For all the members of wbmutbb who have wondered about the snowfall in the
Raleigh area:
One day record of over 20":
one month record, both of which go back into the 1800s:
and, the season record is only 5" away.
Those measurements taken ar RDU airport. In my yard I had 15" and still have
most of it. Driveway has not been cleared, no snowplow has been down the
street so we have had no paper or mail since Monday. More is forecast for
this weekend, but whether it is rain or snow it is too early to tell.

>>While viewing last night's TV Land episode, I noticed that the desk
calendar on Andy's office desk (the kind where you turn over the page each
day) was set around the third or fourth week of January...Just another
inconsistancy that nobody thought of at the time.

Right, they never figured anybody would notice. Without reruns and
videotape, it's very likely nobody ever would have (except me - ha ha).
Except in rare cases where the date was an important part of the storyline
(e.g. "Barney's Physical"), they never went to any great lengths to make
sure the calendars were correct. The calendar seen in "The Christmas Story"
is at least turned to December, even though the days of the week don't match
December of 1960 (it's a 1959 calendar). You can tell it's December because
the "25" is a different color than the other numerals.
Ever take a close look at the calendar in the barber shop? It's always
turned to February.

You're thinking of Janet Stewart. She had speaking parts in several TAGS
episodes as follows:
Mrs. Ambrose in "Andy and the New Mayor" (cut scene): She drops off her baby

Lorraine Beasley in "A Wife for Andy" (mentioned above). Lorraine Beasley
is Andy's cousin in real life
Mrs. Jackson in "Goodbye, Sheriff Taylor": She is furious over the way
Otis' bungles his job as school crossing guard
In "The Bazaar" she is one of the women arrested by Warren for playing bingo

This has been mentioned before, but those of you who don't get TV Land on
cable, it is really inexpensive to get Dish Network. They run specials all
the time where the $99 equipment charge is reimbursed in the form of a
rebate. The monthly fee is less than cable, too. America's Top 60 package is
only $19.99 per month and America's Top 100 package is only $28.99 per month.
Plus the resolution is better than cable.
I'm off my soapbox now, but I will never go back to cable.

TAGS fans,
As I was watching TAGS last night a question popped into my mind that
was totally unrelated to the episode. Given that Barney probably graduated
from Mayberry Union High at the age of 18, but couldn't have become a
deputy any earlier than age 27 (based on facts given us during the show),
what did he do in between high school and deputying? We know he was in the
military for a while and could have straight from there to being a deputy
if he did about a ten year hitch. If not, what do you think Barney Fife
did during the ensuing years? I'm thinking he probably played pro
football, what with that rifle arm of his.
There's not as much of a question about Andy because, based on the
length of time he was sheriff, it's most likely he came home from the
service and ran for office (as early as age of 24!). But that does bring
up the question of who Andy's deputy was before he hired Barney or did he
even have a deputy back then?
Just askin',

Debbie- I've asked that question before but never got a reply. She and
Johnny Coons are seen as a couple several times. Also, in the episode where
the boys are selling the salve she and Johnny are next door neighbors - the
boys chase her inside her house trying to sell her salve.

My brother told me the other day that Don Knotts was a "Drill Instructor"
before he went into acting. Does anyone know if this is true.
(NOTE FROM ALLAN: No.. that is not true. There's a complete write up on that
in the Mayberry FAQs. Just go to the TAGSRWC web site and then to the
Mayberry FAQs link. Then do a search on "drill" and you'll get the whole
answer.)

I was just watching "Andy and Opie, Housekeepers" on a local station.
Watching the ending of the show started me "thinkin" a bit. When Andy and
Opie were leaving for the bus station to pick up Aunt Bee, they met Clara
Edwards on the porch. Then Clara proceeded to enter the house and start
cleaning. Now, assuming they were going to pick up Aunt Bee right there in
town (since the bus always stopped there in other episodes), AND assuming
they didn't get there too much earlier than the bus was to arrive, they
couldn't have been gone from home more than 20-30 minutes (unless the bus
was horribly late). Considering these things, Clara Edwards must have
worked like "greased lightning" to get that entire house (including all
those dishes with ketchup on them) cleaned up in that short of time. Not
only is Mayberry a wonderful, homespun, environment, but the water must
give women greater energy. I missed the TV Land broadcast of this episode
this month so I did not see the epilogue. Did it give an explanation of
where Clara got her power?

Buddy Ebsen, who originally was to play the Tin Man and some of the songs he

Hey, folks!
I just wanted to share a special moment in my life with you all. It happened
this morning as I was driving home from work (I work the night shift at the
icehouse, for those who don't know). The local radio station was givin' away a
gift certificate to the first person who could identify the MOST MEMORABLE TV
CHARACTER played by today's birthday boy, Howard McNear.
Let me tell you, it's a good thing I was all by myself on the President George
Bush Tollway at the time (5:30am), 'cause I'm just SURE I was weavin' all over
the road tryin' to dial my cell phone, roll down my window, throw quarters at
the toll basket, and shift my 5-speed car at the same time! But I got through
with the right answer, and WON!! Watchin' TAGS is its own reward, I know. But
to be winnin' a prize for knowin' about our dear Floyd Lawson is icing on a
very sweet cake. And the DJ's said my name on the radio and EVERYTHING! Not
that anybody heard it at 5:30am. But I thought it was exciting.
I'll see ya.

i would have to say Buddy Ebens from the beverly hilbillies
would be the voice paul is talkn about
he was supposed to be the orginal tin man but some reaction to the silver
make-up
caused him to lose the part but not before he had already recorded the
vocals to some of the songs
on the sound track and they were never re-recorded.
Ok Paul am I right?

Hey Paul,
Would this be Opie's hobo friend Buddy Ebsen? I think his songs as the
tin man
were used in the movie since they were recorded first. Of course, Jack
Haley had
to step in for the role of the tin man after Mr. Ebsen had severe reactions
to the
silver paint. BTW, there was a character name connection between TAGS and
WoO; they both refer to an Uncle Henry (Andy to handyman Henry Wheeler)!
