FYI Mayberry fans -- I only get to skim over the digest these days so I
hope I'm not repeating what you already know. On August 7th, for one show
only, there will be a 40th anniversary of TAGS celebration at the Country
Tonight Theater in the Pigeon Forge area of Tennessee. (I'm not sure of
the exact location of this particular theater). For tickets call: (865)
453-2003. The host will be David Browning with guests Maggie Peterson
Mancuso, Betty Lynn, The Original Dillards, and James Best. So, if you live
in the area or will be vacationing here, then you might want to check this
out.

Everybody's been getting their packages from Allan - I just got
mine today.

I'll come in with a big "what he said" for my part too. My shirt
arrived today along with the mousepads I ordered. The shirt is
very high quality and not too porous (you wouldn't want your
chest hairs to poke through) and the three rodent thangs are
nice, real nice.

then tin cans, then rubbish. First thing you know Mayberry's up to
here in litter! Now litter brings slums and slums bring crime. Is that
what you want to see started here in Mayberry, a crime wave? Well I
don't and I aim to NIP IT IN THE BUD!"

<< I remember as a little girl going up to their wonderful house and my
Grandmother would always use the word "ought" instead of zero. As I was
trying to learn "New Math", the term always used to throw me off my line of
thinking as I would remember she was talking about zero. >>

I think the actual term is "aught", as in the time on the Beverly Hillbillies
that Jethro wanted to be a double-aught spy...

Speaking of touching episodes, you guys are in for a treat when you catch the
final-season episode in which Aunt Bee learns to fly and gets a pilot
license. Critics often give the show a lot of flak about Aunt Bee having
such a provincial role in the Taylor house, and the sight of an excited and
empowered Aunt Bee, with such a fascinating accomplishment under her belt,
will get you in the gut every time.

it make?...Well, you know what I mean...tell me you know what I mean...yea,
course you do. Well, we were out there once before...">>

What a funny bit! I forgot all about the "Hi, Frank!" part, that is a

I nearly starve to death every time they have an eating scene. Makes me want
to start cooking roast beef and run to the store for pearly onions. According
to the producers they had a kitchen on the set and all the food for the
scenes was
prepared there. After filming the cast and crew would clean up what was left
so it must have been good. I believe I'll let the vienna sausage and tomato
puree go on by though.

Hey Gang,

I just wanted to write and put my 2 cents in about our Mayberry at MeadowView
shows. First of all I want to thank all of you "boardsters" out there who
come in from all over the country to attend this event. It has been our
pleasure to have met so many wonderful people and to have you visit East
Tennessee and MeadowView. It has been a thrill of a lifetime for me to meet
many of the citizens of Mayberry. They all are all super people and that is
just it, they ARE people, just like you and me. They just happened to pass
through a small town in North Carolina once upon a time.

MeadowView is a business and a business has to make money. Our Mayberry shows
are very costly to produce. Our General Manager has been very obliging to
Tammy and myself in allowing us to attempt to put together an event that we
are proud of. It is top notch, family oriented entertainment, something that
I feel is very much missing in today's society. I don't want to sound like
I'm patting myself on the back, but I am VERY proud of the first 2 shows and
I know number 3 will be great as well. We could not do these shows alone, so
congratulations go to everyone at MeadowView, the vendors, the performers and
the sponsors who make these events what they are. But as great and wonderful
as I know they are, we still have to show a profit.

Quite frankly, ticket sales are not what we had hoped. They are not bad, just
not nearly the numbers we were looking for. The majority of the tickets we
sell to this event come from fans like yourselves who travel great distances
to come to MeadowView and East Tennessee. So again, thank you for that.

The following comments are strictly my opinion, so don't attribute them to
anyone else. Convention Centers on average do not make money. When Kingsport
decided to build a Convention Center, they were advised of this fact and were
told by the experts to make it work they would also need a hotel to offset
the losses normally associated with a Convention Center. Kingsport decided
they did not have the money to build a hotel so they went looking for a
partner.

They found that partner in The Eastman Chemicals Corporation who put up the
money for the hotel. Taxes were raised on the citizens of Kingsport for the
Convention Center and the MeadowView complex was built. So now we have 2
owners, Kingsport and Eastman Chemicals.

Our average yearly occupancy in the hotel runs about 72%, which is fantastic.
So Eastman is ecstatic. The Convention Center, as projected and expected,
does not make a lot of money. So the city of Kingsport and it's citizens are
not extremely pleased with MeadowView. If we had 1 owner, everything would be
great. But because of the 2 owners and the fact the city is losing money,
local people simply will not come out and support MeadowView. Not just the
Mayberry events, all the events. Local support is just not there.

Sometimes when I am out in public, people who see the "MeadowView" emblem on
my shirt verbally abuse me for working at MeadowView. 90% of them, when they
are asked, have never been to MeadowView and say they will never go there
because it is a "money pit", "They raised my taxes to build that place", etc.
Those of you who know me, know me as a "big" boy and I can take it. I am just
trying to convey what the majority of the local feelings toward MeadowView
are.

I tell them as citizens of Kingsport they are part owners and they owe it to
themselves to at least visit the place before they make a decision.
MeadowView is a beautiful facility. We have a top of the line Management team
and the BEST associates in the world working here and that is the reason we
have been the Number One Marriott Conference Center in the United States for
the past 2 years. I could not imagine a better place to work.

Well, that 2 cents turned into about a dollar and a quarter. But to make a
long story a little longer, without local support and if the ticket sales
aren't there, we aren't making any money. And if we aren't making any money,
we can't do it anymore. It breaks my heart to say good-bye to the "Mayberry
at MeadowView" shows.

We still have a week to go, so maybe the good folks in Kingsport and the
surrounding area will have a change of heart and come out and see what we are
all about.

To those of you traveling to MeadowView for the show this week, have a safe
journey and we're looking forward to seeing you. It's gonna be BIG!!!

My best Mayberry wishes,

Gary

Jim Nabors will be performing on the Grand Ole Opry on June 24. For folks who
can't make it to Kingsport to see Miss Bunny, Lou Ann Poovie and Duke Slater,
and others, they can catch Gomer at the Opry instead. (If you can't make it
to the Opry, he'll be on the televised portion on TNN. Folks at the Kingsport
show can probably catch the re-broadcast on their hotel TV's)
