and Ronnie Howard on the
cover! It's the issue from January 28, 1961 and yes, young Mr. Howard's
name is spelled Ronnie, not Ronny, on the cover. You can see the TV Guide
on the rack when Barney reaches up for the door bell.

my comments following on:
<After I fixed Andy up with pretty nurse Peggy, Joe asked me who would
I fix up Helen with, and I really can't think of anyone from Mayberry.>
(from Debbie Debose)

Debbie...Of course we would never want to put asunder what the first
episode of Mayberry RFD joined (Andy and Helen) but I always thought
Howard Sprague was more Helen's type. They were both college grads
(a rarity in Mayberry) and both very good with facts, and intellectual
discussions. Don't want to start a moluage, just an observation.
(the midnight refereence was when Andy and his kissin cousin when for
walks leaving a jilted Helen and Howard back at the cabin)

I finally get it now Allan! To the question "Why doesn't Andy do more
TAGS related appearances, sign autographs etc" You have pointed out
many times, that he likes to be recognized for all the accomplishments
in his career and not just stereotyped forever as Sheriff Andy Taylor.
After watching the A&E biography they did on him, I finally get it.
He was so frustrated after his TAGS years that he could not get people
to see him in other roles. His TV show "Headmaster" failed for this
reason. After some up and down broadway shows, he finally hit it big
again with Matlock. The Andy Griffith Reunion Show (20 years later) was
then very special to him, because he could go back to being Andy Taylor
just for fun, without fear that he would never escape the Sheriff's
uniform in eyes of the viewers. That reunion experience with Don
Knotts, if I understood correctly, motivated him to include Don as a
recurring character in Matlock.

I saw the last half hour of Don's biography...It's his son a stunt
double (lookalike) of Athony Edwards or what!! (ER's Mark Greene)

Yes Kenny, TVland is edits the episodes. They have to cram a few more
commercials in these days. WTBS use to cut off the epilogue at the
end. It appears TVL has shaved a few minutes in the middle to bring
back the epilogues. I saw another new one last night. The pitch-in
party at quiet Sam Becker's after little Andy was born. a classic!

Thanks Allan for keepin us straight with the rules. Can you get
Barney's lawman theme music to play when we're readin that next time?
Rule #2 is a great idea.
uh 4-10, over and under, 10-4 under and out, uh, uh, goodbye
