Nine of us from our chapter traveled to the wonderful town of Mt. Airy and spent 2 marvelous days re-living Mayberry. From the wonderful David Browning and the way he has captured the character of Barney Fife to the incredible job done by Brack Lwelynn and the cast in Col. Tim's Talent Time.......we thank you for all the time and effort you give. For those that were there, Maggie Peterson just touched everyones heart at Col. Tim's with her tribute to Denver Pyle and others in the cast of TAGS who have passed on.............what an OUTSTANDING WEEKEND....THANK YOU SURRY ARTS COUNCIL FOR MAYBERRY DAYS.........Dave & Pattie and A Dollar and a Quarter Club, New Phila, Ohio. P.S.......if you haven't seen Jim Clark and Ken Becks newest book out you haven't seen anything......JUST OUTSTANDING!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 23:28:54 -0500 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge >>>On a lighter note, I always assumed it took so long to get to the Darlin's because of the rough terrain, and I wondered too how they got the car to the Darlin's front door? "Luck t' you 'n yers!!" Connie >>> Let's approach this scientifically (this is quite lengthy, so just skip down past it if you don't want to read all of it). We know from "Opie's Charity" that Mayberry County covers roughly 267 square miles (400 needy boys divided by 1.5 boys per square mile). We also know from the map in the courthouse that Mayberry County is rectangular, therefore the dimensions must be about 15 miles by 18 miles (15 x 18 = 270). Applying the Pythagorean theorem, an imaginary line drawn from one corner of the county to the diagonally opposite corner would be approximately 23.4 miles long. We know that the Darlings' cabin must be located in Mayberry County, or else Andy would have been out of his jurisdiction in going there. Following the above line of reasoning, it is clear that no matter where the cabin is, the Mayberry courthouse cannot possibly be more than 23.4 miles away from it. It's safe to assume that the town of Mayberry is roughly in the center of Mayberry County, so theoretically the Mayberry Courthouse would have been no more than 12 miles from any other point in the county. We also know from "The Manhunt" and "Otis the Deputy" that Andy is very familiar with the back roads of Mayberry County, even the ones that aren't on the map, and since Briscoe didn't give him any directions, Andy obviously knew how to get there. Here's where it starts to get complicated: On the day Andy and Barney went to the Darlings' cabin, they left the courthouse at 4:00 a.m. When they arrived and got out of the squad car, their shadows were almost non-existent, so it must have been very close to 12:00 noon (the small shadows indicate that the sun was directly overheard. We could get into trigonometry -- only let's not do it right now). From this, we can conclude that even though it was only about 12 miles from the courthouse to the cabin, it took them EIGHT HOURS to get there! I've got a 1963 Ford like the one they drove in that episode. It barely gets 14 mpg on the highway, so there's no way they could have driven non-stop for eight hours without refeuling. We also know that the Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge (an oak tree that fell across a shallow spot in the creek) is basically just a footbridge, so of course it would be impossible to drive across it. So, why did it take eight hours? I've got a thought. I've got more than a thought, I've got a theory. Wanna hear my theory? It's pretty. Here's what must have happened: Andy knew they wouldn't be able to cross the Robert E. Lee Natural Bridge in the squad car, so he asked Goober to follow them in his pickup truck. When they got to the bridge, Goober took the squad car apart piece by piece and reassembled it on the opposite bank (a bee-YOO-tiful thing to watch). This must have taken him about seven and a half hours. Now, I know it didn't take Goober that long to disassemble and reassemble an automobile in "Goober Takes a Car Apart," but remember in this instance he had to carry all of the pieces across the footbridge, which was no doubt a treacherous and time-consuming undertaking. After Goober had finally finished, he drove his truck back to town and Andy and Barney continued on up to the cabin. It would have been quite an imposition to ask Goober to perform this task twice in one day; this is why Andy and Barney decided to spend the night with the Darlings (Heaven knows it wasn't the hog backbone or fish muddle that convinced them to stay overnight). This explanation fits all the facts as we know them. Just don't ask me how the Darlings got to town in their truck! - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 12:46:01 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: A new citizen in Mayberry My daughter gave birth to our first grandchild on Thursday, Sept. 28, little Isabella Clare. Airy, NC I had a WONDERFUL time. I met Alan Newsome/aka/Floyd the barber, Maggie Petersen/aka/Charlene Darling and Doug Dillard from the Darling boys band. I was absolutely thrilled to be able to attend, it was a birthday present from my family. Everyone there was very accomodating to all of us "foreigners" from out of town. We sat and had a coke at the counter of one of the cafe's, and met a charming local man by the name of Grady, who shared memories of growing up with Andy Griffith. I was able to tour Andy's homeplace and visit with so many TAGSRWC members. We shared favorite episodes with each other and really had a great time. I don't remember when I have enjoyed a weekend better. If you ever get a chance to attend you will never forget it. I also met Mr. Hiatt who is the character that Floyd the barber is based on, he was an extremely charming man. Lots of Luck to You and Yours!! I love a show that can make me laugh, make me cry and leave me a better person than I was before I turned it on. Happy crying! "Opie, stop picking the horse hairs out of that suit!" Hal "Otis" Smith is a king of cartoon voices, WOW. It's BIG, REALLY BIG. Also visited Victorville, Ca., this weekend, there's a new housing community in their area called Mayberry, the floor plans are named The Taylors etc., just as BIG, you can obtain information about it by loging on at Pacific Century Homes if interested you can contact them via e-mail and they will send information and brochures.
