I love the B&W ones more. But, I have learned like someone said, if you turn the color off of your TV sets then it is like watching a new episode, for me anyway. I have not seen most of the color episodes and when I turn the color off it is like I am seeing a brand new episode. So, everyone try this and see how it makes you excited to think (even though it really isn't) you are watching something new. Also, I seen on Entertainment Tonight that Andy Griffith is going to guest star on the WB's Dawson Creek on Feb. 7th. Everyone be sure to tune in. It airs at 8 pm eastern time. I can't wait to see this episode. So Mayberry apparently did have a fire department." >>> The volunteer fire brigade is also mentioned in "Keeper of the Flame," and in "The Case of the Punch in the Nose" we learn that old sheriff's records are kept in the basement of the firehouse. Additionally, the episode "Goodbye, Sheriff Taylor" includes a reference to an accident at 4th and Main involving a garbage truck and a hook-and-ladder. I wouldn't expect the Mayberry Volunteer Fire Brigade to have a hook-and-ladder truck; perhaps it was just passing through. Surely some Yankee will have a more definitive answer, but I believe a "boiled dinner" is some sort of beef and vegetable stew. - --Paul ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 21:21:08 -0600 From: "Paul Mulik" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: newspaper >>>From: Bob Bravetti <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I don't think there was an answer to my trivia question yet, so I'll repost it: What is the name of the Mt. I had a question if someone could answer it. Was Don Knotts in the broadway version of No time for Sargents or the film with Andy. I didn't see him in the film but I only have caught part of it. Those that prepare it know how to seperate the different vegetables, in layers, so they won't run together. The last one that I went to was a couple of years ago and had potatoes, carrots, squash, and the like. It is really good that way. I don't know if that is what Andy and Gomer are talking about, but that is what we call a "boiled dinner" in this area. I thought it was always extry-good. Then if you want to, you can walk down to the drug store and get some ice cream for later. Some hotels have been known to sell out of rooms as early as February. I saw the best interviews last night on Entertainment Tonight!! Andy told of his heart surgery and of the Andy Griffith Show. Some very good photos of Andy also Jim Nabors of his liver problems and his almost death experiences. It was awsome!! Andy and Jim both look terrific now. Glad I stayed up late to watch that one. A rare sight. Whether you have an old color set with knobs, or a big new set: 1. if you have knobs, find the one that reads:color (NOT tint!) color. turn that knob until all the color intensity disappears.!!poof! 2. If you have a remote color set, take the remote in your hand, go to menu, and maybe set-up where you get color, hue, intensity, etc. Push the button on the remote that removes or lowers the amount of color; poof! the color disappears. I will admit, it IS easier on a color set with knobs you can reach and touch; It is a hassle to get a remote and do everything on-screen; I like knobs, better; instant results!!! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 20:42:43 -0800 (PST) From: Joe and Sandra Causby <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Expctations of the times Good Morning Mayberry I was just thinking about a couple of episodes that I thought were reflections of the times that I haven't seen discussed much and decided to throw it out there. When Barney mistakenly for the gazillionth time thinks Andy is engaged to someone (this time Helen), they fix up Andy's room as a surprise. (He saw them kissing in the jewelry store and assumed they were getting engaged). When it was all over and Andy and Helen were talking about it and he was apologizing and said for now there had been a mistake, she jumped in and said, "I'm not ready now either, I've studied for so long and I'd really like to teach for awhile...." In today's world this wouldn't make much sense because no one would even think that Helen would have to stop teaching in order to be married, but at that time, the thinking was that single women gave up their jobs to become career housewives (Nothing wrong with that if that is what the lady wants, but this seemed to be the expectation at that time). Then in the episode where Barney is initially trying to find a wife for Andy and invites Andy and Helen separately to Thel's house for dinner, Barney is absolutely shocked to find out that Helen didn't plan to give up her job when she got married. (even more shocked to hear her say she couldn't cook and her husband would have to eat frozen dinners). Again the expectation was that a woman did not work once she was married. There are a couple of inconsistencies between the two episodes since in this one Helen says she doesn't plan to quit once married and in the other one she sort of implies the opposite in her comments about wanting to teach for a while which sounds like if she got married, she knew she couldn't continue to do so. After all, the nicest place and time to live would have to be Mayberry in the B&W days. Of course, the second would have to be Mayberry in the color days. Look at it this way, the B&W episodes were so strong, they were able to carry the show through it's color days (and the ratings sure held up well). So, if for no other reason, watch and enjoy the color episodes at least as a tribute to the earlier days. I think I missed a digest, so I don't recall if Andy driving Aunt Bee's black Ford convertable has been mentioned. Surely this sharp group has and I just missed it. It is called "What-a-Character." It offers pictures of dozens of character actors who appeared on TAGS. A click on any photo takes you to that person's biography and list of screen credits. Here is how to get there: (1) Go to the site's address of www.what-a-character.com (2) Click on "The Andy Griffith Show" link at the left. This will give you a small assortment of (mostly) main characters. (3) Click on "TV Guest Appearances" above the group of pictures. (4) Click on the letter "T" (5) Click on "The Andy Griffith Show" There are four full pages of characters displayed, in addition to that first "main character" page. Give it a try. I think you'll like it. By the way, I'm proud to say that my great uncle, Joseph Hamilton, was a Mayberry regular in many of the early episodes. He usually appeared as one of the loafers outside the courthouse. One of his lines was, "Hey, Barney, get a horse!" (in "Barney's Sidecar"). Uncle Joe was my grandmother's sister's husband. He started out at the famous Pasadena Playhouse and then went on to Hollywood. Later, he landed the recurring role of "Calvin the Plumber" in a very successful advertising campaign. "You want to know what I think? I don't think that dog could find his own food dish." Richard Veit ****NOTE FROM ALLAN***** Just for an easier way to get to "What-a-Character.com".... There has been a link from the TAGSRWC web site directly to the TAGS pages on What-a-Character.com for about a year. Just go to the TAGSRWC web site (http://mayberry.com/tagsrwc/) and scroll down the left hand menu frame until you see the link. It's near the bottom. I just wan to encourage ALL the folks here in town to drop by and visit the TAGSRWC web site. There is a LOT there that I think some of you are missing out on. --Allan ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V3 #23 **************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
