Hello everyone, Yesterday I was talking to my new neighbor here in Wake
Forest, NC and she mentioned that she had a cousin who gave tours to celebs
at the establishment that we native Orlandans call the Rat House. Her
cousin said he gave Andy Griffith a guided tour once and found him to have
no personality and not very nice. I was shocked. I think the only
explanation is that Andy is shy. I have never heard Andy referred to in
this way. My neighbor said her cousin said that he changed totally when he
got before the cameras. What about it? Has anyone else ever heard this?
Personally I think her cousin had to be mistaken. Thanks, Maria

Subject: Don Knotts' health

I remember several years ago that Don Knotts was having vision problems.
I believe while he was working on Matlock he memorized his lines with
someone reading them to him. Other than that I haven't heard anything
but he seemed in different stages of somewhat frailty in each of the 3
times I spent with him. The time when we were the closest to him and he
autographed our books he seemed to have a lot of spunk. I believe older
folks just get tired quicker than you young whippersnappers out there!
The time he called us to decline an invitation he was real perky and it
was late at night too! And of course he's so nice and obliging you just
want to cuddle him. I don't mean that with any disrespect.

show? I have a friend that says otherwise! Please let
me know if this true!

Subject: Gomer Pyle

There was a question reguarding Gomer's changes from TAGS to his show.
I put on my bucket and a got to thank'in....Gomer was sure of himself at
home in
Mayberry because it was just that ...home.....he then went to the Marines
... It's like he
told Andy, it was a test. He knew his daddy would'nt always be around.
He had
to learn to fend for himself and his daddy said someday you'll be tested.
 Gomer told
Andy that the Marines was that test. So I think Gomer was rather
helpless because
it was a new life in a new place with strangers...people that were not
like the folks
in Mayberry. He also went a from small town to a big place.. Camp
Henderson..the
culture and lifestyle were completely different so he came across like a
fish out of water...
and he was. I think he made the adjustment well and I loved how his
character matured.
I just love Gomer and love to see him dance!!!! I love all of the
episodes of TAGS that
feature our Gomer.. but has anyone noticed his speaking voice quality
changed from
TAGS to Gomer Pyle USMC?? He sounds different.
There I said it and I ain't taken it back!!!!

Have a Mayberry day.......Pauline in Ms (Gomerseyshey)

>I'm a new member of WBMUTBB and have enjoyed reading the digest. Since I
live in Ohio, I was curious just which "small Ohio town" that Joe A.
Gritton had his Man-in-a-Hurry experience.
(Hope I did this right since this is my first posting) Kathy<

Kathy, you did just fine with your posting. Thanks for your question and
thanks to Kirk for his comment. I dug out my files (I didn't know if it was
under C for Car V for Van or S for State Attorney's office---It was A for
Auto Maintenance.) The town was Bellville Ohio. F&W Repair Shop was the
"Wally's" shop that took care of us.

Kirk, I think the reason that you and I identified with that character, that
episode, is that it exemplifies what we would like our life to be like
through all the qualities of Mayberry and its fine people. That's why
Man-in-a-Hurry remains so popular. All of us who grew up in small towns
like to refer to them as "just like Mayberry" because the Griffith show
brought out all the good qualities of small-town living. I lived in a
one-stoplight town, and my father ran an automobile business. I can still
remember people stopping by our house after hours or on Sunday because they
really really needed a part for their car or truck. Dad would always go get
his keys and his shoes, and off he'd go to take care of them. Its
refreshing to find people today who still have that Community/helpful
spirit.

Now that you got me on my hometown--I have a question for you other
"townies". We didn't have an Ernest T Bass but we did have a local legend.
"Earl" had a small house with upside-down shingles and curtains on the
outside of a couple windows. He pushed his mower all over town to cut
grass. He had rough skin, wore dark clothes, and a wide brim hat. He sat on
his front stoop with this particularly odd stance. Occasionally kids would
stop by and get him to talking. Like Earnest T, he had an unforgettable
voice and diction (no teeth on the lower). Didn't every small town have an
Ernest T? I think the wise Andy Griffith and the writers/producers knew
that.
Tell us about your Ernest T... Allan keep me honest if this is on-topic.
Characters in small
towns like Ernest T Bass In Mayberry. (other TAGS character/episodes you
would want to be also)

Good Morning Friends,

I know several people have mentioned this before, but it can't be
emphasized enough! If you're heading to Branson, Missouri, DO NOT MISS the
Rodney Dillard and the Boys from Mayberry show!

The music is top notch, a mixture of bluegrass, gospel, country, patriotic.
A finer bunch of musicians you will not hear anywhere. On top of that, they
are the nicest bunch of folks you'll ever meet. They all come out at
intermission to sign autographs, answer questions, have photos taken. Then
as the 2nd half of the show starts, Rodney comes out on stage and takes
questions from the audience about TAGS! I was there this past Monday (Aug.
14). Someone asked a question about Charlene, he mentioned that she was
thinking about moving to Branson and opening a Bed & Breakfast.

Good Day to All!

