On it he has a song called "Its alright to be a redneck" and in the song there is a line that says " its alright to be a redneck , its alright to have a girl named Thelmalou ." I thought this was a great way for A.J. to have tags in one of his songs .I have heard tags referred to in other country songs also . I may be wrong but I think I read in the Bullet some time back that A.J. was an honorary member of TAGSRWC . Too bad they never cast her - this has been discussed before, but someone suggested that Charlene from Designing Women would have been great for that part - she would have been, but of course, Thelma was made for Barney). BTW, remember the episode on Designing Women where Charlene accused Andy of tricking Opie out of his allowance - do you remember any such episode? Say it isn't so! I spoke with her today and she is doing good, she still isn't able to climb her stairs to get to her computer but she wants me to pass it on to all, "that she is doing well, and can't wait to be invited to another Mayberry event". I was glad to see the notes from other TAGS members regarding Ms. Perry's roles that she played on TAGS. If anyone still wants to send get well wishes to her, I am still mailing her cards & etc. to her when they come in. If anyone wanting to send her anything please mail it to: Kathy Taylor/Barbara Perry.....397 Taylor Rd.......Hartselle, Al. 35640, I know she will appreciate all the support we can give her. While it may be true that the veteran actor who played "Otis" on TAGS was perhaps typecast as a lovable drunk, it seems that we, in our love and affection of his portrayal of that role, continually perpetuate the stereotype. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing that we naively do and have done with our passively critical doubts and cerebral ponderances; but remember that Foster Brooks, another veteran of stage, cinema and television made a name (of sorts) and lots of money, friends and fans in a similar 'typecast' persona {there were and are a lot of character actors whom we strongly identify with whom we know and love to watch but never know who they are: Jack Elam, R. G. Armstrong, Ben Johnson, Wilford Brimley, and who would ever forget Red (Richard) Skelton and his alters of Freddie The Freeloader, Clem Kadiddlehopper, Cauliflower McPugg or Bolivar Shagnasty?, just to name a few of the male character types. {There are many well loved and noted female character actors as well...} I believe that some of us are attempting to moralize too much and/or to denigrate the personality of the character played on the show to satiate our own social and religious consciousness' to the contrast of a fictional character played by a person who, as an actor, in reality is probably much more LIKE US than not. It seems that even in most books and other retrospective works that bestow our adulation and kudos upon TAGS and the actors who made it so real and inviting, "Otis Campbell" is still the Rodney Dangerfield of the show. When other characters are listed or mentioned, their real names are given for our association. But "Otis" is just "Otis" - usually. The actors name is Hal (Harold) Smith; and he does have credits that are "out-of-character". In his early career he played mob-type characters in Edward G. Robinson movies [alongside R. G. Armstrong et. al.], and in later years [as recently as the mid-to-late 1980s] Mr. Smith acted in a series of TV commercials in California as the thrift-wise check-out sacker for the Food Lion Grocery Store Chain ... Remember kids: Don't try this at home! - It's only TV, and if it makes us think then all the better .... But not too much! That's why angels have wings! 'Cause they take themselves lightly!!! Both Gomer and Sgt. Carter bought cheap suits from a fellow selling out of his car (Sid Melton). Sounds an awful lot like the Don Rickles episode on TAGS.
