Gertrude, and she wasn't worth a dollar and a quarter! If she was used in
the Jinx, she had to have had her whole fixed. And if she didn't have it
fixed, then whose boat did Andy and Hellen use when they had "their" day? Or
all those OTHER times that Andy and Opie fished, don't forget blood
brothers.

Harriet, buckets galore............

>>>Paul,
...I just wanted to know if you could talk a little bit about how you know
everything!! Is it just years and years of research or is there something
in addtion?
>>>

I've seen every episode probably 50 times (the black and white ones, at
least) and I read every TAGS book, newsletter, or article I come across. I
am a homemaker, so I can usually find a couple of hours every day to watch
TAGS tapes. I've also had the good fortune to meet almost all of the
surviving cast members and had the opportunities to ask them questions about
the show. Outside of that, I guess I just have a good memory for trivia.
Strange as it may seem, I have a terrible time remembering the names of
people I meet, but I can recall just about anything from TAGS.

>>>Also, I saw your name at the begining of the Mayberry Memories book (what
a book it is!) for your input and just wondered if you have any plans of
writing a book of your own.
>>>

I was working on a book three or four years ago, but I never could interest
a publisher. One of these days, I'll get back to work on it, but for now
it's on the back burner.

Hi Folks,

I heard on the radio today that Ed Asner has contributed to a candidate's
campaign by recording a telephone message which is being "sent" to voters
over the telephone, sort of like telemarketing. I was just wondering if any
of you who live in North Carolina might have received any recorded telephone
messages from Andy Griffith. He has backed candidates in this way in the
past.

PLEASE, let's NOT discuss political candidates or parties here, this is not
the place for that. I just wondered if Andy Griffith was doing this for
this year's election. I know I'd be thrilled to get ANY telephone call from
Andy, even if it was just a recording.

P.S. How I VOTE, brother, is MY business! When a man walks into that
booth, he's alone with his conscience, and NOBODY gets to ask him how he
voted. --B. Fife

I was sittin' here today with this big pile of work, and my darling wife
called to tell me she had a brand new problem for me.
The sink was clogged and she was leaving to go shopping. Realizing that we
are masters of our own homes, I refused to call a plumber and drew a quick
plan in my head for the hairy situation. I had to give it an earnest try
myself. As I turned on the disposal and jimmied it, it made a loud
"schwamp" sound and the remains of Campbell's Soup and olives splattered out
all over me and the kitchen. My daughter came in after playing frisbee,
"This can't be! she said "Mom's gonna declare a disaster area. She'll flip
when she sees this". Are there any laws on the books for husband-beating, I
asked. "To be frank, no" she said. "Is-'ere a way to clean this awful
mess, you Goober?" I wanted to stone 'er I was so mad, but I decided to
walk 'er to 'er bedroom and tuck 'er in bed instead so she wouldn't snitch
on me. This wily old home-owner was not givin' up. I'd been through my low
points before, and got out of harms way, and I had another ace up my sleeve.
I took the trap off the drain and then took a metal slat from my barn, and
bent it. I tried to weave 'er through the open end of the pipe. Viola!,
My tailor-made tool worked. I wouldn't have to be sharin' the blame for
this after all. I piked my bushy eyebrows and thought "I'm no dud, after
all".

24/Oct/2-K

In response to queries and comments by [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] of 10-24-MM:

Yes, The Amos & Andy Television Show was bright and very funny.
Theoretically, it could be considered a Black version of TAGS with Andy
(Andrew J. Brown) being Barney to the Kingfish's (George Stevens') Andy
Taylor or vice versa. However, to reiterate my comment of 10-22-2K (Re: to
V-2 #352);

... "From my memory of either a magazine or television interview with Andy
some 12-15 years ago, Andy, when asked about the lack of Blacks in character
roles on TAGS, said that, [*] 'there were no Black characters in the
show simply because of the realities of the socio-political climate during
the time that the show was in production; and that, while the omission was a
conscious one on the part of the producers and writers, it was done to avoid
public controversy but not to be malicious nor to malign'. [ *undocumented
paraphrased summary from my personal memory]

{additionally, I believe that a couple of episodes of TAGS were written by
Freeman Gosden and/or Charles Correll, who wrote most episodes of Amos & Andy}

The protests and product sponsorship boycotts that were promulgated by the
N.A.A.C. P. against the broadcasting of The A&A Show at the time reflect, at
least in part, some reasons why there were no Black People cast in character
roles on TAGS. I, who am a Black American, also cherish the great comedy of
the Amos & Andy program and having been able to see other people who looked
like ME on national television then, which, in and of itself, was an anomaly
during that period of racial contentiousness and strife.

However, now that our national posture with/for/of/about race has changed [at
least on the surface], I find NO difference in the presentations broadcast by
the media today (in their efforts to assuage the entertainment tastes of
Black Americans) than the comedic images and fodder of radio & television of
the 40's, 50's & 60's. At least, even then, there were some TV exec's who
dared to even allow Blacks to appear on television (The Amos & Andy Show of
Radio featured Caucasian actors in 'Black Voice'). Remember the
controversies about Nat "King" Cole having and hosting his own TV show(s)? Or
the "The kiss that sucked around the world" between Sammy Davis, Jr. and
Raquel Welch on national television? It seems that entertainment along with
other elements and societal issues are relative to the sociology and politics
and bigotry of a culture (the inquisitions, the witch hunts, etc.) AT THEIR
TIME in history.

At any rate, keeping in mind that what WAS yesterday helped us to get to what
IS today - and we're moving beyond this, even... even though true utopia
isn't possible in reality - But progress is just THAT; even with it's
attendant qualifiers.

My wholesale apology for using this forum as a soapbox but I couldn't resist
the opportunity to grandstand on or for this reality check. Webmaster, please
feel free to edit or delete these my comments as you deem fit for this - your
and the participants' forum ... but, I believe that Andy & Barney would both
agree that this is perfect time at this place on the hill to 'Nip Speeders In
The Bud'. (If you give 'em 35 they'll take 40, ad infinitum, etc.)

Videos of the Amos & Andy Show can be purchased from a company called:

Or one can peruse their catalogues and titles of old radio and tv programs
that they sell online at:

P. S. to RedRuby Star: Ruby Begonia was the name of a (Cleroy) Flip Wilson
sketch character from his television show and vinyl comedy album, "The Devil
Made Me Buy This Dress" [BMI, {Little David Records - 200 West 57th St. NYC
10019}. From a Fiip Wilson comedic take-off of the fairy tale, Rapunzel.
[ { ...DO RUBY BEGONIA RING A BELL!?!... }. Or go to iWon.com and enter "Flip
Wilson" or "Cleroy" in the search box for additional references. ]

And, the wife of Kingfish was named Sapphire...

"A-ah-ah-A-ah A-N-D-Y!!?! What Is I Gonna D-O-O??!?!?"

"Kingfish, you is dumber than you looks 'cause you thinks that you is smarter
than everybody. But I is here to tell ya that you ain't smarter than
nobody..."

I don't remember them calling the name of the boat on The Jinx episode, but
I do know in the Manhunt episode it was called Gertrude.

You know, right now I wouldn't take a dollar and a qwarter for that hole!

Howdy to you and yours!

It is worth repeating.....
TAGS regularly featured African Americans in their
crowd scenes (which I always appreciated, being Black
myself!) and was one of the first shows to do this!
And I'm waiting for the "all Andy Channel"!

I haven't said this before: Thank you Allan for this
site!
