You're mixing up two different episodes. Both stories have Barney stopping
several people at a roadblock, hence the confusion.

Mrs. Fife, played by Lillian Culver, appears in episode 2, "The Manhunt."
Checkpoint Chickie comes 3 years later, in "Barney's Sidecar."

I've been compiling a list of Mayberry's unseen characters when time
allows, and I have nearly 200 names. If anyone is interested in
obtaining a copy, let me know and I'll send it via e-mail. Any additions
to the list are accepted-this IS a community project!

Okay, I know this is stretching it a bit, but we never saw Charlie Brown's
teacher (nor understoo a word she said). Also, we only saw the legs and
feet of the Muppet Babies' Nana. (Can you tell I have a toddler?)

Karen Leonard was on the ball! She knew the answer to my Betty Lynn trivia
question was "June Bride," a 1948 movie starring Bette Davis and Robert
Montgomery, along with a very young Betty Lynn. Though it's not one of
Bette Davis's better known films, it's a very enjoyable comedy with a lot of
witty banter.

I haven't yet had a response on my "No Time for Sergeants" question (not
trivia, I just want to know about the connection between it and "Gomer Pyle
USMC"). One thing I forgot to mention is that Andy's character Will
Stockdale says "Gollleee!" just like Gomer later does on TAGS and GPUSMC.

So there we were, semi-conscious and heading for some adventure sleeping
after the 10 p.m. TAGS episode on TVLand, when our attention was drawn
to Leave It to Beaver. Who should appear but Floyd, our beloved Mayberry
barber/philosopher, cutting hair in pre-TAGS Beaver-ville. Actually gave
young Wally a haircut and his first barbershop shave. We're used to
Mayberry sightings but this was a tad creepy.

Hey Folks,

On this "Unseen Character" stuff. It's fun and all but lets get back to
Mayberry and off all these other shows. I enjoyed it but I think we've
covered other shows well enough.

Thanks!

In talking about unseen characters, someone mentioned Clarence in Happy
Days. He as played by an actor named Gary Friken, who happens to be a
"little person" of 4' and a few inches tall.

I really like Miss Poovey's theory about Floyd being in the witness
protection program! Miss Poovey, you wear that bucket well!

There have been a couple of comments recently about Floyd changing or being
played by two different men, but no one has addressed this. Wasn't Floyd
always played by Howard McNear? And wasn't the change the result of his
suffering a stroke sometime fairly early in the show's run? That's why
later we never see Floyd standing or walking; he's seated in the barber
chair or sitting down somewhere else. I think this was talked about in one
of the reunion shows a few years back. Am I right?

In the heard-but-not-seen discussion, somebody mentioned Dick Van Dyke.
This then leads me to Richard Diamond where Mary Tyler Moore was "seen" as
David Janssen's secretary, but all you ever saw were her legs.

Watched a movie with Betty Lynn last night: Apartment for Peggy. She played
a 'mother figure' and used her middle name in the cast listing - Betty Ann
Lynn. Not a great movie and she only had a few minutes and just a couple of
lines but it was her and boy was she feisty!

I THINK THAT THE RATING CHANGE ON GOMER PYLE, ALL IN THE FAMILY ETC HAS
SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE SLIGHTLY ABUSIVE LANGUAGE CARTER USES WITH PYLE
(I.E KNUCKLEHEAD) WHICH IS SOMEWHAT DEROGATORY ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT
SOME IDEAS EXPRESSED PARTICULARLY WITH ALL IN THE FAMILY ARE POLITICALLY
INCORRECT AND ARE IMMORAL AS WELL. OBVIOUSLY A 9 OR 10 YEAR OLD CHILD

I have been reading the digest for some time now but this is my first
posting. Hope I did it right this time. Anyway, some of the unseen
characters mentioned on MASH have been seen. We saw B.J.'s wife,Peg and
daughter, Erin in home movies along with Frank's wife (at their wedding),
Col. Blake's wife, Lorraine (aka Mildred), and Radar's mom, uncle and dog,
Ranger. We didn't see Col. Potter's wife (also named Mildred) but he always
had a picture of her on his desk. We didn't see Klinger's wife (I think her
name was Laverne) but they got married via a short wave radio(?) and he wore
a wedding gown. Well, I could ramble on and on about MASH or TAGS but will
go for now. Looking forward to the Military Rendezvous. MASH and Mayberry
all in one place. I'll think I died and went to heaven. They're both my
favs!! Thanks for reading my ramblings and lotsa luck to you and yers.

Subject: Cyber-Barney

By now, most of you have probably seen that funny commercial TVLand has been
running for the imaginary video game, "Cyber Barney" (they show it during
nearly every TAGS episode that they air). The commercial gives the first
four levels of the game as:

1: typing reports
2: sweeping the courthouse
3: taking a nap
4: walking Thelma Lou to church

Just for fun, I've been trying to guess what some of the other levels are.
Perhaps they might include:

5: changing pillowcases in the cells
6: taking in Mrs. Kelsey's laundry
7: chalking tires
8: watching bicycles in front of the movie house
9: stopping trucks at Checkpoint Chickie
10: getting Ms. Kruteck's cat down out of the tree
11: shaking doorknobs on Main Street stores
12: gun-drawing practice (ten minutes every day)
13: putting lids back on trash cans
14: eating cashew fudge while watching that doctor show on TV with Thelma
Lou

Anybody care to add to this list?

Ah...did the Ohio TAGS clubs know about the "Squad Car/Military Rendezvous"?
That's the event you all need to be planing to make BIG there in Ohio. Right
now, I'd say that the MASH fans will be the largest turn out by far. We need
to get folks ready to be there and have fun.

SO, Ohio and nearby folks....make plans to be there!!!
