Out of concern for her safety (yeah, right) Barney calls out there every now and then to sort of "trouble check." Later, she and Olive both work at the Blue Bird Diner, which later still is known simply as the Mayberry Diner. As far as I can recall, the Blue Bird _CAFE_ is never mentioned on TAGS, but only in Andy's early comedy recordings. In "Make Yourself Comfortable," speaking of the expenses a young man has incurred on a date, he says, "Ain't no tellin' how much money he dropped at the Blue Bird Cafe right by itself." - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 19:41:57 -0600 From: "Barry Brown" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: T R The answer to the Tracy Ruppert question it was the cannon episode he had his initials scratched on it [ with a nail] Andy told the collector it was Teddy Roosevelt's initials. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 07:05:18 +0100 From: "Tod A. Lawlis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: My Mayberry Job Seein' as how I'm a band director and all, I think that's what I'd like to do in Mayberry - direct the school and the town bands. Floyd and his trombone have got a lot of potential. I just hope Andy don't mind givin' up his directin' and playin' the tuba full-time instead... Andy: (paraphrased) "Phil, I know them fur-belows is hard and I admire your ability to rattle 'em off like that, but I wonder if you could quaint it up a little bit?" (Sorry if that isn't exactly it - I'm trying to bring that one up from memory, as I don't have all of my TAGS tapes here in Africa!) I always wondered if she was actually playing the piano in that scene. There is no doubt that she is doing the singing and it doesnt have that dubbed in sound like a lot of the other musical interludes in TAGS do (Like that super guitar playing Jim Best) (not that I'm saying anything bad about Jim, I wouldn't want to break rule #2) Also as to the color and black and white issue. I have myself noticed that several episodes that I rem seeing as black and white evidently were actually in color. Was it a common practice for TV stations to somehow rebroadcast them in Black and white instead of color? The last episode that I'm thinking of is the Class Reunion episode. (unless there are more than one of these) but the one I'm thinking of is the one that has Barney and Andy storing a trunk in Andys garage and the ending is the "Do the tears on your pillow..." line. Also in the reunion Barney is worried about some girl that he knew in school. He thinks will still be crazy about him and she actually doesnt even remember him at all. If this is the episode that was being discussed recently as being color, well I have only ever seen it in black and white. Some one tell me if I'm going crazy or not? Yep. He drove Barney's 19-fifty-four Ford See-dan before it broke down completely and he had to help push it! Doug "Rafe Hollister" Garretson "I don't believe I've ever seen anything like that before." __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Cya Steve >>> I'm glad you brought this up, because I'd be willing to bet (except that I don't gamble) that a great many of the people reading this have never even heard of this series. Here's how it came about, as I understand it: In 1970, Andy Griffith was a very hot commodity, and CBS made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He was given a large budget and allowed to more or less create his own show from scratch. The result was "Headmaster," a series in which Andy Griffith played the headmaster (principal) of a private school. The other major character was the sports coach, played by Jerry Van Dyke. The show did not catch on, presumably because audiences didn't want to see Andy in an urban setting. So, after just a few episodes, Headmaster was cancelled, and another series for Andy was needed. The result was "The New Andy Griffith Show," an attempt to recapture the success of The Andy Griffith Show. Andy played Andy Sawyer, the mayor of Greenwood. In this series, Andy had a wife (played by Lee Meriweather), and two kids, a boy and a girl, and an extremely annoying in-law, played by Ann Morgan Guilbert. She was always whining and complaining, and you felt like somebody should just give her a good smack to shut her up (I can say this without breaking any rules, because I'm not talking about TAGS here). The first episode of The New Andy Griffith Show featured George Lindsey as Goober Pyle, Paul Hartman as Emmett Clark, and Don Knotts. Don's character was not mentioned by name, but he wore Barney's salt and pepper suit and hat, and drove Barney's Edsel. All three came to Greenwood to beg favors from their friend Andy, the new mayor. It was like Mayberry meets the Twilight Zone, and it didn't work at all. What in the world were characters from Mayberry doing there? It was WEIRD. This show didn't last long either. Just 13 episodes were produced, only three of which have ever turned up on video in collectors' hands. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 04:30:41 -0800 (PST) From: Robin Jaynette <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V3 #18 >In the b&w episodes, did we ever see Andy drive any car except one of the squad cars?< Andy was driving Barneys car when they went looking for Mrs Leash (Spell?) On the subject of color virsus b&w episodes, my biggest problem with the color shows was that Andy seemed less southern, his accent even changed, I don't think he said ain't anymore, maybe he can get a free ice cream cone from Ellie, but I have been enjoying the color ones on TVLand, Floyd is a hoot in any color! BTW, I don't usually respond to trivia questions on this list, unless it's put directly to me, or its a question that I figure very few others will be able to answer. That was a relatively easy one. Since we're still on the subject on the town cannon, does anybody know where I could buy an authentic Civil War cannon? Auction sites like eBay don't allow the sale of weapons, so that's out, but there must be someplace I could get one. There's a spot in my yard that would be perfect (if I could just talk my wife into the idea). Of course what I REALLY want is a TANK.... - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 07:04:04 -0600 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Andy's driving From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] In the b&w episodes, did we ever see Andy drive any car except one of the squad cars? >>> Just once that I can think of off the top of my head: He drives Barney's Ford in "Barney's First Car." Before anybody brings up the pickup truck in episode one, we see it sitting near his house, but it's not moving, and a few episodes later in "Runaway Kid" he pushes Barney's car up to a fireplug as a joke, but he doesn't DRIVE the car. Now, who can name all the vehicles we see Barney driving? - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 07:15:50 -0600 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: squad cars >>>But most city and county police wave to me or give me thumbs up. Just today I took the ole squad car out for a spin and an unmarked Charlotte officer flashed his lights and strobes and waved as we met, I waved and grinned back at him, It is amazing at how nice us po folk get treated just because we can't afford to drive fancy new cars. Phil >>> I've gotten nothing but admiration from police officers who see my car on the street. They all want to have a closer look, and some of the older career officers have a story to tell about the cars they used to drive. One man pulled out a photo of his deceased father, standing next to a car like mine, wearing a state trooper's uniform. What I meant earlier was, that it's the members of the PCOOA (many of whom are not police officers) who have been less than enthusiastic about my car. I suppose it's mostly just sour grapes, since at all the shows I've been to, the Mayberry cars and the Blues Brothers cars get more attention than the real police cars! - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 07:41:09 -0600 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: wbmutbb-digest V3 #18 <<I also have a question. You'll have to make it perfectly clear >that you intend to use them only for novelty purposes. Just last year in St. Pete a young man bought a baseball cap with LAPD across the front. The local cop that arrested the man said he was impersonating an officer. The man was walking into a 7-11 to buy a drink. He was told by the cop to take the cap off. He did and was still arrested. Some towns just aren't Mayberry friendly. Careful how you wear that badge and patch!
