ARE YOU RELATED TO ACTRESS SANDRA BULLOCK? A: Sadly, No. Kissing cousins would have been nice. Q: WERE THERE ANY FAMOUS PEOPLE IN YOUR FAMILY? A.:My branch of the Bullock family lived in North Carolina and Maryland, where they are traceable back to the Revolutionary war. A cousin of mine made a lifetime hobby out of researching the Bullock genealogy...and the only real "Personage" of the slightest importance she discovered in our family the last 200 years was a Charles Bullock who in 1824 opened a tavern...and IN HIS OWN HOUSE! You can't get any more famous than that. Q.DID YOU KEEP COPIES OF TAGS SCRIPTS YOU WROTE? A:Yes, I had them bound into books, about five episodes in each of six volumes. I still leaf through them, and would you believe, I am such a compulsive re-writer I find myself mentally "improving" lines...in forty year old stories! I had always found it difficult to stop "tweaking" a script. My beloved partner, Ray Allen, would literally pull final pages out of my typewriter calling out "NEXT!" Q. DID YOU SEE CAST MEMBERS SOCIALLY WHEN YOU WORKED ON TAGS? A. No, not many. Al Melvin was/is a particularly close friend, we shared a radio-controlled glider we would "Fly" off the bluffs above the ocean here in South Laguna. And we each had an old Model A Ford to tool about. He's a most affable character. Aaron Ruben would occasionally visit us in our home in Tarzana, and we saw a lot of Bernard Fox. We met him when we were working in London; Ray Allen encouraged the multitalented performer to come to the USA...and his pretty American wife did too.They bought a house not far from mine, and Bernie, a great handyman, helped me build a tree-house for my four children...and his two pretty daughters. Watching his career blossom has been a rare treat. Q. WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPT? A. Hard to tell, since I haven't stopped re-writing them! Several are important to me for different reasons. Understandably, the first story I sold to TAGS (Opie's Hobo Friend) will always be very memorable That show changed my life and career..and if my first work hadn't worked...ah, too bleak a prospect. But it played well, and I was welcomed into TAGS with warmth. If I may list others, OPIE THE BIRDMAN, THE BEDJACKET, MR. MCBEEVEE, GOLLEEE, I THINK I LIKED THEM ALL! Seems like at the end, when Gavin MacLeod reminds Andy that he doesn't carry a gun, Andy says thats true for him, but not his deputies who were out in the car with shotguns aimed at the bank. I believe that those two "deputies" were Floyd and Gomer. On a related note, I find it interesting that Gavin MacLeod plays a bank robber posing as a TV producer in "TV or Not TV", then appears again in Episode 167 - "Taylors in Hollywood", this time he is the actor slated to play Andy's part in the production "The Sheriff Without a Gun". Like Ernest T., the Darlings, the Fun Girls, Charlie O'Malley, Mr. Foley, the mayors, Mrs. Mendlebright, Malcolm, Barn's cousin, MaryGrace and so on. And I always think of Howard as being there the whole time and he didn't appear until the colour episodes. I guess everyone who ever visited Mayberry is etched in our hearts forever! Gomer was first seen in episode 76, "The Bank Job." His first episode was NOT Man in a Hurry as most sources suggest (true, that one was filmed first, but "The Bank Job" aired before it).
