Like I said on my one and only post, thanks again for posting the rules. I
guess I wrote too soon. Scott Gamel said to read a couple issues before
jumping in. Please accepts my apologies! A newcomer.

...The only time [Don Knotts} is really riding it is when he's chalking the
tires - otherwise it's a double.
>>>

I checked with Don on this a while back and he confirmed that he really did
operate the motorcycle himself. I"m sure they used a double some of the
time, though. With all that getup he wore, it's nearly impossible to tell
them apart.

Many fans may not realize that on most TV shows including TAGS, the major
characters each have a double or a stand-in. The stand-in is another actor
who has the same build as the star and an identical hairstyle and similar
facial features. He wears an exact duplicate of whatever costume the star
is wearing at any given time.

For example, suppose there was a scene with Andy and say, Mr. Foley. The
two men are standing in front of the grocery store, facing each other and
having a conversation that lasts about two minutes. The entire scene would
have to be shot three times: once with the camera on Andy, once with the
camera on Mr. Foley (we see Andy's back in this angle), and once with the
camera positioned in the middle of the street so that both men could be seen
in the shot. Later in the editing room, the three shots will be combined
into one scene.

For this example, let's say each of these three angles took one hour to
shoot. Andy Griffith is the star of the show, so when it came time to shoot
the closeup of Mr. Foley, Andy would not be expected to stand there for an
entire hour doing nothing. This is where the stand-in comes in. Since
Andy's face doesn't show in the shot, from the back it's impossible to tell
the difference. Mr. Foley would say his lines, someone nearby (perhaps the
assistant director) would read Andy's lines, and the editor does the rest.

On page 86 of "The Definitive Andy Griffith Show Reference" there's a photo
that appears to include Don's double. Look at the left side of the shot and
you'll see a man that looks like Barney Fife peering through the bars of the
cell. If you don't have this book -- GET IT!

Dave - don't go kickin' a can on your way out of town just yet. We'd
hate to see you end up in Elm City via that delivery truck with a belly

we did because never in our wildest dreams had anyone ever thought of
seeing rule #2 broken on Aunt Bee. Usually Allan has to whip out his
ticket book for rule #2 on a minor character and we all heed Barney's
notice to "keep it moving, nothing to see here" in that case.

    Hello again my fellow Mayberrians,

I had asked a question concerning Tracy Rupert and who he might have
been or what he may
have done. My initial goal was to stump the likes of a Paul M.
However, it has become clear that
Jeff K. (aka: BigHead in Dee-troit), and Beth P. need to be included
in this quest. My supreme
goal is to find those facts and trivia that most people will
inadvertenly skip right over never giving it
a second thought. I will assure you that this will eventually come
to fruition, so I say to you, Paul M.,
Jeff K., and Beth P., you had better gird your loins buster, because
you are in for a challenge. Remember,
you heard this from Robert (Trivia) Newman. This challenge of
course refers to all my fellow Mayberrians
and I will be looking forward to stumping each and everyone of
you......Ha Ha, I suppose in my heart
of hearts I know this may be an impossible task but I am up for the
challenge. It may take me a day,
a week, or even months but remember...........You all will be
hearing from me.

Everyone complains about the weather but nobody does anything about
it.......
    Did Calvin Coolidge say that????

Someone wrote in to say that if we watched the color episodes we would come to
love them (maybe not a direct quote, but close!). I have to agree to that. I
have seen many of the b&w episodes many many times, but the other channels that
played TAGS didn't seem to play many of the color episodes. That is until
TVLand
started TAGS. I know that the B&W episodes are very special, and near and dear
to my heart as well as many people's hearts. Having said that, I've been
recently watching those color episodes and enjoying them a great deal,
especially
since I haven't seen them for quite some time. I really appreciate TVLand
showing all of the shows, and love them all. Andy, Floyd, Aunt Bee, etc., kept
on being hilarious even when the color shows started. Just my opinion, but
Mayberry is Mayberry, no matter what, and I love it!!! :) (Gosh, I'm being
really sappy tonight!)

How's the money coming along for the All-andy channel? I still think it's a
good idea. I also have a question. In the b&w episodes, did we ever see Andy
drive any car except one of the squad cars?

