Uh, Gary, maybe you'd sell more tickets if she promised NOT to sing (I've
just got to be honest with ya. Her voice could stand some improvin').
Anyway, I've always wanted to meet her -- too bad I won't be able to attend
this year.

Don't forget, she also appeared in one TAGS episode: "Big Brothers." Howard
Sprague found her very attractive; unfortunately, he was supposed to be
helping her brother with his homework. On the big screen, Ms. MacRae was
the voice of Lady Fish in "The Incredible Mr. Limpet."

In regard to the letter from "Sweetly Disposed", I have also=
 noticed
that some of my answers are marked "Wrong" when I know for a fact=

that they are "Right". I can say that I have played at least one,=
 and
maybe two, complete games without a glitch. Kinda makes ya wonder=
 if
the developers of the software have ever seen the show!
So now instead of "testing" my knowledge, I simply try to see how=

much more I know than those that wrote the program!

Now, I hope I don't come over as sounding negative, since this site
is supposed to portray all the good things about our favorite show, BUT,
I just have to respond to the recent talk about a re-make of TAGS.
First, if "Hollywood" was going to make a movie that exactly showed
Mayberry the way it was do you honestly think the average moviegoer
would pay to see it? No way!
Second, how many re-makes have become classic movie watching? How
many new "Leave It To Beaver" or "Beverly Hillbillies" videos do you
suppose have been sold? Can't imagine many.
Third, what type of movies make the big bucks today? Of course,
those with violence, put downs, s--, and other negatives. Isn't this
what makes money for the Hollywood bigwigs? Why then, would they want
to re-make a movie to satisfy those of us that want TAGS to remain as it
is (or was). Gee, if that's the case then let's all continue to watch
our re-runs of the original show and let the re-make happen, shown, bomb
out, and put away in the archives of "disaster" films.
For me nothing will ever take the place of the original and
expecting the Tim Allen's of the world to try to re-capture that
feeling is setting us up for a BIG disappointment.
There, I've put in my two cents worth and I hope I didn't offend
anyone but felt I had to respond.

Subject: Gomer's Nice, Real Nice

I fell in-love all over again last night. And who, you may ask, was the
object of my affection? Simple. Gomer. Well, to be exact
it was the Gomer and Mary
Grace episode, and a sweeter/funnier show never aired.
Remember the part after Gomer has shown Barney and Andy all the fine
things he has bought for his blind date with Mary Grace? Now, we
know this boy doesn't have any money, but he goes all out 'cause
"this could be the one." God love him. When Andy tells him not
to over-expect, he knows Barney and Andy are trying to warn him
about something, but he's not quite sure just what it is. He then
asks one of the most poignant questions I have ever heard asked in
my life. Gomer asks the guys, "Is she too pretty for me?" I mean,
man oh man. When's the last time you ever heard of anyone being
worried that his/her blind date would be too good looking for him?
But this sweet, sweet boy was actually so tender-hearted that he
worried about being a disappointment to Mary Grace! If that don't
clutch your heart, you ain't got one!
We come to the night of the date, and when Opie asks Gomer if he's
ever
been out with a girl before, Gomer replies, "Do cousins count?"
Funny stuff, yeah, but don't it make you want to cry if you
ponder on it for too long? 'Cause a guy as sweet as Gomer should
have had a special girl by then; he just should have, that's all there is to
it. Someone to really appreciate him and his kindness. (And if there
happens to be a pervert out there--and I doubt it among us--who even THINKS
Gomer has been dating a cousin, shame, shame on you! Obviously, he's talking
of "going out" in strickly platonic terms.)

And, of course, the tear jerker of all times, the scene when he
leaves, seemingly abandoning poor Mary Grace, while
everyone misunderstands, only to discover he had run out to find
Mary Grace a "corsage" like Helen and Thelma Lou were wearing,
having to go to two or three different stores to find one with a
"little bit of pink in it to match [her] dress," (and probably using
up the very last of his money). And his reason? "It wouldn't be
right, Mary
Grace, for you to go to the dance unadorned." And if that don't
clutch your heart, you just go ahead and resign from the human race.
OK?
Who would have thought Gomer could possess such gentlemanly grace?
Well, I think the boys had their clue in the way he had outfitted
himself for the dance, and in his concern that he might disappoint
Mary Grace in not being "good enough for her,"--remember he thought she
might be too pretty for him, while Barney called her a dog-- and in his
over-all
nervousness at Andy's house. So, Andy should have ran after him,
maybe, to find out exactly what was going on.
But, whatever, this kind of writing shows why Mayberry can never be
recreated. It was able to combine humor while it
showed the frailties common to all human beings. No one thought much of our
Gomer. But when push came to shove, Gomer came through with a style and a
grace that surpassed them all. He really had a chance to shine in this
episode (even more so than in the ones where he had to chance to sing), and
his character came through brillantly.
"She's nice. She's real nice."
So are you, Gomer. So are you. And who in Hollywood could ever fill your
shoes?

I love gold trucks, dime stores, Gomer, and TAGS, and nobody had better
mess with any of them, Laura Lee Hobbs
