Don't forget Howard's bashes when his mother got married and he took over
the bachelor pad. I realize the first one ended rather early, but the next
one he started later so it would not end so early. Also I do believe the
annual "Harvest Ball" was a rather late event for the people of Mayberrry.
Of course the reason everything probably ended so early is the fact that it
got so dark early in Mayberry. Have you ever noticed that when Andy comes
home most nights for supper it is already dark, even in the summer, and the
Taylor's eat around sixish.? "Must be the bomb!"

Hello Folks,

I just watched the old movie, "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" for the
first time. Ronny Howard plays Eddie and steals the whole show! What a great
little actor! It was fun to watch him! I hadn't seen him in anything but
TAGS, as a very young boy. I understand he was in some other movies when he
was even younger. I'll be looking out for those now.

To Sandi who was asking in the last digest (#220) about seeing all the
mention of "TAGS" and "DVD," I think you are confused by two different
things. The last few digests mentioned actors who were both in The Andy
Griffith Show (TAGS) and The Dick Van Dyke Show, hence the "DVD"
abbreviation. Additionally, there ARE several episodes of TAGS in the DVD
format, made by different studios/labels. I was dissappointed in the box set
by Madacy; the picture quality was decent but nothing special. Also, there
is a lot of overlap, as certain episodes keep showing up on each of them.

Subject: Sunday Service and Dinner Time

Someone recently posted the question about Sunday church service start times
and Sunday dinner. Even though the marque said 11 AM Service, usually in
the summer (in the South) Sunday service started at 10:30 or earlier. Most
moms would have a roast or hen in the oven (you could actually go to church
and leave something cooking in the oven and not worry about the house
burning down) so you could have dinner as soon as you got home. Then it was
lounging around on the porch or nap time or even churning out some homemade
ice cream. As far as the story about the band - when they started out
putting the band together remember they didn't know the uniforms were
falling apart and the band stand was deteriated. And also, summer evenings
didn't get dark til around 9.

In What's Your Hurry the best epilogue of all shows was listening to Andy
sing and play the guitar and then panning over to Mr. Tucker and the apple
completely peeled dangling in his hand as he napped brings a tear to this
un's eye!

Harriet, who misses Southern style Sunday afternoons.....

Subject: What's Your Hurry?

I've always thought that the "What's You Hurry?" episode contained one of
the biggest to-dos over nothing in it. It happens when Andy tells Aunt Bee
that they plan to "run down to the drugstore and get some ice cream." Aunt
Bee suddenly launches into a fit about "Why do you have to run? Why is
everyone aleways running?"

If I had been Andy, I would have said, "For Pete's sake, Aunt Bee, it's just
a figure of speech! Truth be told, we're probably going to walk over there."

Of course then, the episode would have ended because they never would have
felt guilty and tried to put together a band concert.

I guess that's why I'm not Andy.

Nutsy "Looks awful spidery to me!"

If I remember correctly; Aunt Bee had her hair down
during the fued episode between the Carter's and the
Wakefield's, when the kids came to Andy's house in the
middle of the night to get married.

Hellooooo Dollllll,
In addition to being a Fun Girl, I have been honin' my trained noticer
skills.

Did any one else catch the episode when Opie gets his math grade changed to
an F after bringing home straight A's and Barney is trying to recite the
preamble to the constitution ? He gets so frustrated that he ends up
messing up his hair, and it is hanging in his face on the close up shots.
On the long shots, Barney's hair is combed back neat on the sides. They
switch back and forth between close up and longshots several times
consecutively. I guess they must have done a couple different takes of that
scene, once close up, and once long shot, and just edited them together.

In the first episode "The New Housekeeper", Rose is played by Mary Treen,
and she also plays Clara Grigsby in the episode about the travelling shoe
salesman/gossiping episode.
Mary was also a regular on the Joey Bishop Show, playing Hilda Hinklemeyer,
Joey's wise cracking maid/nanny. She and Joey played off each other so
well.

Yesterday while I was out roamin' around these parts out in the middle of
nowhere in Indiana County, PA,(in the vicinity of Jimmy Stewart's home
town/birthplace) I drove past a Personal Care Home and it was called The
Keeper of the Flame, sure as the sign on the lawn said it was . I howled.
Seems Mayberry lives on even when and where you least expect it.

Also, a question: Was Cheerio Meredith (Mrs Brand) in Arsenic and Old Lace
with Cary Grant or does she just bear a resemblance to the ladies who were
in that picture?

Fun Girl

It's been a long time since I saw the original of this episode but I
think they probably cut some pretty crucial scenes from it. Like the
reason WHY Barney ended up going on their honeymoon with them. Seems
like there was some kind of mix-up or something that happened causing
Barney to end up with them.

I was also wondering...Andy and Helen went on their honeymoon, Aunt
Bee went to live with Sam and Mike - Where did Opie go?

All episodes have epilogues. Paul
Well, now Do They? The reason I ask is what about the band concert episode?
You know how they are sitting around the porch, Gomer says they are pooped
to the visiting Pastor, Andy asks, "What's your hurry?"

>>>

That IS the epilogue to that episode. This one, and a few others, were
never cut out for syndication, because the storyline just didn't work
without it. In this episode (Sermon for Today) the OPENING scene was
normally cut out -- Andy and Opie sitting on the front porch reading "Little
Orphan Annie" from the Sunday paper (this was a great scene, but in the mind
of some TV executive, it was not important).

Another epilogue which was normally included on TBS and WGN is the one from
"Back to Nature" (the one where the group of boys go camping with Andy,
Barney and Gomer). The entire opening scene was cut out of this one, too.
Andy, Barney, and Floyd are sitting on a bench on Main Street. Barney is
complaining about Gomer's new-fangled gas pump, which alledgedly scratched
the squad car. Floyd complains about modern electric lather makers,
claiming that it's better to make it yourself with a mug and a brush (klup,
klup, klup -- isn't that a nice sound?) Then Opie walks by with a
transistor radio held up to his ear. Andy calls out to him, but Opie is so
engrossed in the baseball game he's listening to that he doesn't even
notice. The entire scene is meant to make modern inventions look
undesirable, hence the need to get "back to nature."
