Hi - just got back from vacationand am trying to catch up - you've probably
already discussed opie's name to death, so forgive me, but I was wondering if
anyone had seen the Cheers episode where everyone is talking about where the
name came from. I think Norm actually tried to call Ron Howard about it.
Does anyone remember if Ron answered him? :)

Don't know if this really relates to your topic about short sleeves
(question: did andy ever wear short sleeves?) but I remember in the early
60s, I had just entered high school and always wore shorts in the summertime.
I was harshly criticized for it (nice girls didn't wear shorts in public)
but I grew up in a small town in Illinois, and at the time, believe it or
not, I was totally innocent. Just wore them because of the heat... how nave
(as Barney pronounced it).

I don't know if KTLA is a broadcast station (I think it is), but I have been
watching TAGS on this station for the last couple of weeks. It kinda makes
it worthwile to get up at 4:45 AM, just knowing that TAGS is on in 15
minutes.

Such great observations on this super episode, dan. Daddy you are sooooo
right!! Incidentally, the writers of this one (# 144) were Bill Idelson and
Sam Bobrick. And I agree wholeheartedly with you opinion..."good job
fellows". Crystal M. (AL)

Subject: names Barney has been called

Please forgive me if this is distasteful for some of you out there but this
one absolutely cracks me up! In "Citizen's Arrest", (#106), when Barney calls
Gomer a boob it is hilarious. Then, later, Barney tells Ange that in the eyes
of the townspeople he (Barn) is a boob. The first time I heard this, I
didn't realize what they were saying but as time went on and I saw the
episode over and over, it hit me. At first I was a little surprised but then
it occured to me that the word obviously didn't have the same meaning back
then as it does today.
I think all the name-calling on the show is just so funny and am glad someone
brought it up. Thanks, all you Mayberry scholars...you always make my day!

C: He tucks the corners of the blanket under the legs of the bed ("Cousin

Paul, you are a Mayberry genius!!! I had forgotten the "Cousin Virgil" one.

I also missed the bit in the "conversation" after Goober and Lydia crash the
bridge game that goes something like--

Helen: Lydia, what does your father do?

Lydia: My father works.

Andy: That's good.

Barney: Welllll. . . . You're absolutely right, absolutely right . . . .

Andy: (to Barn) Hmm?

Barney: Well, when a person WORKS, and the person ENJOYS their work . . .
(trails off and makes poofy cheek faces)

Lydia: My father hates his work.

This brought back fond memories. In the 70's and 80s when my children were
in school, that's EXACTLY what I would tell them as they left each morning.
And then they would head off for their education (it was worth every penny).
They learned how we came from monkeys - how to handcuff fellow students to
the flag pole - how to pray without anybody noticing. They got to write
their sentence - my son got to write sentences 100 times ever so often. Know
what for? Doing his Barney Fife imitations. BTW - Helen Crump was
definitely NOT one of the teachers.
Linda - the Goober who liked the 4th grade so much, I did it 3 times.

Answering the question which episode makes me cry? I can honestly say
that I have never seen a single episode that didn't leave me misty eyed
for one reason or another. No matter how many times I see them!

Yes, William Shallert was on the Patty Duke show a few months ago, and
that was another heart-warming reunion! Lordy, I do get weepy! I love
when Darlene Darling hollers: "That'n makes me cry!!" Anyone recall the
name of the song? Was that "Dirty Me"?

I also wanted to tell Harvey Bullock how much I appreciated his work!
Thank you sir, for many years of absolute joy!

Since there has been so much talk about kids watching TAGS I
thought I would mention that my fifteen month old daughter
dances to TAGS theme song every time it comes on. I plan to
raise her watching TAGS because it is very inspirational to
me as a single mother and it has good family values for my
daughter to learn.

My favorite heart-ripping-tissue-time is when Andy explains to Opie how much
he loves him even if he does invite Peggy to go fishing.

Second is seeing Mr. Tucker nodding peacefully after peeling an apple
completely without breaking the rind. That's what life should be all about -
internally at peace with the world, knowing you've done your best, no matter
what!

It's crying time again.........

OK....I'm a school principal...and years ago they took our "board of
education...AKA our paddle...away. I'm not a real big fan of corporal
punishment....but...at times...it seemd to do the trick. My question
is.....was there ever any hard evidence that Opie was paddled by Andy?
I think I remember an episode or two...but I'm not sure.

Hello Mayberry
Haven't added anything to the digest in a long time,
but have enjoyed reading and hearing all the dialogue
from everyone.
While I was home in the US this summer did get to see
the Biography shown about Don Knotts and enjoyed it
very much. I had seen one for Andy in the past, but
never Don Knotts and learned a great deal about his
life from watching it.

I also received my package of all the photos re 40
Acres and other pics and really treasure them. I saw
Ron Howard being interviewed one day and he was saying
something about the Real McCoy's house not being too
far from where they filmed. I wasn't sure when he was
talking if he meant 40 Acres area or Franklin Canyon.
Does anyone know. If the house was located on 40
Acres, is it possible to locate it in the pictures?
Just wondering if anyone knows. I saw some reruns of
the McCoy's and it peaked my interest. Sorry, didn't
mean to intrude another show into the Mayberry digest,
but the Ron Howard interview sort of linked me to this
question!

Have a great Mayberry kind of day!

Subject: Goober, King of theTriplets

I have to say that, for my money, Goober is probably the king of triplets as
far as TAGS goes. I can remember three times he delivered an entire triplet
BY HIMSELF!

In the episode that introduced Goober, I think it was "Fun Girls," (I could
be wrong so don't flog me too hard) Gomer tries to goad him into performing
for Andy and then again for Helen and Thelma Lou. Gomer tells him to "take
off on Cary Grant."

Goober: "naw."

Gomer: "Come on."

Goober: "Oh Gomer!"

Andy: "Well, if he doesn't want to-_"

Goober: "I'll DO it!"

This happens again with "sewing up his fingers at the dance," and then again
in the episode "Goober and the Art of Love," where they discuss whether or
not he wants to go to the movies with the two couples.

If you study comedy and comic theory, you will find that TAGS really is a
premier venue for so many techniques. It just came naturally to the great
cast. I know that there are many Sunday School classes that are using TAGS
to teach moral principles, but I wonder if there are any film/comedy/writing
school courses that use TAGS to teach the basic fundamentals of what is
funny and how to hone the art of making people laugh.

Hey, y'all, I'm a new Mayberry resident and I was just
wondering....what's the population of Mayberry? Was it ever mentioned on
TAGS?
>>>

When John Masters was searching for a good tenor, he gave it as 2,000. A
few years later in "The Statue," it is said to be 1,800. In "The Legend of
Barney Fife," Andy says the Mayberry Gazette has 2,000 loyal readers, so
that's another clue. In the final episode, a sign at the train depot in
puts it at 5,360.

Apparently Mayberry's population fluctuates at wildly unpredictable rates.
