Subject: A Harvey Question

I caught an episode of Gomer Pyle the other day where Sgt Carter was going
to take a headquarters job because he didn't think his platoon needed him
any more. The plot was suspiciously like the one where Aunt Bee goes on a
trip leaving the boys to batch it. Toward the end, Andy realizes that Aunt
Bee will be hurt when she realizes that they can get by without her. Andy
and Opie then go through the house messing it up just before Aunt Bee comes
home. Gomer does the same thing with the barracks. Harvey Bullock wrote
the Gomer episode and I haven't checked to see if he wrote the TAGS episode
or not. But I did wonder if Harvey was pulling ideas from his TAGS days or
possibly Aaron Ruben asked for a similar story line.

Subject: Hidden Theology in Mayberry

There are some hidden meanings in Mayberry.

For intstance; There is one episode in which Otis is
recovering from the night before and Andy mixes him up a
Virgin Mary (Bloody Mary minus the alcohol) with an egg in
it. Remember?

While he's waiting Otis says, "Shubum, Shubum,Shubum". Andy
asks what that means and Otis replies, "That's how my mouth
feels."

Actually what Otis was saying was a Hebrew word that means,
"Repent". As though Otis was repenting for his behavior
the night before. Several of the writers/directors on
Mayberry were Jewish (Sheldon Leonard for one) so this is
no surprise but is a little known Mayberry "factoid".

As Gomer would say, "Makes ya think!"

peace,

Rev. Joe

Last night I saw "The Arrest of the Fun Girls" for the first time. My wife
almost fell out of her chair onto the floor when she found out there was an
episode I'd never seen. Well anyway, the ep to me just didn't seem to have
that "something" that all my other favorite episodes seem to have. That
being neither here nor there, I noticed that we got a little glimpse of the
Andy of the future there (the character, not necessarily the show). I
almost ran up to the TV screen and adjusted the color, 'cause I thought mine
had gone out; I thought he was the "Color Episodes Andy." I'm not sure if
he did the Color Episodes Andy head jerk or not, but he (Color Episodes
Andy)was definitely sneaking our way.
Well, I'll see you,
Jason at the Hotel

Did I miss a posting or something? A friend just sent me a page from People
magazine all about Joey Fann and the TAGS Bible Study. I don't remember
seeing anything in the Digest about that.
