Are you talking about Allan Melvin? If so, he is the same person who
played Harrison B. Harding in the Dick Van Dyke Show. (TAGS and Dick Van
Dyke are both tied for 1st in my book of favorite shows. Ever.)

Have you noticed that in a lot of the old movies, only the names of the really
"big stars" were even listed in the credits? Same thing with old tv shows.
Whether Betty Lynn was in Cheaper by the Dozen or not, She had a look-a-like
that was in Gone with the Wind. Every time I watch the scene of Scarlett and
her sisters out in the fields "working like plain old field hands" , I think
I am seeing a "VERY young Thelma Lou". One of Scarlette's sisters had those
big, beautiful eyes like our Thelma Lou has.
Some of us who love TAGS ought to try to find young, early (before) TAGS
actors in episodes of tv shows or in movies...when they are not even mentioned
in the credits. That would keep our eyes open; Now, wouldn't that make a good
list?

Doodles also appeared on The Handyman" episode which guest starred Edgar
Buchanan (Uncle Joe on Petticoat Junction). He was the mailman who shook
hands with Mr. Wheeler and first discovered they were soft and got Andy to
checking up on him. 'Course he told the sheriff in Mt. Pilot he wasn't
fooled. "I got a right too much smarts for that!"

Here's a good trivia question for all you TAGS info masters. How many times
did Andy come in and catch Ol' Barn asleep in the back room? And, what did he
do each time?

How about Barney the Rabbit, Barney the Beast. Quick Draw Barney. And even
Andy called him "Smoky Bear". He once said the if Mayberry had a psychiatrist

Hi Fellow Mayberrians,

I'm usually a reader, not a writer, but does anyone know how many original
Andy Griffith cast members are still alive today? I know that Andy and Barn
are alive and well. I'm interested in the more obscure
characters such as Andy's former girlfriends like Peggy and characters who
were only in a few episodes. Thanks in advance!!!!

After reading the many letters of TAGS fans naming their pets after the
actors on the show I got to thinking. And that is very dangerous for me! We
still needed to register our mini dachshaund and what better name to go with
the first name , with is Oscar than to add Bernard Fife. Therefore we now
have an Oscar Bernard Fife in the family. His bark is much worse than his
bite but he is very loyal. Just wished we hadn't of started calling him
"Oscar" so his first name could have been Bernard. Our next pet will surely
receive a TAGS name too. I am still a newcomer and just wanted to say how
much I enjoy the digest. Keep them coming! Lots of luck to you and yours!!

Hi Aunt Bee. It's only right you name a cat and not a dog after Floyd. After
all he used to practice his barberin' on cats. He'd just find them in the
alley and clip 'em. Even today people say he's not too good on people but he
does a heck of a job on cats!

That was Allan Melvin. He was in MANY episodes of TAGS. It was discussed a
month or so ago on the wbmutbb. Too bad you missed it. He was Mert's driver
on Barneys New CAr among others. He then went on to be Barney Hefner on "All
in the Family" and Sam the Butcher on "Brady Bunch". He was Sergeant Hacker
on Gomer Pyle USMC.

Now please don't take this wrong, I don't mean to perpetuate a
stereotype...but is it possible that Betty is trying to fudge on her age?
When did "Cheaper by the Dozen" come out? Many "movie star" types don't
want to reveal their true ages, thinking they might get better (younger)
roles.

Just a theory, not trying to make a big moulage out of it.

Hey to all!
I got to thinking about Betty saying she wasn't in the movie "Cheaper By The
Dozen" on the way up to Lexingon, Ky. Was this just one scene that she had
in the movie? If so was the time she was on maybe brief? It seem to me if
the part was a bit part, there would be the possibility of not remembering
such a small part.

Hmmmm wonder if Betty Lynn coms into our piece of Mayberry any where she
could put her input in and we could ALL clear this mystery up!

I am out of town but I will check my copy of the take and see what I see.

Hope someone is watching my pickle stash while I am away!

Subject: Nasty commercials invade TAGS

Hi Folks,
I hope this isn't breaking a rule, but boy am I mad!
I know different cable companies sometimes run local commericals during
national programming, but I'm wondering if any of you saw the nasty VH 1
commercial during "Goober and the Art of Love" episode tonight? It was during
the break right before the epilogue and was about some made for tv movie VH 1
is going to run. Apparently it's about a rock group into all the bad things
some rock groups get into, and one actress even spouted out "son of a ..."
(only she said it right out like that.) Obviously this was such a major
contrast to the bliss of Mayberry that it really honked me off. Perhaps this
is the kind of thing that airs at 10 p.m. on other stations, but it sure
doesn't fit in on TVland.
If someone can give me an email or other address for TVLand, I'm going to
write them and suggest they see if they can give a little more care to their
commercials. It may be something over which they have no control, but it
wouldn't hurt to try!
A regular sin town!
