We've discussed this before, but Andy and Barney are all the time talking
about going up to Mt. Pilot. Now, Mayberry was named after Mt. Airy. That's
at the northern part of the state and Pilot Mountain (Mt. Pilot) is east of
there. John Masters said he had a pretty good reputation in the northern part
of the state. So I'll ask again...Where is Mayberry?? I'm so upset! Nora
forgot to pack my goosedown pillow!!

I've recently noticed a different calendar photograph
which appears to show Jim Lindsey (sp?) and his
guitar, and I believe it can be seen over Andy's
shoulder when he sits next to Lindsey's cell in the
episode which premiered his character.

My family and I went on opening night to see The Grinch, by Ron Howard. Ope
did a right nice job on that film. He stayed true to the Geisel book, and
the cartoon in many ways, but also injected some nice new ideas/ scenes.
Good ole Clint was there, (as many of you responded to my question that he
would be). He is like the deputy mayor of Whoville....but I didn't know to
look for Rance (Ron's father) as I did not know that until afterwards that
he was in it. There is a nice dedication line to Ron's mother in the
beginning of the credits. It's a pretty clean family film, worth the
ticket.

This weekend is the Gomer Pyle Marathon on TVland. Its great to see so many
TAGS alums in the Gomer shows. I just noticed for the first time that
Gomer's "society girl" date was none other than Maggie Peterson (Charlene
Darling). Don't get jealous now Miss Poovey, this was a blind date. There
are many more. Its great to see Allen Melvin is practically every episode
and Sgt. Hacker

It was great to see the words to that song. "What ever Happened to Mayberry"
I have a related request. At the Pigeon Forge event this year, Rodney
Dillard sang a song in which the main refrain was "I wish life was like the
Andy Griffith Show" Does anyone have the word to that? and is in on one of
the Dillards CDs?

Another Story on the way....Due to the kind words of a few on you on my
previous "Lost Episodes" posted on the TAGSRWC website under Fan Fiction, I
have begun a new episode/story. Like a couple of those stories, this fills
a perceived void (in my opinion) that was never shown on TAGS. Stay tuned
for more details, hope to have it out by Christmas

Subject: name change info for Theresa

In the Digest of 16 November Theresa West quotes a line in the "PAGEANT"
episode wherein Barney says that Clara Edwards won't be available to portray
her usual starring role in the annual upcoming town pageant because she has
to go to Saberton to attend her sick sister.
Thersa asks if I wrote that little factoid in the script knowing that
Saberton is a "suburb" of Morgantown W.V., Don Knott's home town.
Or was it just a coincidence?
I checked my script copy. On page 12 Barney says "Her sister took sick over
in Mebane."
Mebane?...Saberton?...Could she have been stricken in a mobile hospital?
My creaky memory came briefly to life and I remember writing "Mebane." It was
a small town in North Carolina which had popped into my mind because it was
the home town of Rusty, a classmate who roomed across the hall from me during
my freshman year (Fall,1939) at Duke University and unceasingly described it
as the fried chicken capital of the known universe.
So how did the name become Saperton. I reckon there was a little friendly
change made on the set and Saberton beat out Mebane, chicken wings and all.
Writers often used name of real people and places familiar to them. It was
fast, convenient and kind of fun.
The legal department would in turn charge the name again if they thought it
was so unque that it could refer to only one person who might then declare an
invasion of privacy or habeas corpus or whatever.
For a short while, writer Jack Elinson and I maintained an underground
defamation
duel (not on TAGS). I would use Jack's name when a despicable rogue showed up
in my script, and he would counter using my name on an equally dastardly
wretch in his. On "One Day at a Time" Jack had Bonny Franklin make a list of
the most boring dates she ever had. Guess whose name led all.
What the heck, it was a break from staring at the ceiling in search of the
ever-elusive story bug. Best to all Harvey Bullock
