Subject: The WBMUTBB Rules
I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately that it's time
to restate "The Rules" for everybody. You old-timers might want to read
through this just to refresh your memories and I think it's good for all of
us to try and remember these tried and true rules.---- Allan
*******************************
Hey Everybody,
Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:
We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than
that, they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit
them every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting
locked in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on our faces.
Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.
I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible. I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget
about the outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt
Bee, and the rest of our Mayberry family.
To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?
I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.
Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.
Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.
I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an
example. Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look
how stupid he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that
(and meant it) what are the first things that happen to you?
First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset
about this guy talking about your neighbor.
I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular character doesn't mean that character isn't someone elses
favorite. You see, if I talk about your favorite character saying negative
things about 'em it takes your fun away.
I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you all to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.
We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.
Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.
Your Friend and neighbor,
Allan Newsome

Subject: Snuff pondering
There sure has been a lot of discussion lately about snuff. Reminds me of a
rhyme "we" said when I was in school - A Longfellow rendering no doubt: "I
don't smoke, dip, or chew, and I don't go with boys who do". Put it to
music and you've got a tear jerker. Does anyone know where the term "Up to
Snuff" originated?

Last night on TV Land they reran the classic episode in which Opie and his
friend play the trick on Goober, making him think the dog talks to him.
Anyway, the Mail Pouch thermometer shows up especially well in this one...in
fact, with the digitally remastering, you can actually read "Mail Pouch"
through the paintover. Has anyone else noticed any other brand names as
well? At Wally's I have seen Pennzoil, Citgo and Prestone either on cans or
advertising signs at various points...

I can't really say Warren was my favorite, but he made me laugh from the
beginning. Consider the episode where he meets Aunt Bee and Opie outside the
market. He keeps asking Opie questions then talking before Opie can answer.
At first, Opie trys to answer each question then he finally just gives up and
lets Warren talk. It is hilarious!! Also, I like the episode where Andy and
family go to Hollywood. In the first of that one, Warren and Goober are
trying to read Andy's mail by holding it up to the light and Andy walks in
and catches them. Of course, Warren says he is just teaching Goober what NOT
to do!!

Subject: Leon and Warren
Hey everybody. I noticed our own Leon(Clint Howard) in an episode of The
Odd Couple the other day. He looked to be about 10 years old. To double
check myself, I checked the credits at the end of the show to make sure.
Has he ever played in anything on a regular basis? or what other shows has
he appeared in as a child? Also, I'd like to say that while Warren was ok
in TAGS, I always thought that Jerry Van Dyke would have filled the deputy
spot better, he was really funny in the one episode he did do. Just my 2
cents worth. "No thanks Leon"

Subject: about the color episodes...
The color episodes "feel" different because they ARE different ! The house
that we have come to love and KNOW inside and out is different; they actually
MOVED the kitchen back door ! That wonderful front porch used to have steps
on BOTH ends in some of the episodes. Later, only the right hand steps showed
and there were bushes where the "old" steps used to be; The inside of the
living room and dining area looked different; Yes, there WERE changes made
BEFORE color came along, but the biggest ones seemed to be with the color
episodes.
After all, for years we had our "home away from home" (the Taylor house)
memorized;
we could have walked through it during a power outage and not stump a toe on
anything!!!
Then, when color came along, things in our "home" began to SHOW changes (they
showed up more easily, I guess). It is the "changes" that make us feel
differently
about the color TAGS;(Remember the front screen door, and that wonderful,
comforting
familiar squeak it made? Where did IT go?)
I figured it out a while back...after ponderin' about it for a
looooooooooooooooong
time: it was the changes.......

Subject: Love Interests
The Love interest I found the most beleivable was the
pretty blonde nurse - Miss Peggy.
She sang, like Andy. They both loved Opie and she was far
less tempremental than Helen. That is what I did not like
about Helen - she flew off the handle too often and acted
mean too easily. She was definatley NOT one of my favorite
Mayberry characters. I often wonder why Betty Lynn (Thelma
Lou) was not utilized as Andy's girl. Barn, remember,
started off the the likes of "a fine woman" like Miss
Rosemarie. Thelma Lou was a cutey! I don't recall an
episode in which they met. I remember "that's the couch I
was telling you about" and Barn not having enough nerve to
kiss Thelma Lou. But nothing really on how they met.
We all know how Andy and Helen met.
The love interest I found the prettiest is the Nurse who
tried to get Rafe Hollester to take his shot. She was more
Andy's age too. I don't recall her name or the actress who
played her but "nature had spent a WHOLE LOT of time on
her!" (as Andy said to Barbara Eden).
Goober says "hey!",
Rev. Joe

Coleman and myself did for her. Y'all remember the episode were Aunt Bee
wants the blue bed jacket for her birthday, and Andy trades 'Ol Eagle Eye
Annie for it, well we sent Ms. Perry a blue bed jacket and she was
thrilled. I've mailed her all the cards that y'all have sent, but I sure
would like to send her some more!!! I will try and get an updated report
to y'all after her surgery as soon as I can. Thank you Allan for posting
this for me. And folks don't forget our "Little Floyd" Adam has a birthday
