Didn't we have a big old discussion awhile back about Clara's pickles
and the use of allspice? I thought there was some debate as to whether
going wild with allspice was a proper seasoning for dill pickles. There
was an article in the Detroit Free Press this week about the huge
amounts of pickles produced in the thumb area of Michigan (including
some recipes) and the following comment did mention the spice so favored
by our 12 year blue ribbon winner. The article on non-kerosene cukes is
here: http://www.freep.com/features/food/pickle26_20000726.htm in case
anyone wants to read it
Here's a bit of the text

I was watching Maverick (Bart, I believe, with Jack Kelly in the starring
role), and I saw numerous alumnus from TAGS. Most prevalent was Howard
McNear as a writer. Also were George Kennedy as a good-bad guy to the
character of Edgar Buchanan who played the local sheriff. What a
twist....LOL

Subject: Crying towel
Well, making me cry isn't too much of a feat--I've been known to burst into
tears in the Hallmark store!! However, the Mayberry moments that make me
cry are:
1. Andy to Opie in "Opie the Birdman": Don't the trees seem nice and full?
2. In "The New Housekeeper," when Opie cries to Aunt Bee "You need me!"
3. In "Opie and the Bully", when Opie brings a change of clothes for Andy
to keep for him down at the courthouse, they have a few lines of dialogue
about Aunt Bee fussin' 'bout a fellers' clother getting messed up. They
look at each other and Andy picks up Opie and gives him a big hug
4. Barney's imaginary conversation with Thelma Lou when he tells her
"You're the cats!"
As far as the paddling goes, we never see Andy actually swat Opie with a
paddle (or anything else). But there are enough references to it that I
believe Andy did give Opie a "whoopin'" once in a while.
"Is he gonna get a whippin', Pa?"
"Don't you think he deserves it?"
"I wouldn't like to say...after all, he's one of my own kind."

I saw Matlock on TBS today and the man playing the judge looked very
familiar - checked the credits and it was Everett Greenbaum! The only time I
ever remember seeing him was on one of the TAGS anniversary shows.
>>>
Outside of Matlock, I've only seen him in two shows: "The New Andy Griffith
Show" (an unsuccessful 1971 series), and Seinfeld (the one where George
pretended to be handicapped at work).

>>>The Digest said a number of Mayberryites appeared in my all time favorite
movie, "Its a Wonderful Life." Who are they?
>>>
This is my all-time favorite movie as well. I've spotted six cross-overs.
Name of actor: role on TAGS / role in IAWL
1. Mary Treen: Rose the housekeeper (episode #1, + other characters later)
/ Cousin Tilly
2. Charles Lane: Mr. Frisby the egg man / Potter's "skinny little rent
collector"
3. Dick Elliot: Mayor Pike / man on porch who hollers "Why don't you kiss
her instead of talking her to death?"
4. Ellen Corby: Myrt "Hubcaps" Lesch / lady who asks to withdraw $17.50
5. Almira Sessions: Mrs. Fletcher (Sam Jones' housekeeper) / Potter's
secretary
6. Frank Albertson: Col. Watson (Gomer pilot) / Sam Wainwright
There was also a Hal Landon on TAGS (Barney's Sidecar) but I don't know if
he's the same Hal Landon who played Marty Hatch. Sheldon Leonard (executive
producer of TAGS) played Nick the bartender in IAWL, but he never appeared
on screen on TAGS. He did, however, appear in a Gomer Pyle episode.

I have 4 scenes that come to mind>>>
1 the scene where Andy and Barney are out on Sam Beckers porch after the
baby is born and Sam comes running out and tells Andy that he needs help
that Andy won't quit crying. And then Andy says questionable like "Andy".
2 The scene where Opie realizes he has killed the mama bird and he cries
and begs it to wake up.
3 The scene in the first episode when Opie runs out to stop Aunt Bee from
leaving.
4 The scene when Barney comes back in after the Mayor tells him to come on,
in the horsethief episode and tells Andy he remembered a few years back when
another mayor had a ridiculous idea, the idea of Andy making Barney his
deputy.
I know there are more but those are all I can think of at the moment.

I watch TAGs religously, and there are quite a few times that I catch myself
getting a little teary eyed. There are some episodes that I will get a
little misty eyed a couple times in the 30 minute show. But, there are at
least 10 episodes that make me cry everytime I watch them, and sometimes I
will get a little teary eyed before the part I know that makes me cry,
knowing it is coming up. But here's a brief list of them, and what part I
like.
1). Mr. McBeevee (66)...upstairs in Opie's room when Andy is explaining to
Opie what will happen if he doesn't tell the truth about Mr. McBeevee, and
then when Andy comes back down and explains to Aunt Bee, and Barney why he
didn't spank him.
2). The New Housekeeper (1)...when Opie comes running out to Aunt Bee, and
Andy explaining that she couldn't make it without him.
3). Andy on Trial (61)...when Barney is explaining to the publisher and his
reporter that it's not so much by the book, but by the heart.
4). Opie's Charity (5)...when Opie tells Andy what he was saving his
allowance for, to by his girl friend a coat for winter.
5). The Cow Thief (70)...when Barney comes back into the house explaining
that he can recall that another Mayor thought Andy had a hair brain idea of
hiring him as his deputy.
6). The Bed Jacket (75)...when Andy gives Aunt Bee the bed jacket, after she
had thought that he really had not gotten that, even though he had to give
away his prize fishing rod (Eagle Eye Annie), (in this episode, I haven't
seen this ending for quite a while, but I could sware he get's that fishing
rod back) Maybe I was just dreaming that.
7). Barney and the Cave Rescue (109)...when Andy comes out of the cave
letting the people know that it could have been anyone in there, and that
they are lucky to have Barney as a friend.
8). The Christmas Story (11)...when ole' Ben is bringing the gifts in the
jail house and giving them to everyone.
9). Opie and the Carnival (158)...when Opie get's his second chance at
hitting the five bullseyes for the razor.
10). Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee (58)...when Andy is explaining to Aunt Bee,
that her marrying someone isn't going to be right for them, unless it's right
for her.
Well, there are my favorite ten. Hopefully it will bring back some memories
for others to think about.
Newland S. McElfresh III
No.....no....no...but I do believe in Opie.
