For some reason I forgot to type in his nick name when I quoted from the article. He is a talented musician & a good judge of what constititutes good music. I didn't know that he was the one who did the Wonder Years, so appreciated learning that. Aunt Bee 2 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 20:59:57 -0500 From: "T.M. Bull" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: My Fair Ernest T. Bass Now you've hit on one of my favourite episodes. My favourite two TAGS phrases are, "How do you do, Mrs. Wiley?" and "I just can't face the future knowing there's eight more jars of Aunt Bee's pickles in it." But how about, "I've been coming in rooms nice and quiet"? And when Barney demonstrates his entrance abilities and silently says hello? Kills me every time!I sure love that Ernest T. He calls her Rowena and she calls him Oliver. Long live Ernest! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 20:13:48 +0200 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Kenneth G. Anderson) Subject: Barney in a Novel I am simply amazed, as I have said before, at how many times Barney's name appears in novels that I read. It has happened again. An FBI agent has messed up a very high profiled case and her supervisor is chewing her out with the following quote: "You realize, don't you , Irene, that we are the FBI? The most advanced investigative organization in the world. And these Donovans and their relatives are making you look like a complete idiot. A laughingstock for the entire world. I have seen Barney Fife turn out better police work than you." Poor Barney, even after almost 40 years, people still can't forget antics. Anderson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Andy in "Opie's Group" The other day, I watched my video of the episode "Opie's Group" in which Opie joins a local rock band and gets in trouble because he fails to keep music "in the proper perspective." I particularly noticed Andy's role in this episode (which is from the last season of the show), perhaps because there were some postings recently regarding Andy being more serious in the color episodes. To me, Andy seems rather out of character in this episode, and he comes across -- well -- almost as though he felt uncomfortable with the part written for him. In the first scenes, he is pleasant but bland. As the plot unfolds, Andy becomes irritable. Towards the end, he is angry and uncommunicative. When he orders Aunt Bee into the car as though she were a disobedient child and when he harshly snaps at Opie in the kitchen, he seems to go too far. Even at the end, as he experiences a change of heart about Clara's involvement and apologizes to her, Andy doesn't seem himself, somehow doesn't come across as genuine. I know Andy was more serious in the later episodes, but in this one he was downright humorless! He just doesn't seem like the Andy we all know and love. Does Andy's role in this episode strike anyone else as being out of place? (Now, please note that my intent is not to be critical, but only to point out the inconsistency of this particular role with the rest of the series.) I'd be interested to hear what the rest of you think! Janet ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! I mentioned that my old stompin' grounds of Clay City, Indiana, had just adopted the motto "Mayberry of the Midwest" to describe the friendly little town. They put it on several fancy new signs erected at each main entrance. Well, since then the town has really gotten on the bandwagon with this new motto. They bought an early-60's Ford and had it restored into a Mayberry-style squad car (not an exact replica because it says "Clay City, Indiana" on it -- they may do an actual replica later). We went over last week for the annual 4-H fair parade, and the car was in it. They've also opened a visitor's center where various "Mayberry of the Midwest" items are offered for sale. I just bought one of the T-shirts, which has a large design of the sign (front of the sign on front and back of the sign on back) bearing the motto "Mayberry of the Midwest" (it looks real sharp and only $11). They're hoping to stage special events with TAGS cast members, and they're even contemplating creating replicas of the inside of the sheriff's office and the exterior of Wally's Service Station! Exciting stuff!! And all in a little town of just under 1,000 people. The town has their own web site at www.claycity.net. Check it out and be sure to click on the "History" button -- you'll find information about the "Mayberry of the Midwest" motto and their plans for building on it. I spoke recently with one of the members of the committee heading up the town's promotion. He said a "dot com" web site is in the works. I'm assuming they'll make available there all the "Mayberry of the Midwest" items that are currently for sale at the visitors center (that's my guess - -- don't hold me to it). I'll post information on the Digest when I find out. In the meantime, check out the current web site and stayed tuned for further developments. For those who were disappointed in the scaling down of the Squad Car Rendezvous in Ohio -- who knows?? -- Clay City could be the next big gathering place for TAGS fans! Which episode was it on? That would be from the first episode that the Darlings came to town. The= y were sitting in the jail cell eating some of Aunt Bee's white beans--Bris= coe had 4 bowls--and Aunt Bee was collecting the bowls and asked if they'd ha= d enough to eat and one of the boys said " 'Bout to pop." They had their b= acks to the camera, so I'm not sure which one had the "big" speaking part. Op was so swave and de-boner while she was sitting on the sofa, totally rejected by that young playboy, Fred Simpson! I'll bet Opie learned that from ole Barn! You know, "I feel sorry for you baby! You had the chance to fly with me and you blew it!!!" I also loved the terminology Andy used..."You goin' to the dance stag or drag?" I guess some feminist types might be disparaged by that phrase but I think it's the cat's! ~the groovy misspoovey who loves being dragged to a dance~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 10:25:00 -0500 (CDT) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: short sleeves I saw the episode this a.m. where Howard bowled the 300 game. Their bowling shirts had short sleeves and I started thinking about how few times Andy was ever seen wearing a short sleeved shirt. The only other time I could think of was when Aunt Bee bought Andy and Opie the matching outfits for their Hollywood trip. Even when he was in street clothes it seems like he was always wearing long sleeves. I was wondering if it was just a personal preference of his or were short sleeves considered too casual back then? - -Charlie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 17:27:36 -0400 From: Keith Grubb <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V2 #232 >>>I've not heard this addressed, but I've been thinking lately about Opie's name. I have never heard of another person or character with the name Opie. Does anyone know the origin of this name? >>> I remember seeing reference once to a real person named Opie in a "Lum&Abner" journal, and it was thought (or maybe known) that this person was the inspiration for Opie's name. There are quite a few common links between the old L&A radio program and TAGS. For instance Howard McNear (Floyd) was sometimes heard on L&A. And Tuffy Goff (Abner) was the grocer when Opie was competing for a delivery job. And he brilliantly played Gomer Pyle's grandpa on that show. ("Are you 6 foot? You look 6 foot!") Anyone who enjoys TAGS will almost certainly enjoy the similar character comedy style of Lum and Abner. ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V2 #233 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
