OK, my second and (I hope) final try: This is a question that may have
been mentioned before, but not while I've been around here.
Did Opie have another teacher after Miss Crump? It seems to me that
as soon as she arrived in Mayberry straight from the Witness Protection
Program (a theory of Lydia and me) she was put in charge of Opie's class and
just kept on getting promoting along with that group. Were they that
special? Or was she? How would she know? Or how would they know? It's not
like either one had a lot to compare with.
I'll never, ever believe she was trained to be a
teacher. No elementary school teacher writes a thesis on underworld
crime; nor is it good manners to criticize a former teacher the way she
did--she said the class was woefully behind schedule--because you never know
what the other teacher may have had to go though and besides it's just not a
very nice thing to do; and she really shouldn't have jumped on Andy as soon
as she did; she would have looked much more professional if she had made an
appointment and calmly asked him for his side of the story about the
Opie/boys' issue. Talked it out. Not gotten so upset. Parents and adults
working with children should know how they are going to use information for
their own benefit. All these things Helen would have
known and would have been trained how to deal with IF she had been
educated as a teacher. She just seemed to me that she didn't have a clue how
to handle those boys or the sheriff. But then she ended up
marrying Andy, and getting moved to every class those boys did, so maybe she
knows a whole lot more than I do! Or maybe that's why education
is in the mess it's in. What did Barney say, "Why can't things be like the
good old days when you ended up hating your teacher? Things were a lot less
complicated."
Meanwhile, I'll do what I do best, watch out for gold trucks. Laura Lee

Howdy Folks:
It just occured to me to tell you that when I was a mere youngster, the
guy who originally whistled TAGS theme song came to my highschool and
whistled it right there in front of us in assembly. I have long forgotten
his name, but I'll bet one or two of you remember him.
I went to Sandy Springs High School in Atlanta, GA. and I can't for the
life of me remember WHY he came to our school to perform. Maybe he was in
town for something else. Any way, I still remember his performance to this
day, and how absolutely PURE his whistle was. It was an inspiration. I
remember him saving something about how his whistle was copyrighted or
protected in some way, and it could not be used or copied without his
permission. He was very proud of his whistle!
So far, that's as close as I've ever gotten to any TAGS personalities,
but my life aint over yet!

Hal Smith showed up yesterday afternoon as a country Coroner on Ellery
Queen. Played a pretty crusty character. Then on Gomer, we got to see
Mrs. Lucens (sold the bed jacket) in the Colonel's kitchen plus Amzie
Strickland was the nanney.
And it was fun to hear Johnny Coons speak when Andy and Barney were meeting
Virgil's bus. I watched it both times last night just to get to hear that.

That story about Elvis getting the idea for "Jailhouse Rock" from Barney was
great! Made my day.
I'll bet most of you folks didn't know that Elvis Presley was a fan of TAGS.
Doug Dillard (the banjo player in the Darling family) told me that he once
saw Elvis Presley in a Las Vegas hotel lobby. Doug said he had always
wanted to meet Elvis, and he knew he would never get another chance, so even
though he was nervous he walked up to him to say hello. The way Doug tells
it, Elvis got a big smile on his face and said, "Hey, you're the guy on The
Andy Griffith Show!" and then they sat down and had a nice talk about Andy
Griffith and the music business.

I was just watching "Andy and Opie, Housekeepers" on a local station.
Watching the ending of the show started me "thinkin" a bit. When Andy and
Opie were leaving for the bus station to pick up Aunt Bee, they met Clara
Edwards on the porch. Then Clara proceeded to enter the house and start
cleaning. Now, assuming they were going to pick up Aunt Bee right there in
town (since the bus always stopped there in other episodes), AND assuming
they didn't get there too much earlier than the bus was to arrive, they
couldn't have been gone from home more than 20-30 minutes (unless the bus
was horribly late). Considering these things, Clara Edwards must have
worked like "greased lightning" to get that entire house (including all
those dishes with ketchup on them) cleaned up in that short of time. Not
only is Mayberry a wonderful, homespun, environment, but the water must
give women greater energy. I missed the TV Land broadcast of this episode
this month so I did not see the epilogue. Did it give an explanation of
where Clara got her power?
Anita (wondering if we could get some of that powerful water here in
Indiana)

I don't know what the reply alert was all about that Joe G wrote about in the
last digest. I always highlight what I want to reply to and click reply and
proceed to type in my words of wisdom and NO ONE on this earth has ever told
me that it printed the entire original message. Is This really true? I
don't believe it. Somebody's pulling my leg - please tell me this isn't
true. Surely I'm not that goobery. I don't want to pay a $4.00 fine and
certainly don't want to be incarcerated in cell #1.

OK, I'm in TAGS withdrawal now and the last drop of milk of human kindness
has just flowed from my veins, so about all I have to do now is think--and
that's never a good thing for me.
What I am thinking about today is this: I like the Mr. McBeeVee episode. And
the line, "No, no, no. But I do believe in Opie," is as good a line as you
can have. But that episode aired when Opie would have been around nine,
and doesn't that seem a bit old for a child to play with an invisible horse
AND still believe that others can see it, too?
Also, the way Opie described Mr. McBeeVee bothers me. This little
guy is really bright, and at age six he described a still (thinking
it was a flower growing machine) to perfection. Since Opie lived in
town, surely he had seen men working on power lines or even a phone
line (well, not sure about that one) before. But certainly he knew
enough to know Mr. McBeeVee was a workman, not a man walking in trees?
Not a normal, intelligent nine year old. Six years old. Yeah. But nine
really stretches it.
Oh, well, maybe I have been thinking too much. I'll get my head out of
the bucket. I call my cable company every day, they promise nothing.
Honestly, you'd have to go to England to get a worse choice of programming.
Just house building and cartoons, and a little smut on
E. (Lydia and I only watch it so we can feel superior to the others who
watch it for enjoyment. We know it's wrong and we fuss at it the whole time,
so it doesn't really count against us. Lydia says she read that somewhere in
the Bible.)
