My boyfriend, who is learning to love TAGS as much as I do, was wondering if I
knew what was the name of the county Mayberry was in, or if it was ever
mentioned on the show. I'm drawing a blank. Can anyone help? Thanks!!

That was Sheriff Poindexter (the case in question happened on August 9,
1946 - we don't know if he was still sheriff of Mayberry in 1947). Other
Mayberry Sheriffs who preceded Andy Taylor include Dale Buckley, Fred Paley,
and Sheriff Pinkley.

Mayberry, the city, is in Mayberry County. Mayberry is the county seat.

OK Taz, make up your mind!!

First you harp on us for pointing out inaccuracies on
TAGS (just watch and enjoy, you said...) and then in
the next missive you're pondering how E.T. Bass got
around!

I love your comments though! And anyone who's an
admirer of the Bass man is ALL RIGHT by me!

On another note.....
Jim Lindsey was played by James Best
George Lindsay played Goober (Goober a mad scientist?
that must be "classic" TV! YO!)

Keep my breakfast hot and the coffee simmering!

I agree. Otis was a kind man and knew his limitations. He did
see temptation coming, but more often than not, temptation saw
him first. He did not hesitate to remind us that "Us town drunks
has a code we live by."

That said, it makes me feel strange every time I hear Andy
ranting to Aunt Bee about one of the things that made him upset
at the beginning of episode #161-( Opie's Job )was that Otis had
gotten gassed, drove his car through the Harper's rose garden,
and then wanted to fight. All of that just wasn't in character
for Otis (think of the Hot Rod Otis episode) and it was passed
over in this otherwise fine episode with nary a mention, as if
Andy was now resigned to the fact that Otis was getting a
snootful and sliding behind the wheel.

Oh, I know, it's just a television show, but television (at least
the AGS) is mighty important to me, and I ain't no New York
producer either.

Howdy to you and yours again!
On unseen/unheard characters:
Norm Peterson's wife Vera on CHEERS (she did make one
appearance on the episode the "Thanksgiving Dinner",
but her face was artfully hidden by a thrown pie!)
and Phyllis Diller's hubby FANG!

Just thought you might like to read what I found out about the origin =
of
"putting on airs."
Putting on airs may come from a term used in dressage (horse show
competition) to indicate a movement in which the horse's legs are off =
the
ground. The various "airs" above ground are performed chiefly by horses
trained in the hautes =E9coles (high schools), like the Spanish Riding =
School
of Vienna. To put on airs, then, would be to show off a talent that is
shared only with the most elite.
You ain't talkin' to a jerk ya know.

Oh we do watch, and we do enjoy, but like Kenneth, there's Paul
Mulik, me, the Milo Boys and whole heap of the others who like
to stretch our trained noticer talents every once in a while and
speculate on some of these things when we're feeling special
sporty. Don't mind us - there's only 249 episodes and there's
365 days in a year - what's a body to do but use our extra
sensitive perception to kind of fill in the gaps.

Here's a good bit of Andy Griffith trivia: name the one song that both
Andy Griffith and Don Henley (of Eagles fame) have recorded on an album.

Fellow WBMUTBB members:
I work for a publishing company which counts among it's titles Linn's Stamp
News, the leading philatelic authority. I talked with the managing editor
about the idea of a TAGS stamp and he provided me a copy of the May 29 issue
explaining the duties of the Citizens Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee
and the guidelines for stamp themes and designs. As a rule, for an image of
an individual to appear on a U.S. stamp, the individual must be deceased for
a period of at least 10 years. But the rules doesn't preclude a stamp, say,
showing downtown Mayberry, or the courthouse, or other such symbol. In the
1990s, a stamp was issued honoring Jerry Seinfeld and his show, but the
stamp shows his apartment, not an image of the living actor. And a stamp
commemorating John Glenn's return to space doesn't show an image of the
former astronaut/senator, but a rendition of the space shuttle on which he
traveled. I guess Aunt Bee's image could qualify for depiction, or any of
the other characters that passed on at least 10 years ago, but not Andy,
Opie, Barney, Thelma Lou. If anybody wants to spearhead such a campaign and
needs the guidelines, I'd be glad to send them a copy.

I believe the sheriff before Andy was Poindexter? As for puttin' on airs
I remember reading somewhere it originated in Europe where the upper
class, who had bathing facilities, appeared to be keeping their noses in
the air trying not to pick up the odors of the lower class, the great
unwashed masses we've heard about. As to Andy's health, I would hope
that Jim would know and inform us if anything was wrong. However, a
friend of mine who reads those tabloid papers called me and said an
article in a current issue says he's hanging on by a thread. Let's all
say a quick, heartfelt prayer that it ain't so!!!

Hey To All,
I don't want to cause a ruckus but I think we have seen Carlton the door man
once. I think he appeared in the show at the end of the run of "Rhoda". If
I am not mistaken, he was in a red doorman's attire with gold brocade. It
was but just a glance of him but I believe they purposely let him be seen for
a moment. Heck, we probably did see more of Mr. Wilson in "Home Improvement"
in his at a glance.

In Mayberry, I can think of two other ladies we didn't get to see but we saw
them call the sheriff's office. Sorry, I have a lapse of memory and can't
remember the fine ladies' names (see what turning 39.95 does to a person?).
One was the lady in "The Loaded Goat" episode who kept calling the sherriff's
office everytime there was an explosion wanting to know if Richmond was being
overtaken. The second one, seems to me there was a lady who kept getting her
cat stuck in a tree and Barn would go get it down then come back in the
courthouse.

Well back to the pickle stock,
Sandi

I read about it in the GLOBE last week. If you want details, email me. Of
course you know the GLOBE is not exactly the most reliable source of
