I once heard that an African American never appeared in the show? I have a friend that says otherwise! Please let me know if this true! It was slim (remember the times), but I know on the Episode where the fellow wanted to become a Mayberry citizen, we had a crowd shot. May have been more as Mayberry RFD or some of the color episodes started. Bill "Citizens arrest ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 07:21:51 -0500 From: "David A. Unfortunately with the crush of media and his manager trying to get him away, it was extremely brief. We shook hands, I told him I was the founder of the Opie Chapter and thanked him for all the pleasure he'd brought to my life. He said "how do you do" and managed a smile and that was about it. My hubby didn't even have time to snap a photo. I have heard tales of grumpiness and his remarks that day onstage hinted at it. You have to remember that he still suffers with that painful Gullain-Barre syndrome and you have to take into consideration that even though the show was named for him and designed for his talent, Don Knotts ended up winning all the awards and getting more attention than he did; that's true even today. And I believe Andy is an entirely different personality in that he actually shuns attention and fussing; he's much more quiet and introspective, preferring to live away from Hollywood and spending a lot of time fishing. He said he was embarassed every time someone begain whistling the TAGS theme in airports, etc. When you think about it, it's to his credit that he is so very fond of Don and still close to him today despite the accolades he's received sorta' at Andy's expense. Well I didn't mean to ramble on but I wanted to throw my 2 cents in so no one will feel negative towards our beloved sheriff. You can order discount tickets from a radio station in Aurora, MO. (Aurora is about an hour or two drive from Branson, so you'll need to have them mail you your tickets before you leave.) The tickets are normally $39.00 a pair, but you can get them for $27.00 a pair if your order them from KSWM. For details, visit their website at: http://www.magiccircleradio.com/kswm/. Click on the "Discount Branson Tickets" link at the right and scroll down that page. The show is #13 on the list and a toll-free ordering number is at the top. While you're there, check out some of the other discounted shows. The station has worked out a tickets-for-advertising deal with the Branson shows. It runs ads for the shows at a discounted price, plus a number of tickets for the season; then the station sells the tickets to make up the rest of the ad revenue. I've ordered tickets from KSWM many times, and they always treat you right. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 06:53:36 -0700 (PDT) From: Debbie Needham <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V2 #286 Does anybody know the actor's name that played Cousin Virg? I am puzzled over the radical change to the character of Gomer from TAGS to GP-USMC.) Yes I too have noticed the change. Gomer could be downright surly sometimes before he jined up with the United States Marine Corpse. Cases in point: When he is talking about his fishing trip at Wally's and a customer honks his horn, Gomer replies, "Be with you in a minute! (Aside) Man ain't got but two hands!" Other incidences: "You hear that folks? They's two sets of laws, one for the po-lice and one for the ordinary citizen!" "I'll keep the keys in my pocket from here on in." Just once I would have liked to see Gomer stand up to Sargent Carter with this attitude. Just once! There's the mention of Laura Lee Hobbs.....Wilton Blair (died in 1960).....and who were those two "brilliant barrister" that were selling aluminum siding and calling baseball games? There's a bunch....but these names are all significant parts of my recollection of TAGS. Why there's Viola McConopher...Sueler Sawee......Pete Fletcher.....Willy Jack.......The Milo Boys........Al Becker......Carl Benson and His Original Wildcats....Ramona Wiley (any kin to Mrs. Wiley???)..Harry Bektoris.....Red Aikens.......Jessie Pearson (the soul of honesty!) and of course Merle Dean.... There's many many more.....but sometimes I just sit and laugh when I think of the episodes involving the mere mention of these animated folks! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 11:03:36 EDT From: "Maureen Kowalski" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: this 'n' 'at Helloo Dolllll, Regarding Skippy's mention of Cousin Virgil in Bonnie and Clyde, I thought that was him but I wasn't sure. I remember him best from an old Disney Movie called Summer Magic with Hayley Mills , post Parent Trap era and Burl Ives. Talk about a decent clean cut movie with a plot, this one has to take the cake and is one of my favorites. Last night I was watching Runaway Bride with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, and when Gere's character comes from NYC to the small town where Julia Roberts character lives, the first words out of his mouth are,"Shazam, I'm in Mayberry". His character also goes on in a couple of other sarcastic moments whistling the TAGS theme to Roberts and she tells him, "what, you don't think I know what you're getting at", and refers to the bridal gown shopkeeper as Aunt Bee. I wanted to pop him one through the TV for those negative TAGS references, but in the end he comes to like the small town and its people. As for African American characters on TAGS, I don't remember any on TAGS, but I do recall Sam on Mayberry RFD being friends with an African American farmer who was his neighbor or at least lived in the same direction as him. Hello all, in response to joe nasty: I was surprised myself when I watched one of the newer episodes, and discovered that Opie's football coach was a black man. His name was Flip Conroy, and he stated that he had come back to Mayberry to run his father's business there. So, perhaps they had always been in town, just never got to see them. As the episodes progressed, I've seen more as "extras" walking behind the scenes. Floyd the pug says "woof" hey to you and yours.....Sheridan L. Well, in the "Mayberry of the Midwest" (Clay City, Indiana) when I was growing up, we had a town character. He wasn't mischievous like Ernest T, just kind of simple. If I remember correctly, he lived in back of one of the Main Street stores. His only transportation was a bicycle with streamers on the handlebars, and he seemed to spend most of his days riding around town. As he got older, he started wearing pantyhose, even under his shorts during the summer. He claimed they helped keep his legs warm. Everybody knew him and was aware of his eccentricities, but accepted him as he was. I didn't really know him personally. I don't think he had much family, so I think the whole town was sort of his family. He died a number of years ago, but folks still remember him with amusement and fondness. I live in a small town northeast of Knoxville TN. We had out own version of Ernest T. I won't tell his real name, but he was a few hairs short of a toupee. He wore his jeans pulled up VERY high so his nickname was "highpockets". He wasn't allowed to drive a car, so he drove a 1950 Ford Jubilee tractor everywhere he went. He was quite a character, and he couldn't have survived anywhere but in a small town. In a big city, he'd have been eaten alive! ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V2 #287 ***************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
