Airy News >>>From: Jake <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I have a question about Episode 154: Aunt Bee's Invisible Beau. I was watching it last night and Andy was reading a newspaper in one part and I thought it said Mt. Airy news. >>> Andy subtly slipped that in as a way of saying "Hey" to the folks back home. He also reads The Mt. Airy News in "Howard the Comedian." - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 07:36:26 -0500 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: setting for Gomer >>>From: "Michael Eury" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Did the program ever reveal in which STATE of the USA Gomer's marine base was located? As a North Carolina native I've always assumed it was in NC, since the eastern part of NC has many military bases and since Andy drove Gomer to the base in the TAGS pilot for Gomer's spinoff. But on some episodes of USMC there seems to be the implication that the base is located elsewhere, perhaps California (although that's obviously where it was filmed). >>> The first season was set in Camp Wilson, NC. Beginning with the second season, the whole platoon was transferred out to Camp Henderson, CA, said to be near San Diego. I guess the producers did this to expose Gomer to new and different (and funnier) situations. Besides, NC looked rather gray, and CA was nice and colorful. Both TAGS and Gomer Pyle USMC were filmed on the Desilu lot (later Paramount). - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2000 06:59:57 +0100 From: Paul Jennings <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V2 #262 Well Spyda Bite....if Andy hadn't a shot Luck Comstock....there would be no Mayberrry Knot Tying Class! "That's a nice one you got there boys!" You're right.....that's the fourth time Andy fired a gun. I was wonderin'....the episode in which Andy gathered in those fellas (four of 'em) for moonshinin'....and he had a cast or something on his finger....what really happened to Andy Griffith? Did he had an accident....or was this merely written in the script? Looks like he might have been hurt for real. Anyone out there know......I'll bet ol' Paul Mulik can tell us.....he's the Johnny Paul Jason of TAGS! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 09:06:05 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Dick Elliot and Cheerio Meredith (Emma) In a message dated 7/31/00 8:17:48 PM Central Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << His final episode was #48, "The Manicurist." Both Dick Elliot and Cheerio Meredith (Emma) died shortly after that episode was filmed. ---Paul >> Hey To All! I didn't realize the passing of Cheerio still that early in TAGS. Her episodes were still in b&w but I could have bet a soda pop I saw her in Andy's movie "An Angel In My Pocket". I thought she was one of the church woman opposing the new minister. Hmmm...did anyone see that movie? Who were the two women? I thought one was Cheerio and the other was Margaret Hamiliton. Ms. McCay is best known for her role of Caroline Brady on the long-running "Days of Our Lives." >> Yes I agree, that was Peggy McCay (aka Caroline Brady from "Days") playing Sharon. I was looking at the episode yesterday as I was crafting and it got me to thinking (kind of hard to have the bucket on and the paint brush in hand at the same time)... It seems to me, Peggy was other episodes as various characters in Mayberry. Did she start her career as a character actress? Counting Those Pickles! Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 09:22:57 -0500 From: "Wendy Phillips" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Chinatown I've noticed Aunt Bee sings "Chinatown" in so many episodes. I can't say I know what they are right off the bat, but it's about 5 or 6. I know one for sure: "Aunt Bee's Medicine Man" and there's another one where she's happy about a guy coming (could it be the Roger No-I-Won't-Break-Rule-#2 Hanover episode?). There's at least one color ep and maybe 2 or 3 more eps. She sings it whenever she's really happy about something. I'm going to write them down next time I go through my tapes. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 10:19:12 -0400 From: "Paul Gilkes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Jim Nabors on MSNBC I checked the MSNBC Cable site and saw that Jim Nabors Headliners and Legends Interview with Matt Lauer, pre-empted July 25 for coverage of the Concorde plane crash, has been rescheduled for this Sunday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. It sometimes replays early the following morning, but the schedule doesn't indicate that. This is the second time I've seen "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs" on Nick and TVLand, and I just wince when our beloved "giraffes are selfish" speech is omitted. I always wonder who makes the decisions on what scenes to cut. I know the rest of the WBMUTBB members feel the same way. It just frosts me! Don't want to make a big moulage out of this but I have a feeling that we will be talking about this travesty of justice for a long time to come! