"Where's my plaque? Give me my plaque"
On the subject of color verses B & W episodes, I consider myself a HUGE TAGS
fan, and have been obsessed with it for 15 yrs or so and personally I prefer
the
B & W. Admittedly I do lean towards "OLE Barn" as my "favorite "character
(can't tell by the name can ya?) but I think the B & W shows starring Barney
were so good because of the chemistry between Andy & Barney. Because it was
such a tremendous chemistry the storylines were very simple ... they either
had your on the floor laughing or left us with a little lesson in life... So
many of the early ones were wonderful, just the look on Barney's face
sometimes could just crack you up....and no one could look any sillier than
he did on that motorcycle....and only on Tags could anything be more
hilarious then when Barn took off and left Andy sitting in the side car
grinning from ear to ear...(my 14 yr olds favorite episode) When Barney left
the show.. dialogues broadened and the stories were more complicated
involving so many outside characters or more impersonal things.. and I think
that Andy's mannerisms changed a lot, he tried hard to loose his "southern
draw" ...and silliness although one episode was really hilarious when he and
Helen chaperoned the junior high dance ...looked like his feet were on fire.
I loved them all but the B & W episodes remain my all time favorite. I
seriously doubt that so many fans would be out there if we were only ever
shown the colored ones.

>>>Was it a common practice for TV stations to somehow rebroadcast them in
Black and white instead of color? --Dapper Dan

WGN did this for years. Believe it or not, they got better ratings when
they showed color episodes in black and white than when they showed the
color episodes in color. Apparently many viewers, upon seeing the first few
seconds of a color episode, immediately switched the channel. When the
casual fans thought they were seeing a black and white episode they'd never
seen, they watched.

However, the first class reunion episode was always in black and white. It
came near the end of the third season, and Mayberry didn't turn to color
until the 6th season.

All of this talk about Aunt Bee is really just scratching the surface of what
a truly complex woman the lady was. On the one hand, one of the other
posters hit it right on the head when they discussed the generation of women
who derived joy from doing for others. Aunt Bee was truly part of that. I
could see her starting scrap drives and helping out at the Red Cross during
World War II and perhaps even supervising whenever she's there.

On the other hand, Aunt Bee was no soft-spoken, "stay in her place" type
either. She was a very iron willed woman, not to be trifled with. Just ask
Otis ("I'll never come back to the rock again!") or Briscoe Darling (who kept
getting hit with the spoon). Sure, Aunt Bee got lonely and wanted a man
every know and then but most women do...but think about this: when she felt
her life was lacking a little something, her response was to take flying
lessons. A true renaissance woman, Aunt Bee!

One of the most beautifully written episodes of the entire series...and it
was a true black and white. The giveaway is the 1963 squad car...and BTW,
don't miss the epilogue on this one...

Hey everybody. On the subject of Andy driving, didn't he take off in
Goobers truck when Warren didn't want him and Helen to go on the picnic
because something bad was going to happen to them. Seems to me Warren made
Goober take off the distrubuter cap so it wouldn't start, so Andy borrowed
Goobers truck. I think I saw that! Just thought I'd past that along.

Someone mentioned how police officers respond to Mayberry, or more
specifically to the patrol car. I have found a lot of officers who are big
Mayberry fans around here, including my cousin who is the sheriff of Etowah
County, Alabama. If you ever visit the police department in Roanoke,
Alabama, and head toward the dispatcher's office, you will find a picture of
Barney on the door, along with his famous quote about "no more peanut butter
and jelly sandwiches".

He doesn't actually drive it, but he and Aunt Bee start to get into a pickup
truck when Aunt Bee is planning to leave at the end of the first episode.

There's also a memorable color episode of "Gomer Pyle, USMC" in which Gomer
comes back to Mayberry only to find Andy, Opie, Goober and Aunt Bee all gone
on a camping trip. As Gomer leaves town on the bus at the end, he sees the
four of them driving up and getting out of a Dodge station wagon at the
courthouse, with Andy getting out on the driver's side.

Hey Everyone!!

One of my favorite episodes is Mountain Wedding. What a crack-up. Where
Barney dresses up like the bride Charlene Darling and good ol Ernest T Bass
runs off with him, thinking it was Charlene of course.

Love the music and the humor it that one. Andy and Barney going up to the
Mountains to straighten out good ol Ernest T Bass.. If you missed it you
gotta see it..Its a really good one...

Yikes, let me think...Barney's 1954 Ford...his 1960 Edsel with the '61
grille...his motorcycle with the sidecar...at least five of the seven squad
cars...that's all I can remember.

TAGS fans,

I know it was specifically asked if Andy drove any other cars besides
the squad car. If we expand that to just vehicles in general, Andy drove
the motorcycle over to National Guard Armory. We didn't necessarily see
it, but we did see him get on and start it.

Warren thinks
he has ESP, Goober takes off the distributor cap of the squad car, and Andy
and Helen
drive off in Goobers pickup..

In the b&w episodes, did we ever see Andy
drive any car except one of the squad cars?

Yes, he drove Barney's car (he bought it from Mrs. Lesch) after it broke down
on the road.

in answer to pauls' question about how many vehicles we see barney drive, i
can think of:
1.the squad car, naturally
2.his car from mrs. lesch
3.cars when he visits from raleigh( don't remember if there was more than
one or not)
4.the bicycle from steve quincy
5.the motorcycle
6.floyd's car( the escaped convict episode)
paul, this is a tough one......how did i do?

Hey, I thought of another one! Andy takes Goober's truck when Goober &
Warren steal the distributor cap out of the squad car so Andy & Helen won't
go to the lake. He was mad, let me tell you, and drives away just a little
too fast. Maybe he was going faster than the Fun Girls drove through town!
