Now that the Squad Car Rendezvous has another name, maybe now's the time to
start our Gold Truck Rendezvous. Anybody got a replica of the Gold Truck
except Laura Lee Hobbs? (by the way, Laura Lee, you've got to stop parking
that thing in front of the market on Tuesdays, you know what's when they
sweet the sidewalk.)

Subject: A different Andy movie!

Hi all!

I know some reference has been made to a film to be released By Billy Bob
Thornton that also stars Ange. Thought you might enjoy the following.

Saturday night I attended a concert by John Prine (who I had always wanted to
see but had never seen perform live before). He put on an excellent show in
Cincinnati. Those of you familiar with Prine may know that he just recently
recovered from surgery/treatment for throat cancer. Fairly early in the show
he spoke about this, and what follows is a paraphrase of what he said:

"A lot of you know that I had throat cancer recently. I couldn't sing for a
while there...well, I never really could sing [:-) John's an excellent
songwriter and I think he has a great voice, but it's definitely not a
trained voice!]..but for awhile there I really couldn't sing! I've always
considered myself pretty lazy but I was getting bored recovering, sitting
around reading comic books. I was trying to figure out how to get back to
performing when I got a call from a friend of mine, Billy Bob Thornton, who
asked me to be in a movie. I said sure, seeing as how I've been in so many
movies... [:-) though he has acted a bit] In the movie, I play Billy Bob's
brother and Andy Griffith plays our dad! [Thunderous applause from the crowd]
Yeah, I tell you, it confirmed something I've suspected for a long time--I
think Opie's my stepbrother! {Loud laughter and applause as he broke into a
song involving whistling and fishing.]"

And to boot, just before one of the music breaks in the song between verses,
John yelled out, "Let's go fishin', Opie!"

I have an old Mayberry Union High t-shirt which has seen better days. It's
gray with orange block letters. I've plumb worn it out and would like to
find a replacement. Any one know where I can get one?

Thanks.

Re the engagement (via kissing square on the jaw) between Gomer and the
   groovey Miss Poovey

Oh, now Miss Poovey, don't go getting your drawers all in a wad. I'm not
trying to take your boyfriend away--not that I could. I'm just pointing out
what a sweetie he is.
In fact, I think he's real lucky to have a pretty girl like you to like him
so much.
But you better know this. If I ever hear tell of you mistreating that boy,
I'm gonna be all over you, you hear? 'Cause that boy lies right near my
heart (right after gold trucks, dime stores, Andy, Barney, Floyd, my dear
Mr. Darling, my beloved Lydia, Regis and his signs, Aunt Bee, Opie, Emma and
her pills, Otis when he's
contrite, his poor suffering wife always, his mother-in-law after she had to
go
to the dentist, his cousin Goober, all them dogs, that dead bird and her
babies, Thelma Lou, Miss Ellie,
the shoe salesman (can't really say why, I just liked that guy), Nurse
Peggy, Nurse Mary, the moon-shinning sisters, Helen when she ain't being
mad, the butter & egg man, Howard etc., and forgive me if I left anybody
out). So, you can see, Miss Poovey, Gomer holds a big chunk of my heart.
And I won't let anyone hurt that boy.
So, you just love him a lot, give him sweet kisses, sing nice songs to him
with that beautiful voice of yours, (my favorite song is "The Man That Got
Away"), and we'll get along just fine. I'll even keep Lydia's greedy hands
off of him.
I love all men, but I stay away from them that belong to another, Laura
Lee Hobbs
"You know, Lydia, our only crime is that we're attractive to men."

Subject: Remake of TAGS

I'm kinda' late regarding a remake of TAGS but I'm just getting over the
shock of contemplating the prospect!! Heck, I was real disappointed in
Return to Mayberry cuz the buildings had changed so much. I'm real
old-fashioned and not too good with change so I expected the town to stay
the same even though it was 25 (or was it 30) years later. The aging of
the characters did not upset me at all; I just missed those who had
departed. I did think the writing and the plot were rather lame (sorry
to be negative) but it was certainly great fun seeing all those folks!
Like a lot of us since then, I've met so many of them in person that I
don't feel the need for another remake. As for others depicting our
beloved hometown family and friends, I just can't help but feel that it
can't be done; how can you improve on the best? So what's the point? I
don't get it.

TAGS fans,

I was in Borders books here in Denver the other day and saw something
you might be interested in (to look at even if you don't buy it). They had
a big set of "The Best of Gunsmoke on Radio" box with at least twenty
cassette tapes. On the front was a picture of the cast, with our own
Howard McNear as "Doc" and Parley Baer as "Chester." Floyd looks just the
same but Mayor Stoner was a world of difference. If you get a chance to
see it, you'll like the picture. Made me wish I could buy a copy of the
picture without paying $70 for the tapes.

Sam "Walk like Chester" White

P.S. Now that I think of it, it's too bad Goober never did his Chester
impersonation for the mayor.

Hey To All!
Hope everyone had a peaceful, restful Sunday! I have ponder this question
quite a bit lately with all the conversation over the rumored, proposed TAGS
remake. Well, actually I pondered this when they remade "Leave It To Beaver"
too. Can't claim to have seen that remake either so guess I added to its
viewing bellyflop.

I think this is a multifold problem on why Hollywood can't make the movies
and TV shows like they used to. First I think society in general is a
different demeanor and the flow changed as the times changed over the
generations. Each generation had their problems but it seems that instead of
simpler times and more congenial times, this generation has more "meanness"
and people shooting one another (something you would NEVER see in
Mayberry...shoot the only bullet you generally see happening is when ole'
Barn's gun gets shot usually in toward the ground or upward). I think the
peaceful, get along, polite and relaxing content of the shows we hold dear
probably doesn't ensure their sellability. Let's face it, the production
companies and television networks wants top box office sales and ratings. I
feel the more shoot em up, bang em up and conflict or the gag and laugh a
minute sitcom they can be presented with and purchased...the more they feel
they will reap in return money.

I wonder tho...the shows from the TAGS era when times were a little slower
and --in a way-- simpler, are those of us who grew up or lived those years
keeping these shows alive and adding to them by enhancing them to the new
generations in our family? I don't want to sound negative but I personally
don't see much on television nowadays that I care to invest my time in and
for those shows I think are worthy of my time are the ones which get yanked.
So guess that is why I would rather pop in my Videos or travel over to
TVLand. I like peaceful, quiet and simpler times...it soothes the nerves and
is like "Chicken Soup for the Soul" as those shows of past eras usually had a
good story content and morals.

Okie Dokie...best get back to Aunt Bee's pickle stock and off my sermon
pulpit!

Hey folks,

It's not official yet but if you'd like to sneak a peek at the design for the
WBMUTBB mouse pad, I've placed it on the front page of the TAGSRWC web site.
  http://mayberry.com/tagsrwc/

IF we get the pads made, that will be the way they'll look.

DON'T forget you can get the Mayberry mouse pads that are "official" (the
one's made by "HomeTown TV") by going to the American Classics web site.
  http://usaclassics.com/
and they heading to the Mayberry area. You'll see a link there for the "mouse
pads." There are 3 in all.

One final thing....To paraphrase Barney, "I believe I've heard enough about
that movie."
