I hit the send too soon Superbowl Sunday pickups ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 14:47:39 -0800 (PST) From: Joe and Sandra Causby <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Stuff Good Morning Mayberry Speaking of things we have been noticing and wondering about lately.....I was watching the episode where Otis sues the county and Barney decides to get info out of him when he comes in for his regular night at the jail. Barney gets ready ahead of time and he has a nice tape recorder all set up to record his conversation with Otis and get the evidence he wants. Back in Season One, I recall that when Mr. Maxwell came to town and wanted to make a folk album, Barney is all tongue tied and totally intimidated by Mr. Maxwell's tape recorder and gets all nervous about talking into it. But, Mayberry being progressive, by the time Season 5 rolled around, they had really modernized electronally and ol' Barn was completely at east with the recorder! Still couldn't hold his "mulberry squeezins" too well, tho..... Is this more than a coincidence? Ron Burtz, Virden IL > It's not a coincidence; the gas-pumpin' Pyles were indeed named after Denver Pyle. The name "Gomer" comes from the Bible. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 18:37:55 -0600 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Wormser >And then we have at the bottom of the credits, left hand side, Wormster, and a name to go with it. Please, won't somebody tell me what a wormster is? Was a scene cut out? Is this wormster guy the dude who sold worms to Andy? > I think what the credits really say is "Wormser." I say "I think" because over the years, the credits were re-done and I don't know if you saw an earlier version or a later version (they may have changed the spelling). Anyway, this is a case where somebody goofed; the name in the credits doesn't match the name used on screen. The game warden introduces himself as Peterson, but in the credits he's called Wormser. BTW, the warden was played by Colin Male, who also served as the show's announcer (you know: "The Andy Griffith Show, starring Andy Griffith; with Ronny Howard, also starring Don Knotts") - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 19:50:42 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V2 #30 In a message dated 1/28/00 3:07:44 PM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Many folks have guessed Buddy Ebsen. With Paul's clue however, I'm going to guess him again. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 17:31:49 -0800 (PST) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Ruth Stanley) Subject: The great Oz Paul the man who played the Wizard was Frank Morgan. He also played the gatekeeper in the movie & the man with the trailer at the begining of the movie. I don't recall seeing him in any TAGS episodes, but he played in numerous movies throughout his career & was a great favorite of mine as was Buddy Epsen. On the Wizard of OZ DVD, under the Buddy Ebsen section of the bonus materials, it specifically says that both cuts of "We're off to see the wizard", that was used in the movie, incorporated Ebsen's voice. So give those answers correct credit, even though they're not what you're looking for. - -Bob ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 18:50:04 -0500 From: Michael Burch <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: (no subject) HIII Gang!!! My Ten Favorite Episodes, and why ................................ Just for fun, here's a list of my 10 favorite episodes and a 'brief explanation of why. Anyone else care to post their faves? Or comments on mine would be welcome also. 1.Cyrano Andy - You just can't beat the early acting of all 4: Andy, Ellie (at her best!), Barney, & Thelma Lou. (this one puts my wife in stiches, and neither of us are big fans of the real early episodes). 2.The Pickle Story - no doubt about it, that's a pickle! 3.Andy On Trial - Takes the heart and soul of the show and gives it a heavy dose of reality. Barney at his best serious acting. 4.Barney and the Governor - Barney is absolutely in total control of the show with his acting, "doesn't anybody ever clean this crock?"' ... a million laughs! 5.Man In A Hurry - Mayberry in a nutshell. 6.Mr Fair Ernest T. Bass - the ultimate poke at high society with superb acting from ET, and Barney 7.Barney & Thelma Lou, Phfftt - Barney's outbursts are simply stellar ...from the over-confident to the out-of-control. Gomer's great in this one (ain't you gonna kiss her Barney?") 8.Barney's Physical - from serious to 1st class situational comedy to silly ... 9.Andy & Helen Have Their Day - this is the one we got our chapter name from ("Which Andy Taylor Are You?") ... "say it again". 10.Goober Takes ACar Apart - I'm not sure what magical qualities this episodes possess but I could watch it over and over and over and over ................................... "I said I'll be there, and I'll be there ..." Here are the Honorable Mentions (IMHO): The Cow Thief, Convicts At Large (Floyd is brilliant), Aunt Bee's Medicine Man (Bee's tour-de-force), Opie The Birdman (sheer scripting & writing genius), Goober and the Art of Love, and A Case of the Punch in the Nose (classic make-believe, small-town America) ....... Hey, they're all great .... I just felt like adding my 2 cents!! Comments welcome .. "I'll wait ... " best to all, Michael Burch, Carrboro, NC founder of the "Which Andy Taylor Are You?" Well, they are, but it's MATLOCK! Who wants to watch a whole day of Matlock??! Is it because TVLand has Andy now? My local stations still show TAGS. What gives here? Now Daniel, my Blues playin' Texan, how you you say that? When I put together a few words that come out good and send it to the Digest, it's like I'm standin' right up on stage downtown at Founders Day in Mayberry. The Mayor has spoke, his ugly daughter has sang, Jim Lindsey has performed, the ladies have presented me with a pie and I'm standin there in front of 1400 of the gosh-darndest nicest townsfolk ya'd ever want to meet...and they're listen' to me. How can that be a waste, my friend? But just to show's ya that there's no hard feelin's I wrote you a Blues song...so you can perform it at your gig down there in Lone Star land. .....the scene Barney is in the quiet courthouse at night. He's manning the jail because they're expecting a prisoner from the state police. Andy had a committment at school because Opie was in a school play. Barney's thoughts.... (I gotta let the guy go to the school program. He's a family man ya know. His place is there with the boy. I had plans to go to Thelma Lou's tonight, but duty calls. Here I am lawman Fife just makin' another sacrifice for the people. It's my job...I'm the brave civil servant, keepin the peace, contolin' the riff-raff, maintainin' the American way) As Barney guides a broom slowly around the room the only sound is from the staticy radio in the back playing some music. Barely audible but persistent is the rythym of a Blues singer. Barney looks around to see that the door is closed, he straighens up, hold the broom now as if it's a microphone stand, makes masculine mischevious sneer on his face, and picks up the beat of the Music (ya goota git the Blues sound in your head now for this to work) Bouiwgh Bouiwgh pum pum (Barney starts to sing) I got da Blues Bouiwgh Bouiwgh pum pum The Lone-ly Dep-u-ty Blues Bouiwgh Bouiwgh pum pum Yah, I got da blues Bouiwgh Bouiwgh pum pum Cause I'd ruther be at Thelma Lou's .... I'm a woman-lovin' deputy, a one woman-man I ain't no Casanova, But I do the best I can Yes I'm a woman-lovin' deputy, a one woman guy And when I am without her, I so loney I could cry Oh Baby I'm so lonely, so really really lonely,..
