LEGENDARY ACTOR ANDY GRIFFITH RETURNS TO NORTH CAROLINA TO GUEST STAR ON
"DAWSON'S CREEK" ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7
Burbank, CA (January 31, 2001) -- Andy Griffith, one of the most beloved
actors in the history of television, returns to his North Carolina roots for
a special appearance in a life-changing episode of Dawson's Creek airing
Wednesday, February 7 (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) on The WB.
In the episode entitled "A Winter's Tale," Dawson (James Van Der Beek) is
faced with the decision of whether to take his mentor, Mr. Brooks (Harve
Presnell), off life-support after the older man falls into a coma. Dawson
seeks guidance from Mr. Brooks' oldest friend (Griffith) who comes to the
hospital to say his farewell and leaves Dawson with some enlightening
advice.
Like Dawson's Creek, Griffith's popular and long-running comedy series The
Andy Griffith Show was also set in North Carolina, in the fictional town of
Mayberry. Griffith's role as a small-town sheriff who brought gentle humor
and heartfelt wisdom to his job made him an instant favorite of television
audiences. His second hit series was the drama Matlock, in which he played
a criminal defense attorney who always got his man. The show ran for nine
years, and in 1987 Griffith received a People's Choice Award for his role as
Ben Matlock. Griffith also received a 1955 Tony nomination for his breakout
role in the Broadway play No Time for Sergeants" and an Emmy nomination in
1981 for his portrayal of Ash Robinson in Murder in Texas.

Hiddy All!
Wow! Two posts in one week! I always have something to say when I read my
digests, but usually read them offline so I don't ever respond. Well, I've
decided to just write my responses and load them each time I log on!
Anyway, I just have to respond to Tom Atchity regarding Andy guest staring
on Dawson's Creek. Having worked on a movie in Wilmington, I know most of
the crew of Dawson's Creek and since Andy lives just outside of Wilmington
on a private Island, I'm really surprised they haven't found room for him
before! My little sister did a walk-on on Dawson's Creek their first
season, but I've never gotten into the show. I watched hers and will watch
this one. It is fun seeing places I've been in person!
Speaking of seeing places I've been, the movie I worked on, "The Jackal",
was filmed on the soundstages at Wilmington, where Matlock was filmed. It
was the season after Matlock was through filming, I guess, and some of the
stages were still set up. I hardly ever watch Matlock, but caught a few
with my Grandfather, as he loved it. The courtroom was still there, as was
Andy's kitchen. We took them down in order to use the stages. It was neat
to walk through Andy's kitchen and the courtroom!
OK. I guess that's all I've got for today! I've been looking for those
young photos of a young Francis in the Taylor home and haven't spotted them
yet. I'll keep looking! My boyfriend commented the other night that he
just didn't care for the color episodes, like many here, and I said to him:
"Well, look at it this way, would you rather watch a color Andy or no Andy
at all?" and of course he said a color Andy! I said, well there you go! I
for one, am enjoying seeing the epilogues of the color episodes that I've
never seen before. And don't the trees seem nice and full!!
Have a Mayberry Day! And act like somebody!

Hey Charlie...
You are sooooooooo right! There were some very good episodes without Barney.
Don't get me wrong...if someone forced me to give a favorite character, it
would have to be Barn but the episodes you mentioned were some of the best
ones. The show wouldn't have been the same without him but it is nice to see
that it can still be VERY funny. "Floyd, the Gay Deceiver" is one of my all
time favorite episodes!! Who can watch that one without laughing???

Subject: Gramps
I saw Andy Griffith in a movie called "Gramps" several years ago. I think it
was John Ritter who played Andy's son in the movie. Andy did an eeeeeextry
good job playing a lovable grampa one minute and a sneaky, underhanded
villain the next. That's the actor of the man. We love him as Sheriff Taylor,
but he has proven to be a versa -tile
actor.
I had a copy of "Gramps" that I loaned to someone who loved it so well they
never returned it.
AND TAKE THAT GUN OUTTA YOUR MOUTH!

Subject: Color episodes
Like everybody else, the B/W episodes are my favorite, but some of the color
ones are great too. I loved the Oregono episode (don't know if that's the
real name for it, but it's what I always think of), and remember when Howard
has his "bach" party? I'm watching it right now. And you know, in the end,
when the guys have exhausted Helen with their attempts at dancing, Emmett
comes over and shows them how to really cut a rug. And it reminded me that
he was in a lot of 50s musicals in his own right.
You know, in the color episodes, I've always wondered why Andy kept on
playing the straight man. He was good as a comedian too. "What this is, is
football." And remember his explanation of Romeo and Juliet? Oh, well,
need to end this for the time being...Howard is explaining the function of a
bachelor pad.

Subject: Charlie Varney's house
>>> In the scene where Andy and Barney go over to Charlie Varney's house to
investigate their suspicions about the imbibing that was going on inside
there is a building in the background that appears to have windows that are
typical of a church. This would put the church directly across the street
from Charlie Varney's house.
>>>
The same house was used over and over (and over and over) in many episodes.
Except for folks like Rafe Hollister and Sam Becker who lived on farms, it
seems like almost everybody in Mayberry lived in the same 1/2-block section
of Maple Road between Andy's house and the courthouse (the church is
diagonally opposite the courthouse, and since it's a good-sized structure,
it's across the street from all of the aforementioned houses).
Just for the record, the Taylors live in the same house in every episode,
but in various episodes their address is given as 24 Elm, 332 Maple, and 14
Maple. The last one must be correct, because that's the one that Andy
gives.

Gary,
No, there was no Coors beer in North Carolina
until sometime in the late 70's, I remember as a teen
we would go over the Virginia border and buy Coors
(only on special occasions), back then it had those
two round holes in the top of the can instead of a
pull top.

Watching Aunt Bee taking flying lessons the other night and everytime she
would make her approach she would turn in front of 4 smokestacks of an
obvious power plant. I'd heard them mention the water works before, but I
didn't know about the power plant.
And she was flying around some pretty unusually North Carolina scenery.

After seeing the episode recently about Helen's Past, it occurred to me that
folks in Mayberry often have a hard time keeping secrets.
It this color episode the details of Andy's investigation of Helen get
around town pretty fast. It is reminiscent of the Gold Truck episode, "A
Black Day for Mayberry" where Barney's self-fulfilling prophecy "word might
get out" came very true. We see in the episode "Those Gossipin' Men" how
fast news travels...both in the case of Barney cutting his finger...and the
Shoe Salesman who is supposedly a Talent Scout for a television show.
Barney is famous for spreading news, when he doesn't exactly have the facts
right...usually concerning Andy's engagement status.
Just wondering...did Mayberry ever keep a good secret? (besides Oregano in
spaghetti)

Hey Tags: I was watching an Andy Griffith show last evening, where Barney
gives Opie sling shot lessons and he breaks the glass in the book case. I
felt so sorry for opie when he shot the bird up in the tree by accident. But
he did a great job in taking care of the baby birds. I love the part where
barney gives opie the twizers to feed the babie birds with, because they
won't eat anything with mans spores on it. "So the next time I go hunting i'm
gonna take my twizers", Barney has more ole wives tells then any one in the
show. Barney sure is great. But I have one question. Why is the show called
The Andy Griffith Show, and its more about Barney? Well lots of luck to you
and yours, and tell Aunt Bee mary says hey! Mary
