Subject: SOCIABILITY BEHIND THE SCENES?
In an earlier Digest a viewer asked if there were after-hours social contacts
between cast and crew of TAGS. Well, TV is a kaleidoscopical business.
Associates come and go at a feverish pace, it is difficult to make liasons,
there are vastly differing circles and interests...plus the very real need to
get away from the grind. Added to this is the fact that the writers are very
seldom seen on the sound stages...they work in a different orbit, in effect
just sliding their scripts under the door and running: to sell another story
somewhere else. They may never meet the performers who pronounce their words..
There are exceptions. I came to Hollywood in early 60"s, no credits, no
contacts, living in a seedy motel and driving a Rent-a-wreck. My wife and
three young daughters were back in New York awaiting word as to whether I
could find a job. My script for OPIE'S HOBO FRIEND was bought, and things
began to blossom.
That Xmas, our family was together in a small two bed-one-bath house in the
Valley just in time for Xmas.Life was wondrous! And who showed up to help us
wrap gifts for our kids....?...Don Knots and wife Kaye.!!!!!What a thrill. I
shall never forget Don playing that very shakey nervous guy as he tried to
assemble a doll carriage!
I add that I get a Christmas card from Andy Griffith every year, usuually
with a photo of himself and Cindi and their dog of the marvelous name, Mary
Margaret Ritter.
And I get a nice long phone callm from Andy about twice a year. He dearly
loves to work and is constantly exuding ideas.
So yes, we hold all others of TAGS in great esteem, they are parts of a great
experience. But it's on and over the top to new challenges.
And we'll always have the memories.

I just returned from a visit to Mt. Airy. This was the first time I had gone
there. I stayed at a great place, The Mayberry Motor Lodge. I enjoyed
seeing the town and especially enjoyed the memorabilia of Andy at the
Visitors' Center. I want to go back soon and stay longer!

Tom, thanks for sharing that about Lee Greenway! I loved hearing about
a "behind the scenes" person from the show. And how interesting to
hear about Andy perusing the hometown newspaper for ideas for character
names! I always find a name or two in my own hometown newspaper that
sound like Mayberry characters.

Thanks to all who wrote with sympathies on the demise of the selfish
giraffes. :-)
I don't remember the original "triplets" post so I don't know if this one was
in there, but there was one in the "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs" episode where Barney
says the plan might work and Andy says, "Yeah but it might not" and Barney
says it might and Andy says, "Yeah, but it might not", so then Barney hollers
about Andy not being optimistic and Andy agrees that it might work, to which
Barney replies, "Yeah but it might not". Verrrrry funny! :-)

Subject: Tribute to Mayberry show next week
It is almost time for the next big TAGS event, "A Tribute to
Mayberry", in Pigeon Forge on August 7th (Monday) at 7pm.
Several members of the local Knoxville "Mayberry" chapter
are planning to meet at O'Charley's in Pigeon Forge around
5pm and have a bite to eat before the big show. If you are
attending the show, feel free to join us at the restaurant. It
is located on the main highway near the Country Tonite
Theatre.

I really believe that Ernest T. was able to write phonetically, but his
sweet Romeena wanted him to be able to write the Kings' English. At least
that is the humble opinion of one man. And do you believe that TV Land cut
the "boy giraffes are selfish"? I know, I know, I have been among the
biggest supporters of the epilogues, but boy this one really frosts me. Of
course remember what I am complaining about. After all, I watch the
greatest TV show ever on a daily basis and my complaining is purely
tongue-in-cheek.
I love this digest by the way. I face Alabama every morning and give
thanks for Mr. Newsome.

I know what they are right off the bat, but it's about 5 or 6.

I think you'll find that there are three: "Aunt Bee's Medicine Man," "Aunt
Bee the Swinger," and "Aunt Bee's Restuarant." In the last, she confides to
Andy that it's one of her favorite songs.
Okay trivia experts, here's a stumper for you: Based on the number of times
we hear him sing, hum, or whistle it, what is Andy Taylor's favorite song?
I confess I have not counted the number of episodes, but the song I'm
thinking of seems to be in at least eight or nine of them.

