(AIT)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Pickups and Splashes from Floor and Pool Interesting discussion on Otis. I pulled out a book I have which includes an interview with Hal Smith "The Official Andy Griffith Show Scrapbook", by Pfeiffer. He mentions that he was spotted on Ozzie and Harriet playing a drunk, by Griffith Show casting director Ruth Birch. He doesn't discuss typecasting, but shares an interesting sidelight. "Unfortunately there was an executive at our sponsor --General Mills, who kept trying to get me off the show because he was an alcoholic, and he saw himself whenever he saw me. But Danny Thomas, Sheldon Leonard and Andy Griffith insisted that I stay. They had a lot of guts to fight the sponsor!. Prior to TAGS he appears to have had a variety of roles...and, as has been mentioned, did lots of cartoon voices. I have a TAGS sighting of a most unusual kind. Over the holidays I sat down to watch a movie with my brother. As the Columbia Pictures Logo comes up, there is the usual picture or a statuesque lady. She is holding up something like a torch similar to the statue of Liberty. My brother says "Thelma Lou". I said "what!" and hit the rewind button. Sure enough the Columbia pictures lady looks like our Thelma Lou! Check it out. The Digest sure has been great lately. I enjoy all this discussion about the Extras. I'm fascinated by these unsung heroes also. Two of my mystery ladies are the blond in the Barney and the Choir Episode...and the African American lady in the background when Barney unwitting captures an escapee on the sidewalk while writing him a ticket. There are so many Johnny Coons and Mr. Swamps out there. and thanks for the Barbara Perry answer.. I also wondered if we'd ever find out who she was. ....for my job in Mayberry, I guess I would be editor of the Mayberry Gazette since Andy gave that up after the pilot. I'd get to write about all these wonderful folks for real. I saw an episode of Andy Griffith that I hadn't seen before, it's in color and is when Aunt Bee gets a wig and is wearing makeup--including false eyelashes!! She looked great!! Does anyone know if the made up Aunt Bee is similar to the way Francies Bavier looked in person? I really liked her all dolled up, very pretty woman. It's just that I have just heard that sometimes actors don't like to be "typecast" and I wondered if it had ever bothered Hal. I know he had other parts - wasn't he the voice of Fred Flintstone's pal, "Barney". Coincidence? :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 14:48:13 -0600 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: middle names >>>...isn't Don Knotts' middle name Donald? He really made me laugh.. he's a real gem!!! I also have seen him on Nick at night as Mr. Furley on three's company. He's a "nut"!!! I also have a question for all of you trained noticers....... When did the door in Aunt Bea's kitchen move to the back wall??? Was it when they went to color ?? It troubles me!!! Also..someone asked me the other day if any of Andy Griffeth's kids were still alive and how old they were. I told them I'd consult the pros. Do any of ya'll know? Andy and Aunt Bee sitting on the front porch talking about missing Barney...that scene seemed very real. Didn't someone mention awhile back that that episode was actually the last one in which Barney appeared? I've been enjoying these color episodes - I know that most people don't like them as much as the B&W's but they just seem like an added bonus for us AG fans. - -Charlie _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 22:06:16 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: And's Job >>>Andy is Sheriff of Mayberry County, NC. He is also in charge of the township of Mayberry (since it lies entirely within Mayberry County and has no police force of its own) but his paycheck comes from the county, not the town (see "Aunt Bee the Crusader").<<< Thanks for your response to my question regarding Andy's Job and jurisdiction. I always thought that Andy had countywide jurisdiction since most (if not all) Sheriff's in the U.S. are county employees. Otherwise Andy would have been Police Chief of Mayberry and Barney his trusted Lieutenant. One thing though, being a county employee it always seemed kind of strange that Andy answered to the Mayor of Mayberry and put up with so much from Mayor Stoner. Every time I see the episode in which Mayor Stoner scolds Andy for releasing a prisoner for a few days so he could farm his land, I always wish Andy would have put the Mayor in his place. Of course I'm always gratified when I see the bear do it for Andy. Restaurant owner Charles Dowell and landlord Jack Snow had reached an impasse because the two couldn't agree on a price for Snow to sell the building to Dowell. Downtown Mount Airy Inc., a merchants group that promotes downtown shopping and revitalization, agreed to buy the building. The group will sell the building to another merchant, who will then sell it to Dowell. The Snappy Lunch, known for its pork-chop sandwiches, has been inside the building since 1923. Dowell has rented the building since 1960. The Snappy Lunch was a boyhood haunt of Andy Griffith's and was mentioned on an episode of ``The Andy Griffith Show.'' Harris Greene, a business owner who operates three doors from the Snappy Lunch, instigated the sale to help out ``an old friend,'' he said. Greene will buy the building from Downtown Mount Airy Inc. for $60,000 this month and sell it to Dowell for the same price. ``That's where it belongs,'' Greene said. ``He is Mr. Snappy Lunch. I don't think it would do too well without him.'' ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 19:15:08 -0600 From: "DEBORAH DUBOSE" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Career Changes Now, I'm perfectly happy in my chosen fields of dime store clerking and gold truck receiving, but Don did have an interesting question about which other jobs in Mayberry might interest us. I think Sarah had a really great job. Nothing happened in Mayberry that she wouldn't hear about first. And, man, would I like that! But then, I've always been partial to gossip. It's a sin and I'm not proud about it, but give me a break here. I'm kind to animals. And also, I always worried a little about Sarah. Did she ever get any time off? It never seemed that way. Day or night, every day of the week, good old Sarah was always on call. Granted, she got a few hours break when the Sisters (Maude and Cora with the sleeping feet) visited by phone on Sunday afternoons, but other than that, she was on duty all the time. Bless her heart! So, Don, I'd be Sarah's helper. Give her a couple of days off each week, let Lydia keep the dime store by herself those days, and just feel a whole lot better about the entire situation. What'd you think? And maybe I'd finally find out about my Mystery Lady.
