>>>I didn't see the special on TAGS on TVLand. That's why I brought up the
problem about no African-Americans (or blacks as we were told to say in the
60's - it seemed better than "colored"). I've always loved Andy and his
friends, but always felt bad that there were only whites on it.<<<

James Carville made an excellent point in that documentary, for those of you
who didn't see it. He said if blacks were correctly portrayed in TAGS as
they were in the small-town south of the 1960s we wouldn't be watching the
show in reruns today. He's right. Aaron Ruben appeared to take full blame
for not enough blacks being in the show but I still don't think that's fair.
The CBS of the Jim Aubrey days was filled with escapist comedy--including a
lot of rural shows like TAGS and Petticoat Junction that gave everyone an
escape from the urban decay and riots we all saw on TV during that period.
It was just their way of sidestepping controversy. Keep in mind Hooterville
was all white too, along with Hilldale, Mayfield and numerous other small TV
towns of that era. So I think the real blame lies with the networks here. I
think had TAGS ever approached the ugly issue of racism, we would've seen
Opie make friends with a black child and Andy teaching the good white people
of Mayberry to follow that example. It would be in character for them. Even
Barney would've probably said "Well of all the unmitigated gall" to a "whites
only" sign at the diner...

Thanks to all who helped me track down the origin to the "It's not a whim if
you put on clean underwear" quote, now I have an even bigger favor to ask.
That is, if anyone's feeling especially neighborly. The episode in which
Opie falls for Helen, has a hilarious scene in which Barney is on the phone
with Juanita down at the diner, asking her to go with him to the drive-in at
Mount Pilot. Can anyone send me that conversation? I would more than
appreciate it. Thanks to you and yours...

Did you notice Johnny Coons was a member of the City Council that wanted to
throw Frank Myers off his land? But he was good about it, he was right out
there with the Mayor when the fixed Frank's house up.

Don wasn't in the TV version, only the broadway and film versions. He
played the Army psychiatrist.

On the stage, he was also the understudy for two other parts, including Will
Stockdale's (Andy's) father. The elder Stockdale was usually played by a
man named Flody Buckley. Don likes to tell the story of the time he woke up
sick as a dog and called the stage manager to say he couldn't work that day,
but the manager came back with "Well, you're a whole lot better off than Mr.
Buckley. He died last night." So far about a week, Don played BOTH parts.

If my memory serves me right, Mr Knotts played a corporal who had to
administer a
psychological test to Andy. He just had a short part in the movie!!!!BUMMER

This comment is completely off base. If this is any indication of where
this wonderful site is heading then I'll drop out today! There is nothing
anyone can do about how Hollywood handled ethinics in television shows of
the past. And there is no reason to dig for answers now. I'm insulted that
someone would even make a comment such as this one. Let's keep this site on
the lighter side of how wonderful the show is and not try to find the faults
that would keep it off television in today's sensitive world. If we wanted
to start a tirade of negatives there are plenty of catagories of which to
chose from. There was recently a comment of why there was no mention of
Vietnam in the show. That was in bad taste as well. You want reality? Don't
watch television!!! I could just as easily ask - Why are all the sitcoms of
today centered around sex and violence? Wouldn't that open a can of worms?
Please, remember Allan's rules for the Digest, which can be expanded to rule
number 3: it isn't really different than for life.....if you don't have
anything nice to say - don't say anything!

Harriet, now where are them dang chickens?

Don Knotts played a corporal, I believe. He gave Will Stockdale (Andy) a
test to take
apart 2 rings and put them back together. Will, being a strong country
boy, just bent them
apart.

Oh, Bob, you mean I really won! I've never won anything in my whole life,
and that's the truth! I got the Johnny Coons' question right mostly because
he said it in the shoe salesman/tv producer episode, and that's one of my
top 20 favorites, and I can recite every line in that particular show and I
knew SOMEONE told Barney "Good luck" before he went in to play for the
salesman.
And about the 30 weight oil I won for my prize--sure, darling, that's fine.
Any heavier, and I couldn't tote it.
Now because of my health problems, the State of
Alabama has decided, in all its Wisdom, that I must not be allowed to drive
(either my computer just malfunctioned, or there was a great sigh of relief
out there in computer land). So what I'm going to do will all this oil is to
offer it to the first gold truck that will stop for it. It's
harder than you may think to get a gold truck to stop for you and say hello.
But now in addition to my "Laura Lee Hobbs welcomes All Gold Trucks" sign, I
will have a "Laura Lee Hobbs will give away 30 gallons of oil
to the first Gold Truck that will stop and chat with her." That ought to
cause some brakes to slam.
I just hope every gold pickup on Hwy 123 don't read that sign, and think
I'm talking to them! And I especially hope said gold pickup don't have a
gun rack on its back, 'cause things might get a little messy. Reckon the
State in all its Wisdom will let me buy a gun? They could at least
give me a car to run him over.

Barney to fake FBI Agent: There's really three reasons why there's so
little crime in Mayberry: there's Andy, and there's me, and (patting his
pistol) Baby makes three."

contest winner

since everyone has been talking about these colored episodes, it has put me
to thought...with the exception of a couple of episodes, most of the colored
ones are sort of "dry". (i'm not trying to offend anyone who feels otherwise
about them). to me, the sense of humor sort of died down and it became more
serious than it used to be. i realize that the show was getting towards its
end, but the colored episodes are still very dull to me. does anyone else
feel this way about them?

Subject: Johnny Coons and other stuff

I still haven't heard from any 'trained noticers" as to when an episode
that has a clear shot of Mr Coons is coming up on TVLand. That way I
could tape it and put his hallowed image on my website.

Now on to other stuff... Sometimes I just put on a bucket and 'take a
thank' about Mayberry stuff. Has any one ever thought about Opie's ma? I
wonder who she was. She couldn't have been a childhood or highschool
sweetheart because there's been talk of them (i.e. Sharon DuSpaine)
Opie's ma must not have been a Mayberry native cause you'd think if her
family was in Mayberry, they'd come around every now and then to see
their grandchild or nephew or whatever. She probably didn't live in
Mayberry until after high school or Andy's stint in the service. Since
in those days folks mostly started their families as soon as they got
hitched, you gotta figure that Andy didn't meet her until he was into
his 30's and was already sheriff. I've got it figured that she must have
been an orphan who was passing through Mayberry and maybe decided to
stay when she saw what a friendly place it was and what a handsome young
sheriff ran the town! Andy was totally taken by her, too. He probably
urged her to take a job at the Snappy Lunch or the dime store (maybe she
roomed with Laura Lee Hobbs!) After a whirlwind romance they got married
at the church with Barney as the best man. And what caused her demise? I
think it must have been complications in childbirth. In my head, Mrs
Andy Taylor was a beautiful, petite, little bitty wisp of a woman; she
just didn't make it through a grueling home labor. This explains Opie's
bond with Rose; she was the only mother figure he had ever known. Has
any one else thought about this stuff or do I just have too much free
time on my hands?