(four of 'em) for moonshinin'....and he had a cast or something on his
finger....what really happened to Andy Griffith?......I'll bet ol'
Paul Mulik can tell us.....he's the Johnny Paul Jason of TAGS!
>>>
According to a story I read somewhere several years ago (I think it was in
TV Guide),
Andy Griffith got mad and punched his fist into a wall, injuring his hand.
Since his character was a lawman, it was easy to write it into the script as
an injury sustained in the line of duty. He has the cast in two consecutive
episodes, "Aunt Bee the Warden" and "The County Nurse."
Here's one for you nitpickers: The opening shot of "Aunt Bee the Warden"
shows the 1962 squad car zooming down a country road, but when they arrive
at the courthouse, suddenly they're in the '63 model! I guess Andy got a
call from the Ford dealer on the car's radio and decided to stop off on the
way back (with four prisoners in custody) and pick up his new car.
I'm starting to drift a little bit here, but does it strike anyone else as
odd that the Mayberry Sheriff's Office was able to buy a brand new car every
year? In "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs" they couldn't even afford a couple of new cots.

Subject: Mayberry in Another Novel
While reading Iris Johansen's novel "The Face of Deception", I once again
came across a reference to Andy and the sleepy village of Mayberry.
A police officer was telling a close friend that he had had to kill three
people in the line of duty since becoming a police officer. After his
friend told him how shocked she was he said, "And I'd do it again. You
weren't ready to face the idea that I wasn't Andy Griffith ambling around
Mayberry. You may never be ready"
I believe this is the 6th reference I have come across in the past two
years of my novel reading. Apparently he carrried more than one bullet in
his pocket.

Subject: Upcoming Mayberry Events
Hello to all my friends in Mayberry!
I wanted to let everyone know about an event that was coming up in Knoxville,
TN. There is a retired gentleman (and his wife) here in town that has been
working on a life-size replica of "Mayberry" for the past five years and is
going to have it on display September 2 (Saturday before Labor Day). His
name is John Hitch and he got the idea at a family reunion when a second
cousin mentioned he'd redone a child's bedroom in Mayberry motif.
The event will began at 12pm and go to midnight. John's display will include
Floyd's Barbershop, the Bluebird Diner, Wally's Service Station, the Mayberry
police car, the Darling family truck and Aunt Bee's kitchen along with a jar
of kerosene cucumbers on the shelf. He says there will be "country, gospel,
bluegrass, and just have a big time."
Also, don't forget "A Tribute to Mayberry" in Pigeon Forge, TN on August 7.
I hope to see you there. If you would like directions to either event,
please let me know and I'll be glad to give them to you.
Have a great day!
Darin

Subject: Andy's Age
There are inconsistencies. His class was listed as two different years on two
different episodes. And when he was trying to end the "feudin' he told the
Wakefield and McCarters that he learned a little french while he was over
there during the war. It's easy to find these, but it's more fun to just
enjoy every episode. Hey, Paul Mulik, how is Andy doing since his heart
attack?

Subject: Helen Crump, Public Enemy No. 1?
Hey y'all,
I hope somebody will PLEASE help me. I was watching a TAGS that I had
never seen before. The one where Andy comes across an old newspaper clipping
about Helen being arrested on felony charges. Andy tried desperately to find
out details, and then just as Helen was called before the school board....my
power went out! I couldn't see the ending! I know it all had to be some
mix-up, but how? I had to guess at the outcome, and this is what I came up
with (forgive me if I'm way off): The school or PTA threw a Vegas Night fund
raiser. As part of the entertainment the event was raided by "police" who
"arrest" Helen, then the community pitches in to "bail" her out of jail. Of
course, all the money goes to a good cause and everyone has a fun time. The
event even makes the local paper. Years later, Andy sees the newspaper
clipping, thinks the arrest was real, and that's what starts everyone in
Mayberry wondering about our school marm. Well....was I at least close?
Helen, I never doubted you!
Garry (the stranger in town)
