Has anyone seen the episode of M*A*S*H with Ron Howard
in it? He plays a young man who lied and used his
older brothers birth certificate in order to join up.
He was trying to prove something to a young lady back
home, he is exposed as an imposter and sent home. He
plays an angry young man but is very good in the part.
I was pleasantly surprised the first time I saw this
episode years ago at it's first airing. Everybody on
the truck!!!!! Merry Christmas, Anita

TAGS fans,

It's always fun to catch TAGS actors in other environments, but one of
the TAGS actors has proven inadvertantly that Hollywood goes for glamor
rather than accuracy. As a born and raised Texan, I have made several
pilgrimages to the Alamo in San Antonio. There, hanging on the wall, one
will find a portrait of Davy Crockett painted by someone who actually knew
what he looked like. With apologies to John Wayne, Fess Parker and half a
dozen other actors, one realizes while looking at that painting that the
actor who should have been allowed to portay Davy is George Lindsey.
George is a great actor, so it's unfortunate that he may have been
type-cast away from roles like that.

Sam

P.S. I wonder if Davy wore his bucksin pants pulled up to his chest?

I know Allan has said discussing our SECOND favorite show here in the digest
in a no-no, so I wasn't going to write in and say how much I also injoyed
The Dyke Van Dyke show. But I've noticed alot of other folks mention that
show and I can't help think that the two shows actually have alot in common.
Like none of the humor is mean spirited. I see so many shows that rely on
put-downs. Characters making fun of each other and stuff. The closest thing
we get to this on Tags is when Andy "picks" on Barney, but it always seems
more good natured. As we say around here, The Andy Griffith Show is "warm
hearted", and so is, I believe, the Van Dyke show. Also, both shows seem to
be kind of timeless. Most of the humor does not seem "dated".

So, can anyone think of any other ways in which the two shows are alike?

Sincerly,

Kail "Hoping Allan thinks this is on topic" Tescar

Frances Bavier was a regular on "It's a Good Life" and "The Eve Arden Show",
two shortlived 1950s sitcoms before TAGS...and of course "Mayberry RFD"
afterward. She also made numerous guest appearances, including "The Lone
Ranger", "Sugarfoot" (where I believe she played Annie Oakley!), and "Perry
Mason".

As far as movies, Frances is best remembered for two: "The Day the Earth Stood
Still" and her last acting appearance, 1974's "Benji".

Subject: Barney as Santa...

Hey there, everyone!

I've been trying to find a picture of Barney dressed up as Santa to use as
wallpaper on my computer. Does anyone know of a website that would have a
good-sized picture of this? I've looked around mayberry.com some, as well
as a few other websites, but at the rate I'm going, it'll be next Christmas
before I find one! :-) I've found a couple of small pictures (and could
probably put them together into one .bmp), but would like to find a larger
one to fit the screen better. Thanks in advance for any help!

about both shows, it has struck me that James Garner and Andy Griffith
share some traits. They are both very giving people, especially to their
friends and co-stars. And people who have worked with them look back on
that as one of the best times of their lives.>>

If I'm not mistaken, I think Garner and Griffith were both inducted into the
Television Hall of Fame the same year. I remember seeing montages in their
honor on the Emmy Awards that year...

Ol' Goob wasn't the only Mayberry alumnus to make it through the 4077th. Ron
Howard played a wounded soldier in a memorable episode, and Clara Edwards
herself, Hope Summers, played a sassy nurse who testified on Colonel Blake's
behalf at a court martial hearing.

Of course, there were two M*A*S*H regulars who popped up in Mayberry: William
Christopher as an IRS agent and Jamie Farr as a gypsy.

several folks gave a report on the Mayberry Reunion in Danville last

Hello from Cheryl in Opelika, AL

Thanks to the members who emailed me privately, it was great to hear from
you. Several of you echoed my sentiments about Peggy. I think she had the
greatest voice and was more "Southern" than Helen.

I do not want to stray from TAGS too far and tick off the webmaster, <g> but
I wish someone would show the old 1960s westerns: Rawhide, Cheyenne,
Sugarfoot, Laramie, etc. Those were really great shows.

I guess my second favorite show would be Dick Van Dyke. I have a set of
canisters on my kitchen counter just like Laura has. They were given to me
by my husband's Mom. (I hate the term mother-in-law!) They are about 40
years old and made of copper.

TV Land has been showing COLOR TAGS lately, and I hate it. To make matters
worse, they have WARREN in them. I HATE WARREN!!! I want to punch his
lights out everytime he starts with Yeah, huh, yeah huh. I read that he
did not fit in with the cast at all, and that is why he was on the show such
a short time. Thank goodness!

Bye for now,

Cheryl

Needless to say, this breaks Rule #2 all to pieces. Remember

Rule #1. Obey all rules.
Rule #2. Don't talk about things you DON'T like about Mayberry and the
folks that live there. There should be plenty of things that you DO like that
folks can talk about. Keep things positive and folks will enjoy themselves
much more.

Ron Howard was a character in an episode of the Waltons where he was a friend
of Jason and he had leukemia (sp?)....they both liked music and Ron's
character made a wood flute for Jason before he died....I remember one scene
where he (Ron's character) got upset and ran off into the woods. When he
stopped he was by a lake, and, lo and behold, a closer look revealed that it
was Myers Lake!!!!! If you look closely on the Waltons (among many other
shows) you can see some familiar scenes from TAGS...........

You're right, I saw her once and wow, was I surprised. Surely she must have
been in other things, too. She was "Aunt Bee" in this, too. Hey, my
daughter just got a part in her high school play - this will be her 4th part
in her school year - she wants to be an actress - wish Aunt Bee or Helen
were around to give her some advice. :)

I never tried to enter a barber shop, but I know "girls" also didn't go into
"pool halls." Also, I grew up in Illinois, where it was really hot and
humid in the summers, so I would wear "shorts" around town. Some of the
girls a few years older than I were scandalized, and I was mortified.
'Course, I didn't stop wearing the shorts, oh, well...at least I never wore
white after Labor Day - a person has to have standards! :)

I did come across one of these thermometers about a
month ago, and
I
was able to determine what product was advertised.
Anybody want to take a
guess?
That has to be "Mail Pouch", I think the same ad
appeared on some barns around here, years ago.

If you also look closely in the same movie, you'll find two other TAGS cast
members - our own John Masters (Olan Soule) and our folk song record maker -
you know, the guy who sold the Mayberry tapes to the National Record
Company. (Sorry, forgot his real and screen names.)