Subject: Aunt Bee

Hello all!
I have really been enjoying the Digest lately. Thanks to everyone who drops
in...it's a great way to end my day after work.
As for the Aunt Bee discussions, I have been thinking of the many times she
has caused me to laugh out loud:
John Masters: "Barney is going to join the choir...isn't that great Aunt Bee?"
Aunt Bee: (with a look that is super funny) "Yes"
...and what about:
Opie: "If Miss Clara gets ants, tell her not to kill 'em, I'll bring them
home and make an ant farm"
Aunt Bee: (not missing a beat) "Oh no you won't"
...or:
Andy (to Brisco as he's driving away) "...and if you don't leave Helen alone
I'm gonna arrest you"
Aunt Bee: "And we MEAN it!"
...and who could forget:
Aunt Bee as Lady Mayberry, or Aunt Bee as the crusader, ("we will NOT sing"),
or Aunt Bee "packing a mean spoon"...
the list goes on and on. She may not have been one of the main comic actors,
but to me, she was hilarious and there couldn't have been a more PERFECT
person to play this character!

>they are fans of Mayberry.<

I think the thing that I can not get past when it comes to the color episodes
is the disintegration of Andy's character. I am not saying that he is not a
fine, upstanding citizen, but his personality is so drastically more
negative then he ever was in the black and white episodes. It seems that
with the loss of his best friend he lost his tolerance with the town he lives
in. The humor shifted from focusing on brilliantly written chemistry between
two best friends who really care for
one another (as the case with most BW episodes) to a show finding its humor
in the central character being constantly frusturated with the people around
him and the town he lives in (most Color episodes). I am not at all saying
that I refuse to watch color episodes, there are several that I love just as
much as BW episodes. I still cry every time I see "Opies First Job" and it
is impossible to resist Aunt Bee learning to fly. However, I have to argue
that the mean streak that seems to fester in characters like Floyd, Clara,
and even Andy during the run of the color episodes really makes it impossible
to see that Mayberry as being the same place we lived during the black and
white episodes. I think Mayberry stopped being Mayberry when Barney Fife
left the show. I disagree with the writter who said that such a statement
who define me as a fan of Barney Fife, rather than a fan of Mayberry. I
simply feel Mayberry IS the people in it, its not the actual place, the town
is defined by the people and their relationships in the town. Therefore, for
me, Mayberry without Barney will never be Mayberry.

Well, it looks like Im "all mouth tonight!" Sorry to take up so much space
but its been prayin on my mind.

"they always gave me the cold
shoulder since I am not a police officer and I drive a "fake" police car."

New Years Eve, I drove my 63 squad car to celebrate with my flying buddies
at our
little grass strip airfield, and a Highway Patrolman (State Police) passed
me on I-85
and blew his horn, just a waving and a grinning. I almost put on my red
light and siren to pull
him over and see iffin he had been to see the Morrison sisters and drank
some of their elixer.
Most times they just stare at me or don't look when they pass me (I don't
know about elsewhere, but around
here our SHP troopers are a bit NAZI ish, Don't get me wrong most are just
plain good folks,
just maybe they put their poker faces on when working)

But most city and county police wave to me or give me thumbs up. Just today
I took the ole squad car
out for a spin and an unmarked Charlotte officer flashed his lights and
strobes and waved as we met,
I waved and grinned back at him, It is amazing at how nice us po folk get
treated just because we can't afford to drive fancy new cars.

... I can't remember the episode where Helen and Andy actually became
engaged. Is there one, or did they just slip it in on us?
>>>

There isn't an episode where the engagement is officialy announced. It's
mentioned (casually) for the first time in "Helen the Authoress." Of
course, they do finally get married, but not until the first episode of
Mayberry RFD (the episode title is "Andy and Helen Get Married.").

Today, the marriage seems to cause a lot of confusion among casual fans of
the show. People are always telling me that they remember seeing the
wedding episode years ago and they wonder why it is never aired anymore.
The answer is that it IS still aired, but only as an episode of Mayberry
RFD, and never as an episode of TAGS.
