We got to see Johnny turn to Andy and delivery those immortal words: How'd he do it, Sheriff? A second treat was to get to see Johnny's screen credit. There it was: Johnny Coons - Man #2. It is such a joy to get to see a man of this talent at the zenith of his career. dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 07:57:34 -0400 From: "Dan Goodwin/Jobscope" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Good Writing Watching Goober Takes a Car Apart last night, I started noticing what a great job the writers did with the character development within the story and how well everybody played off everyone else. First, there was Goober talking a mile-a-minute sincerely wanting to help both Gilley Walker and Andy but unable to handle the priorities. Then there was Gilley, always mad-as-heck with enough pressure that Goober can't ignore him. Andy just got madder and more frustrated with his inability to get the situation taken care of. And then right in the middle of this maelstrom was a true counterpoint in the storm - Floyd. All heck was breaking loose all around him, lots of noise and shouting, tempers flaring and here sits Floyd with a cool-as-a-cucumber delivery as if he was completely oblivious to all that was going on around him: Fascinating, I've never seen a motor run all by itself like that. And then later: I might just buy this car, Goober things I might get it cheap, what do you think? I didn't catch who wrote the episode, but good job fellows. dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 08:02:26 -0400 From: "Dan Goodwin/Jobscope" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Mayberry Names Since we've been talking about Mayberry names for animals, here is another application. Those of you in the computer business know that within a network all the servers are distinctive and are given individual names. My son ran a large network and used all Mayberry names for his servers. As his network grew, he exhaused his knowledge of the Mayberry characters and had to come to old Dad. I doubt that the people on his network will ever get over having a server named MrSchwump. dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 08:48:12 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Betty Lynn <<According to the Internet Movie Database, Betty Lynn did, indeed, appear in "Cheaper By the Dozen"! She played the part of Libby Lancaster. I don't know what's going on with her saying she didn't, and them listing it in the IMdB. Must be one of those "76 documented cases of malfeasance!" >> She sure did!! I seen her with my own two eyes. It's one of my favorite movies. Betty was just pulling somebody's leg. It was the one with Henry Bennet - the Jinx. When it got to the part where Henry reached in the hat for the drawing and pulled out the hat size, he rolled the floor laughing. This is pretty good for a 14 year old who concentrates on showing no emotion of any kind. They picked that name because the actor looked like the real Frank Myers, production manager. By the way, the real Frank Myers was my dad's first cousin. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 10:55:59 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Barney names And who could forget"Barney sucker",or "Eagle-Eye Barney,Fast gun fife,Maddog Barney, and last but not least Jerk J-E-R-K Jerk".And also he(Barney)doesn't like to falsify, and remember he wouldn't mail his letter because he wouldn't buy a stamp through that machine at the postoffice, because he didn't think it was right for the United States postal service to be doing business thriugh a slot machine. From Mayberry fan in Louisville David<danielsdandav46>Daniels ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 10:14:16 -0500 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: guest star >>>From: Paul Jennings <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ...Who's the fella that plays the sergant when Earnest T tries to get into the Army? He also played a worker at Crowley's market....and a farmer selling bootleg produce behind main street. I can't think of his real name. He may have been in more episodes. >>> That's good old Allan Melvin, TAGS' most recognizable guest star. He played eight different roles in eight different episodes, as follows: "Doc" Clarence Malloy in "Jailbreak" Detective Bardolli in "Andy and Barney in the Big City" Neal the farmer in "Lawman Barney" Jake in "Barney's First Car" Recruiting sergeant in "Ernest T. Bass Joins the Army" Unnamed escapee in "Andy's Vacation" Fred Plummer (no relation to Liquid Plumr) in "Barney's Uniform" Clyde Plaunt in "Howard's Main Event" Outside of Mayberry, he was also known as Cpl. Henshaw on The Phil Silvers Show, Sam the Butcher on The Brady Bunch, Sgt. Hacker on Gomer Pyle - USMC, Barney Heffner on All in the Famliy / Archie Bunker's Place, and for numerous Liquid Plumr commercials and HB cartoon characters. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 10:24:53 -0500 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Aunt Bee's Big Moment >>>From: "DEBORAH DUBOSE" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have this awful sinking feeling that I have missed (again) Aunt Bee learning to fly. >>> If TV Land sticks to their regular schedule, it should be on next Tuesday. Just Wonderin, Spyda Byte >>> The character of Frank Myers was indeed named after Production Manager Frank Myers, as sort of an inside joke. Once filming on the episode was complete, the real Frank Myers kept the prop mailbox with "his" name on it as a souvenir. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 12:23:11 -0500 From: Rodney Blackwell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: PET NAMES Our cocker spaniel is named Barney! But I always noticed something about his pickle. Of course now, it's in B/W, but I always thought the part of the pickle closest to Opie's mouth and nose was much darker than the rest of the pickle, leading me to wonder if perhaps they maybe coated that part of it to make it more palatable for Opie to bite down on. Maybe they used chocolate or something like that to cover up the smell and make it a little tastier for a child to bite into. Not that it seemed to have worked all that well. This may be a dumb theory as I don't can 'em, I don't judge 'em, I just eat 'em. Laura Lee Hobbs, dime store clerk and gold truck watcher extraordinare ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 14:19:27 CDT From: "DEBORAH DUBOSE" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Floyd: "The Gay Deceiver" "I'm headin' for Nashville!" Know who said that? Course you know who said that. (If you're at this site and you DON'T know who said that, YOU'D better head for Nashville before we find you and make you get down there with them spiders!) Our dear Floyd said it in "Floyd, The Gay Deceiver" episode, and wasn't he a dandy in that one? Who knew this side to Floyd existed? But like he said, "You can't spend 20 years in the barber business without learning something about love." That's our Floyd. And don't you just love him? This episode brings out such classic lines as "Floyd Lawson, you're a lying, deceitful wretch. And I hate ya!"; and his darting about the courthouse with his little suitecase in hand, saying to Andy, "I'm headin' for Nashville," all the time begging Andy to make him stay home. This also shows a rather odd side for Floyd because he exists in almost reality throughout this one. I mean, usually our Floyd is everywhere but where he's supposed to be. Know what I mean? Hold a gun on most people and it calms them down real quick like; hold one on Floyd, and he just sits there on a couch with dancing fruit. But that's Floyd. Always oblivious to what's going on around him, always quoting Calvin Coolidge, and always on the look-out for a good suit, even if he has to go to Mount Pilot to buy it. But in this show, he actually stays kinda grounded. No body, but no body, could have played this character as well as Howard McNear. He is the finest comedic actor- strictly for his deft delivery of a line- I have ever known. (That's my opinion, anyway.) That guy could read a phone book and have me break a rib; and yet turn right around and deliver a fine dramatic performance ("Anatomy of a Murder"). Now that's talent. Laura Lee Hobbs, dime store clerk, gold truck watcher, and knower of good talent when I see it Andy: "Floyd, Calvin Coolidge didn't say everything." Floyd says he did ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V2 #253 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
