Does anyone have any updates on the 40th anniversary show in
Birmingham, AL on Oct 7? The event is less than 3 weeks away, and
I have not seen/heard any news since the original announcement. I
keep checking the websites, but have not found anything new.

Otis said "Scoal" as in the toast. As the mayor was drinking moonshine.
He had already said "Cheers" when Barney was drinking it.

It was "skoal", a toast that means "to your health."

I think the show was created for Andy, like so many other shows have been
created around the personalities of standup comedians ("The Cosby Show",
"Everybody Loves Raymond," etc.). The story has it that Don Knotts called
Andy and asked if he needed a deputy, after seeing the Danny Thomas pilot.
So both parts were tailor made (no pun intended) for the two, and I'm sure
they brought a lot of their own creativity on top of that.

Both parts were created specifically with Andy Griffith and Don Knotts in
mind, therefore no other actors were ever considered.

Andy Griffith had earned a measure of fame playing Will Stockdale in "No
Time for Sergeants" (Don Knotts also appeared in the play -- this is where
he and Andy first met). Sheldon Leonard saw the show on Broadway and liked
Andy, and came up with the idea of creating a new TV show specifically for
him. There was no deputy in the pilot episode, but when Don Knotts saw it
on TV in February of 1960, he called up Andy and asked, "Don't you need a
deputy?" Andy thought it was a good idea, and suggested that Don should
call Sheldon Leonard. The rest is history!

Howdee y'all,

I had the misfortune to miss all but the last 2 minutes of the MSNBC "Time
and Again" episode that was about TAGS and was wondering if anyone could
help me out with a copy? I would be happy to pay for all expenses for
copying and mailing, and I have two VCRs so if you can't make a copy
yourself you could send me your copy and I'd guard it just like it was a
gold truck and make a copy and get your original back in the mail ASAP.
I've checked out the MSNBC web site and it doesn't look like they're going
to run it again or make copies available. Drop me a line at
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" if you can help me out - THANKS!

Hey, Bec! It's nice to see another Texan join us in posting to the Digest.
Otis is sayin' "Skoal" to Mayor Stoner as he takes a drink. That word is
used as a drinking toast, like "Cheers", and comes from the Danish and
Norwegian "skaal", which means 'cup'.

I'm afraid you've got it backwards, Kent. You were right when you said
that Gomer and Goober appeared in only one episode together ("Fun Girls"),
but the one who appeared in "TV or Not TV" was Goober, not Gomer. This was
the episode in which Goober was introduced as Goober Beasley.

I believe the expression is used to denote joining another person in a
drink, much like the expression cheers is used. It sounds like it may
have originated in the Scandinavian countries, possibly Sweden & is one
I've heard used before, probably in some old movie.
It is interesting to hear our younger generation asking about
expressions like bread & butter. i grew up saying that one.
I love hearing from Harvey Bullock. He gives us a lot of wondeful inside
knowledge about the show, How neat to have him a part of our group.

favorites), mayor stoner says, when the governor gets here, i hope they'll at
least have the decency to come by. then otis says something like, scoe. what
do you think it was? i guess i must have a hole in my thinkin bucket. this

What do you think it means?>>

Think you are referring to the scene where Mayor Stoner gets gassed after
drinking from the water cooler, where Otis had just emptied his hooch. Just
before the mayor raises a cup to his lips, Otis remarked: "Bottoms Up" and
later, "Skoll" - as Stoner goes for another drink. Believe it's a drinking
word (possibly Scandinavian in origin) meaning something akin to: "To your
health".

<<Does anyone know how Andy and Barney were casted for TAGS? Was anyone else

>From what I've read and heard, Barney was never cast as the deputy for TAGS.
The show never even planned on having one. Don Knotts had just left Steve
Allen's 'Tonight Show' and happened to be looking for a job at the time. He'd
called up his old friend Andy Griffith asking if they could use a deputy for
the show. Andy used his influence to get the green light from Sheldon Leonard
and the producers, and thus the character of Barney Fife was born.

It was "skoal". It's a toast. It's actually a Danish word; it comes from
the Old Norse, skl, which meant "drinking vessel". Apparently those folks
didn't have to have anything important to drink to. If nothing else, they'd
toast the glass that held the drink. Hence the toast, "Skoal!". If the
mayor would have condescended to listen to old Otis, he might have been
sober enough to impress the governor. But he just kept drinkin' and
talkin', drinkin' and talkin'. Ain't that just like a politician?

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder where the body's immune system
attacks its own nervous system. The first symptoms are weakness
or tingling sensations in the legs - many times this spreads to the arms.
In really serious cases, this can lead to total paralysis of the patient and
can be life-threatening.

The good news is that most people recover with treatment.

I hope this helps,

Otis says "skoal" to Mayor Stoner, because he is drinking from the
spiked water crock. Skoal is a
term similar to "cheers" or "bottoms up"; a toast, in other words.
