The sidecar episode just happens to be my very favorite and I do indeed remember the crowd scene. My point was not that I felt bad about not enough blacks in Mayberry; it's just that some people (non-fans, mostly) try to portray Mayberry as exclusionary and I do not believe it is. I don't think it would have been in anyone's character in Mayberry to be a bigot, except maybe Ben Weaver. Quite the contrary for the most part. I was just suggesting my argument that it was the network's fault, not the show's fault, in case any non-fans try to raise the issue with us. You know how women are about men in uniform. According to the Biography of Don Knotts - he was most assuredly a ladies man! Wonder if he had any fur lined handcuffs! No salt and pepper for me - I'll take the uniform! I'm new to the digest but I just wanted to throw in my two cents. Let's remember the show for what it was: Great writing and memorable characters. I thought it was so great what was said on the TVLand special. Andy wanted no jokes. The show was built around great writing for good characters. The same thing happened with Cheers in the 80's and Seinfeld in the 90's. The 60's were a time when TAGS was desperately needed to get away from reality for at least half an hour a week. Today, it is no different, we need to go to that little town and laugh for awhile. We can't stay in Mayberry but it's a great place to visit. Thanks for listening (reading), D. However, in at least two episodes ("A Date for Gomer" 12/9/63 & "The Mayberry Band" 11/19/62) he was FREDDIE Fleet and His Band with a Beat. In the former episode, he wasn't an actual character but was only referred to. In the latter, he appeared in the show. I don't remember him being called BOBBY Fleet. Was that later in the series? Here's another of my favorite quotes, said by Barney in "A Date for Gomer": "I'm not gonna stand in no stag line with old Mr. Perkins and a bunch of slumped over teenage boys!" _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freelane.excite.com/freeisp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 14:33:10 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Thanks! Hey there, everyone! I'm wanting to change the quote in my sig file, and want to use the one where Floyd is talking about the weather -- "It's 92. It's HOT!" I can't remember which episode it's from, or the exact wording. Can someone let me know which episode it's from (and maybe the wording)? Thanks! ANDY: No Floyd, Calvin Coolidge didn't say that. Mark Twain said that. FLOYD: Are you sure Mark Twain didn't get that from Calvin Coolidge? ANDY: No Floyd. Mark Twain lived before Calvin Coolidge. FLOYD: OH!...Well, he couldn't have gotten it from him then. Well what did Calvin Coolidge say? ANDY: I don't know, Floyd. FLOYD: I KNOW, he said, 'I choose not to run'. I knew he had to say something or he wouldn't have been President. I had to get THAT quote in here. :-) Allan "Floyd" Newsome ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 19:37:57 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V2 #162 If you remember the old "Amos n' Andy" show from the late 50's to early 60's, that was a great show. A lot of time and money went in to it to find actors to replace the already established characters from radio. It was good and it showed blacks as doctors, lawyers, businessmen, etc. BUT....you don't see it today because of the NAACP and other Civil Rights wackos. TAGS is an honest depiction of life in the south during that time. TAGS is a semi-honest portrayal of life in the south in the early 60's. I also don't understand why we single out blacks to be an ignored minority. Tell me when you saw a show with an American Indian on it. They were hardly on any westerns unless they were attacking the fort!! Where were the whites on Amos n'Andy? The token white on the Jeffersons was Willis and he was the butt of all the jokes. TAGS is a classic. No matter what, it is full of morals and good clean family entertainment. This entire should be dropped. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 20:18:22 -0400 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Pork chop sandwiches Guess what my hubby and I did this evening? We got industrious and tried making pork chop sandwiches according to Snappy Lunch's Charles Dowell's directions in the first Aunt Bee cookbook! They turned out not too bad; certainly not as good as the authentic item in Mt. Airy, but passable. We sure enjoyed the memory of the ones we've had up there, while eating them with TAGS on the TV; doesn't get any better than that for a Mayberrian! Didn't mean to start a controversy, just want Mayberry to be perfect. I never meant to judge Andy or Barney or the writers or anybody. I grew up in a town that could have been Mayberry - my uncle always reminded me of the barber, as a matter of fact. I never stopped watching Mayberry, no matter how often I was made fun of. So if I wanted to comment on something that I noticed (after I grew up) - well, everyone has a right to be critical of their home town. Remember how everybody was so afraid of the mysterious newcomer who knew everything about Mayberry? Barney was ready to run him out of town because he was "peculiar". But Andy asked a few questions and soon everybody was welcoming him. That's Mayberry - my home town. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2000 01:47:02 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: being obtuse Boy, did I open a can of worms! Didn't really mean to, it was late at night one night, and the subject popped into my head. But why am I apologizing? I've never stopped watching TAGS, and if you knew all the teasing I've taken for it over the years - well! Do you think everybody hates me now, or should I check into Aunt Bea's little Rock until they forgive me? Let's see, how long did Andy have to eat crow when he thought Opie was too selfish to give money to the poor kids? >: ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V2 #164 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
