Did y'all notice that tonight's episode of TAGS had Helen Crump's first appearance, just as Gomer's had Luanne Poovey's first appearance. It must have been their theme tonight. Why is it they go to that one but not to Mt Airy? Curious. WS >> Mayberry Days is a "Fan" event. Their purpose is not to bring cast members to Mt. Airy but instead to focus on the Fans of The Andy Griffith Show. Mayberry Days is a celebration of Mayberry and all the things it has meant to so many folks and to tell the truth when we have too many of the cast members there it changes the event. For instance, this past year when George "Goober" Lindsey was there, look at how many folks you had complaining that they didn't get their autograph. I'm not blaming George for that but when the cast members are at an even it changes the way the fans of the show react. They (the fans) don't realize that the actors don't plan on spending the entire day, or 3 days in Mayberry Days case, acting like their character on TAGS. The special thing about Mayberry Days to me was that first year I was there and you could walk through the town and actually see "Barney" and "Ernest T." walking around talking to folks...interacting on a personal level. "Barney" (David Browning) and "Ernest T." (Phil Lee) where present just about ALL the time! Anywhere you walked you were bound to see one of them and to be able to walk up and share Mayberry memories with them. Ernest T. singing to the ladies or dancin' and Barney "makin' his whole body a weapon"....what could be more fun. Don't get me wrong, meeting the cast members is a GREAT thrill for me and I wouldn't trade it for anything. But, at Mayberry Days, it's different. I enjoyed walking around meeting other Fans of TAGS and TALKING to them. Talking and visiting......old friends. At most other events, you just don't have time to visit with the other fans because the event is one day or only several hours long. In this reguard, Mayberry Days is special and different and since we DO have Mayberry @ Meadowview and some of the other events filled with our "real" Mayberry friends, I kind of like Mayberry Days being a little different. Just my thoughts....sorry to ramble. I don't think they would have gone to the trouble and expense of gathering the cast and crew together for a photo that was basically just as a prop. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 08:13:25 -0500 From: "Dan Goodwin/Jobscope" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Minor Characters Watch your rules now on "minor" characters. Floyd and Otis don't qualify as minor under the episode limit rule. Ernest T. is a valid candidate because he only appeared in 5 episodes. Now, you can vote for these characters if you wish, but you're just wasting your vote because the BEST minor character is none other than our own "little fat mayor" Pike. You know when we present him with the award, he's going to want his daughter to sing "Flow Gently Sweet Afton." dan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 13:18:24 GMT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Jeff Krentz) Subject: Re: Leave it to Beaver >I've watched TAGS for years because of TBS and WGN. Now that I can see >LITB again, I see quite a resemblance to TAGS. LITB did not have as = many >unique and interesting characters as TAGS, but it still is a good show = to >let children watch. I also catch LITB most nights after the 10pm Ange on TBS. I've got a little piece of advice for young Theodore that would have kept him out of most of his scrapes. Here it is: "Don't listen to Whitey, Gilbert, Richard, or even sweet lovable Larry Mondello, they always get you into trouble." That would have made for some short episodes also, I guess. (hah) Beaver and Wally were the same kind of boys as Opie - weren't they? I just love the Beaver episode where Beaver and Wally are chatting while they simultaneously "stage" their bathroom to look like they had taken their evening bath. Tub water is run and drained, towels unfolded and sprinkled with water, toothbrushes moistened, even some dirt from the turtle crate thrown in the tub for an artificial evidence ring and not a word passes between them about it. Hilarious. =20 Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2000 09:46:49 -0600 (CST) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: favorite character I don't wanna be pushy but of the characters who only appeared once, Bert Miller is my all-time favorite. When I was a little kid we had a man like Bert who came around about once a month. I never knew what his real name was - we just called him the 'Raleigh Man'. He had that big old suitcase full of anything you could imagine - it was quite a thrill for a 5 year old. He wasn't pushy either. It's almost insulting to call any character minor in this fine show, but what I mean is anyone other than Andy, Barney, Opie, or Aunt Bee. You know, when I opened up the nominations I wasn't even thinking of the non-speaking roles until Gloria, another fine noticer, chose her picks (Sarah and Juanita). So I guess, we need to divide this thing in speaking and non-speaking roles (and I would consider Johnny Coons a non-speaker even though he did have a small speaking part, since he has such an excellent face and is usually known for standing out in a crowd). But what do you think? My pick for non-speaking role would be Sarah, with Leon coming in a very close second (he's awfully cute and willing to share his sandwich and listen to Barney's troubles). But Mayberry couldn't function without Sarah. Bless her heart! She always seemed like she was sick, what with her sore throats or her aching feet. Or else she was taking care of her mama after she broke her hip at the bowling alley--bless her heart! But you have to hand it to Sarah. Aside from its unpredictable hours--and did she ever get a day off--I mean, did she ever have a replacement?--she had the best job in town. No standing on her feet all day (don't know why they ached, maybe it was from waiting on her mama after she came home from bowling); no working out in the cold or hot weather; and she always got to hear the latest gossip. What more could a girl want? And I think Sarah knew she had it pretty good (aside from the not ever having a real day off thing, except Sundays when she could let the Sisters take over). That's why she never grew too old. And never married. Everybody loved Sarah and depended on her. And she felt the same about them. Laura Lee Hobbs A seed was planted; an obsession was grown. In answer to Dan Goodwin's question about non-speaking characters: If you mean recurring, onscreen characters who never spoke there are only 3: Leon, Mr. Schwump and Mr. Branch (Taylor's neighbor who just nods his head). You can't really count the Darling boys as they sang (and even spoke in one episode to praise Aunt Bee's cookin'). If you really like the minor characters (as much I do) you might like to peek at this week's "Mayberry After Midnight" column that I posted at the following address: http://community.webtv.net/RedAkin/MAYBERRYAFTER I hope that I'm not stepping on any toes in case anyone else is publishing a similar column. It's just my way of paying tribute to Mayberry's lesser-known residents. Praise to Allan for this forum. He's a bird in this world! Since most of us would love to live in Mayberry and interact with the townsfolk, this digest is about as close as we'll get.
