That was 35 to 40 years ago, for crying out loud. Why on earth would it or should it be brought up now? There were no Asians on Hogan's Heroes, there were no blacks on I Love Lucy, and there were no women in the movie "Sahara". My point is, So What? There is nothing that can change. So why even go on about it? I really can't believe that this was even brought up. If this is any indication of where this wonderful site is heading then I'll drop out today! There is nothing anyone can do about how Hollywood handled ethinics in television shows of the past. And there is no reason to dig for answers now. I'm insulted that someone would even make a comment such as this one. Let's keep this site on the lighter side of how wonderful the show is and not try to find the faults that would keep it off television in today's sensitive world. If we wanted to start a tirade of negatives there are plenty of catagories of which to chose from. There was recently a comment of why there was no mention of Vietnam in the show. That was in bad taste as well. You want reality? Don't watch television!!! I could just as easily ask - Why are all the sitcoms of today centered around sex and violence? Wouldn't that open a can of worms? Please, remember Allan's rules for the Digest, which can be expanded to rule number 3: it isn't really different than for life.....if you don't have anything nice to say - don't say anything! >> We are a group of people that share a common bond: our LOVE of "TAGS". I don't feel that the comment about there not being enough black folks on the show was out-of -line but I do agree that we shouldn't disect the show to the point that we begin to question the standards of the writers/directors/producers. We should remember that these were the most talented people that ever worked in television. Sure, in the year 2000 they would have done things a lot differently, but then who'd watch??? Not us!! The issue of different races being portrayed on TV was not an issue back then--their REAL LIFE trials were. Let's just enjoy the show for what it was and still is and will always be: pure entertainment. Look what happened to Amos and Andy, a great comedy, because of controversy. Lets just be thankful we have Mayberry, however its presented and not worry about politics while we're there. (AIT)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Poovey's and other questions Groovy Miss Poovey, Yes I have thought lots about Opie's Mother. In fact I wrote a whole script (aka Lost Episode about it) Allan was good enough to post it for me on our site. Please check it out if you haven't yet. We agree on some things, and I have different ideas on others, Miss P. http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/index.htm Select Fan Fiction..from there Select "the Greatest Story Never Told" I think you'll like it. Yes I'm am Johnny watchin' the schedule and trying to let you know when Mr. Koons in on. The Gold Truck Lady may have an idea too...she's a Johnny expert. to another writer...No I don't believe most of the color episodes are dry. I think the "good episodes" are fewer due to no Don Knotts but like others, enjoy some of them quite a bit. On another topic..."I hate it when we get obtuse" Let's keep it fun OK? There was a "white only" sign and I thought it meant you could only wash white clothes there. It wasn't 'til years later when I went "Ohhhhhh!" Don G. (who can be pretty nave at times).....yeah, of all the unmitigated gall! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 07:40:24 -0500 From: Allan Newsome <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Let's just enjoy Mayberry Hey Folks, I've been sitting here thinking and, while it's hard to type with this bucket on my head, I have to say a few things. First, I want to apologize to everybody for not being as "active" here on the WBMUTBB Digest as I use to be. I've been letting whole conversations go by without me saying a word about it. Now some of you might be GLAD not to have to hear from me because you've all heard so much from me in the past but I feel like we may be loosing a little bit of the "feeling of Mayberry" that we've had here for soooo long. Don't get me wrong, I don't think folks need to hear me talk to keep the Mayberry feeling alive here in our little corner but I do feel like I need to been seen more here in town....plus, I miss talking to y'all. So...I'm gonna try and be patrolling on the sidewalks of Mayberry a little bit more and I'll "jump in where I can and hang on." Second, all the talk about there not being this type of person or that type of person in Mayberry isn't something we ought to dwell on too much. I believe that what's been said already pretty well covers the subject and I think it's time for us to move along. Let's try and talk about things we like about Mayberry and try not to spend too much time sitting around with a bucket on our heads worrying about the things we wish were different. It's a pretty good town and the folks here are THE BEST in the world. Everybody and every town has shortcomings but I think the world would be a better, more enjoyable, place if we could all focus our thoughts on the good instead of the bad. This is our little corner of Mayberry here on the internet. Let's work hard at making our hometown the friendliest and most enjoyable place on the web. I'll do my part and I know you folks will as well. Lastly, Folks....please remember that if you want to post a message to the WBMUTBB Digest, all you need to do is send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Several folks here in town seem to be getting confused as to where to send their comments so I just wanted to remind everybody. Also, if you ever need to be removed or to change your email address...the directions are at the bottom of every issue of the WBMUTBB Digest. Well, that's all I have for right now. "Everything's O-kay, in Mayberry!" I remember Billy Bob Thornton, but not Carville. Of course, it could just be my brain blocking the memory out from the shock of associating the Clinton administration with Mayberry. Ugh. Don't we have enough of that crew here in the '90s and '00s? (By the way, what do we call these days? I can just hear my son saying, "C'mon Dad! Get with it! These are the ZEROS!" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 09:29:15 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V2 #162 In a message dated 5/30/00 9:55:44 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << Thanks to all who helped me track down the origin to the "It's not a whim if you put on clean underwear" quote, now I have an even bigger favor to ask. That is, if anyone's feeling especially neighborly. The episode in which Opie falls for Helen, has a hilarious scene in which Barney is on the phone with Juanita down at the diner, asking her to go with him to the drive-in at Mount Pilot. Can anyone send me that conversation? I would more than appreciate it. Thanks to you and yours... Dixon >> I too always loved when Barney would flirt with Juanita the operator. It would appear thar Mr Fife considered himself quite the ladies man!!!!!!!!! You know how women are about men in uniform. He was TOO funny.......BRanDon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 06:44:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Darryl Banks <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Mayberry and Civil Rights Howdy to you and yours! Dixon, PLEASE do not feel bad about the lack of African Americans on TAGS! Though Black Americans didn't get any "speaking" parts on TAGS until the color episodes (remember when Opie wanted to play football, but Andy wanted him to take Piano lessons, and the coach (an African American) came to the Taylor home and proceeded to play a lovely piece, winning Andy over to having Opie play...) the show always made a point of having African Americans in the crowd scenes, and since this was the DEEP south in the 60s, this is even more amazing! One of my fave episodes is the one where Barney gets the old WW1 cycle; Look closely when the guys in front of the jail sabotage the cycle before Barney tries to take Andy for a ride and you'll see a Black man fully participating with the white men in ribbing Barney. Try to find that anywhere else on TV in the 60s. You made some excellent points in your reply; The times were different then; I thank god for TAGS. Oh yeah, I happen to be a Black American (child of the 60s, but I won't make a melange about it!) Let's fix the Bandshell! Darryl __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? And kudos to Miss Poovey on her conjecture about Opie's mamma; I've thought about it and came up with a similar picture. Laura Lee, I'm sorry you're under "house arrest" but keep your chin up and dream of Mayberry! For the one who feels the color episodes are dull, you're entitled to your opinion and all but I love most of them. My all-time favorite is Only a Rose and that's a color episode; I've always felt the message in that one epitomized the Mayberry philosophy and it makes me cry every time.