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 09:26:17 -0500 From: "Hull, Darrin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Triplets, triplets, triplets Excellent observations Rick! The "He's a nut" comment is actually a DOUBLE TRIPLET! If I remember correctly, that sequence of lines is repeated three times in that episode, making it a triplet of a triplet. Very rare! Here's a classic triplet from "Man in a Hurry." Barney talks about how the Fife family never seems to gain a pound because it always goes to muscle. He makes the point twice and then Andy delivers the punch line the third time. Excellent comedy theory! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 11:11:20 -0400 From: "Noel & Susan Houze" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Otis trivia Otis was first arrested for drinking at 2:00 pm on Sept. 23, 1941. Most of you have probably never heard of him, but look on the closing credits of every episode and you will see his name. He was the makeup artist for the entire run of the show. Like Andy, Lee was a native of North Carolina, Rutherfordton to be specific. I was raised in the same county and worked for the local paper for many years. Lee retired to his hometown and on occasion helped the arts council with makeup related issues in local productions. I had an opportunity to do a story on him once, and it was amazing to see him dig through his kit. He would pull out a mustache or a fake nose and say that such and such an actor wore this in such and such a movie. Lee told me that he subscribed to the Rutherford County News during his years in Hollywood, and that Andy would sometimes peruse the paper to get ideas for character names. Lee passed away a few years ago and Andy came to town for the funeral. From all accounts, they were close friends. If Harvey is reading this, I would love to hear his comments on Lee and perhaps other unsung behind-the-scenes people who helped make Mayberry a reality. (Laf-AEP)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Dogs, Dogs, Dogs I was shocked last night that the entire "Giraffes are selfish" bit was edited out of the "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs "episode on Nick-At-Nite. We went from Barney telling Opie how dogs can't be struck by lightning, to "Let's go out & get them dogs!" Glad I wasn't taping that one for posterity! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2000 13:02:42 -0400 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Uncondional Mayberry, prices. On July 12th. my little dog companion passed away, leaving me with a deep loss. Every night he would sit with me and watch TAGS and now I sit alone but there is still some comfort in this. Dogs are known for their unconditional love and as I watch TAGS now I can see that same sentiment in Mayberry. It doesn't matter if Barney messed up, Gomer was a pest or Andy was a "little slack" in his duties, every one was accepted for who they were. It touches my soul to see this and brings me comfort in my time of loss, helping me to cope. Now as time passes I'm planning on finding another companion and want to name him/her a TAGS name. I thought for a her - Checkpoint Chickie and for a him - Andy, naturally. How ironic there were pet names in the bulletin just when I was going to ask for some ideas. Also, I'm amazed as I watch TAGS and the prices - lettuce:$.09, ham:$.39/pound, tomatoes:$.19/pound, quart of ice cream:$.50, car battery $12.99, hair cut $1.75 (butch $2.00) and did Barney say he could get $2,500 for Andy's house?! Has anybody else noticed the prices of things? "But Barney, those are all legitimate deductions. You know what they say, you can't take it with you." "Take it with me?! At this rate I'll be lucky if I get to go myself". Unconditional best wishes to all.... Barb ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Aug 2000 15:32:50 -0700 From: "Janet K. I don't know in what other episodes it may have been mentioned, but a song called (I think) "Texarkana in the Morning" was talked about in the episode "A Singer in Town" (aired 4/11/66). > Here's another bit of trivia for all you plungers! > WHO said "when I get married it's going to be to a girl just like > me" > and WHAT was the episode. (I laughed for an hour after hearing > this!!) In "Howard and Millie" (aired 11/27/67), Goober tells Andy, "When I get married, I'm gonna marry exactly the same kind of woman I am. That ain't gonna be easy to find, you know." Andy agreed. Janet ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