Hey Folks,

Here's something I've been working on. I still haven't been able to "filter"
things like I would like to but it looks like I have it about as good as I'm
gonna get it for a while.

I've set up a "Yahoo" like directory at Mayberry.com

http://www.mayberry.com/cgi-bin/odpv3/index.cgi

That URL will take you there and you can use it kind'a like you would Yahoo,
Lycos or Excite to find web sites you're searching for. I've tried to make it
family friendly but I've been only partially successful in doing so.

Parents will still need to be with your children when using Sarah's Mayberry
Directory. I believe that parents are the best "filters" we can have on the
internet so y'all spend time with your "Opie's" when they're online.

I hope you like the new Directory but for now the only way to get there is
from the link I gave you above. I haven't placed a link on the web site for
it yet.

*****MAYBERRY DESKTOP WALLPAPER*****

I've also added, recently, some great new Mayberry wallpaper for your
computer desktop. They were supplied to me by WBMUTBB Chapter member Dennis
Atkins (same feller that designed out WBMUTBB Mouse pads, I have several left
if you want one...hint, hint). Thanks to Dennis for these WONDERFUL designs
that we can use as or desktops!! The look great so even if you're not looking
for one, drop by just to see 'em.

http://mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/anewsome/private/desktopthemes.htm

That's a long URL so if it doesn't work for you, just go to the TAGSRWC web
site (http://mayberry.com/tagsrwc/) and click on the "Themes & Screensavers"
link on the main page.

Hey Doll ... If you saw Denver Pyle in Bonnie and Clyde, you must have seen
Barney's Cousin Virgil, driving the get away car. If memories serves, Virg
couldn't do anything while somebody was watching him, this characteristic
might have been a nice twist in the Bonnie and Clyde movie. Can't you just
picture it, they're watching him drive away and he drives into the nearest
building or whatever .... Skippy ... a.k.a. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mayberry's
other fun girl.
P.S. Does anybody know the actor's name that played Cousin Virg?
Mailed any post cards lately?

Subject: Mayberry in Knoxville, TN

Just thought I'd let everyone know that John Hitch is building a portion
of Mayberry here in Knoxville! There was a big article in the local
"Metro Pulse" publication here in Knoxville in July that has an interview
with him. You can see the entire story online at=20

http://www.metropulse.com/dir_zine/dir_2000/1029/t_cover2.html

Our Knoxville "Mayberry" chapter is even mentioned briefly in the article.=20
He will be having a FREE all day gathering to see his Mayberry replicas
on Saturday, Sept. 2 beginning at noon. Here are a few snippets from the
article:=20

John Hitch and His Backyard Museum=20

He's been at it for nearly five years, but now, he's=20
working under a deadline. By midday, Sept. 2, it's got=20
to be finished=E2=80=94Floyd's Barbershop, the Bluebird=20
Diner, Wally's Service Station=E2=80=94all of it's got to be=20
done if he's going to be ready in time for his big Labor=20
Day weekend wingding, complete with food vendors=20
and porta-potties, to which you are cordially invited.=20

The gas pumps will be lit and the Firestone Tire=20
displays will be out front of the service station where=20
Goober and Gomer used to work. The Mayberry=20
police car, a 1951 Studebaker, will be painted and=20
restored and there'll be black-and-white checkered=20
linoleum on the diner floor. The Darling family truck is=20
available (but may not be ready, since there's just so=20
much a man can do in the heat of the summer), and the=20
place will be a veritable country music museum of the=20
sort John tried to get the city of Knoxville to build a=20
long time ago. He has made up his mind that this=20
project is going to get done this summer, come heck or=20
high water.=20

"I get some of the nicest compliments there ever was,"=20
he says. "At first, I was scared to death that the=20
neighbors would think I was building a junkyard. I=20
didn't want them to think I was a fruitcake. What I've=20
got here is collectibles. It's stuff I love, and it's unreal,=20
the people who have come here. There's a little store=20
right below the house where people will stop and ask=20
for directions. They'll ask them if there's a guy around=20
here building Mayberry... "=20

He and his wife Ruby always have a big party the=20
Saturday before Labor Day, and by that date this year,=20
John plans to have moved a goodly amount of his=20
country music and Mayberry memorabilia out of his=20
basement and into the backyard village. Aunt Bee's=20
kitchen, complete with chintz curtains and a jar of=20
kerosene cucumbers on the shelf, will stay right where=20
it is=E2=80=94in the room behind the Hitches' real kitchen,=20
adjacent to the back porch that doubles as a sound=20
stage every Labor Day weekend.=20

"People'll be coming in from Nashville, North and=20
South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia=E2=80=94anybody can=20
come. Just bring your coolers (no liquor, please) and=20
we'll be out here from 12 to 12 the Saturday before=20
Labor Day. We'll have country, gospel, bluegrass, and=20
just have a big time." =20
- ----
I can provide directions if anyone is interested in attending. The
Mayberry chapter will be setting up a table at the event with copies of
our newsletter, business cards and pictures of chapter events. I hope
folks from all over can attend!
