Engle" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: don knotts in KC/ Harrison Everett Breen Well, I got to see Don Knotts last night in Kansas City--dinner theatre. Ol Barn was wonderful! While he's a little more soft spoken than in earlier days, he is still funny and has wonderful timing. In one scene, he starts to "strangle" one of the other characters. My wife had to put her hand over my mouth to keep me from yelling Citizen's Arrest! While I wore my Mayberry tie and my Mayberry Union High jacket, there was no real opportunity for autographs, although they did have autographed copies of Don's book on sale for $15. On another subject, Sermon for Today is one of my favorites. I have a theory about Dr. Harrison Everett Breen that I've never seen talked about anywhere. Could Dr. Breen be a reference to Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick, who was pastor at the Riverside Church in NYC from 1925-46? Fosdick had also written a book. I know the decades are different, but the names and the fact of being from New York are too close, I think, to be a coincidence. Does anyone else know about this or have a theory? As I'm brand new to wbmutbb, maybe this has come up before. I sure enjoy reading what others have to say about TAGS. Lotsa luck to you and yours. What Allen (and the rest of us) want to do here is provide a forum for a show we love and are somewhat protective of. We embrace the inconsistencies of story, acting, and quality because of our passion for the show. We're not here to debate and decide whether black and white is better than color, why Andy seems to change with the years (As if any of us are the same as we were 8 years ago!), whether the writing is better in early years ( the writing quality of all tv programs is somewhat uneven). The simple truth is that us "true believers", to quote my mamaw, "love 'em all the same." I hope I'm not murdering an analogy here, but it's somewhat like a marriage. For better or worse, in color or black-and-white, with Barney or Warren, til death do us part... There are other forums out there to do what it seems you looking for. We want you to stay. You'll learn things here you never knew about the show (Thanks to Paul M. and others), and you might just come to love it as much as we all do. Barney didn't sing in the choir at church and we all know why. If TL spent time glueing covers on hymn books with Edgar Coleman, then she was probably involved in church activities. Remember Barney said he walked Miss Rosemary to preachin' every Sunday, but of course we never saw her in church with him (nor did we see Thelma Lou). But, then Barney only seemed to date Miss Rosemary or asked her for a date in that one episode....I have often wondered what other episodes might have been like had they shown him courting Miss Rosemary. His romance with Hilda Mae also didn't last, but then Thel came along and as we all know, she was just "the cats" and that was that - until Melissa came along with her daddy (aka as her husband) and Barney started flirting. Sorry...I have been rambling & got sidetracked from Barney taking lady friends to church to thinking about all those he has dated...including Juanita, Vicky Harms and then there was Tina Andrews and the daughter of the boarding house people he lived with in Raleigh who turned out to be the robbers of the supermarkets....Can anyone think of other girl friends of Barney's??? Lynda, The man in a hurry is Malcolm Tucker - from Charlotte, NC - NO, not Charlotte Tucker, Malcolm Tucker - from Charlotte. :-) I believe that big car he was driving is a Lincoln Contintntal Town Car - really a classic luxruy automobile. I missed my first one, because I sent it in during a time when there were a lot of posts, and the digests were flying out fast and furious. I'd go back and check again. I've seen posts here that broke the rules (usually only in order to gently correct the writer) and a couple that had to be censored (again, I think published for correction's sake), so I can't imagine that yours was really not included. Has anyone taken part in Lessons From Mayberry? It's a bible study workshop put out by Thomas Nelson Publishers where an episode of TAGS is shown, then you get out your workbooks and Bibles and discuss the moral lesson of that particular episode and look up Bible verses related to it. A sales clerk at White Wing Bookstore here in town said her Sunday School class started meeting one night a week and word got out about it, and it grew so fast, they had to have TWO meetins a week! I ordered it off of Amazon.com, but haven't received it in the mail yet. I'm kinda excited to see if any of y'all have heard or participated in it yet! - --Robin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 03:17:35 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: White Elephants I've enjoyed all this talk about White Elephants, because it reminded me of a group my Mom used to belong to .. they called it "The Bowling Team" (TAGS Reference #1, remember Howard's perfect game?) because the original group was a group of ladies who actually bowled together. As the ladies married, had children, moved in and out of town, the "bowling team" grew to about 40 people, and the "bowling team" Christmas party was a huge social event. Ladies only, no spouses or children allowed. One of the special "white elephant" gifts they exchanged was a phrenology head .. I think this "science" was mentioned in TAGS too. That was where they told your personality or intelligence by feeling the bumps on your head... and these china heads had the scalp all sectioned off into "intelligence", "memory" and things like that. Well, the "head" used to show up dressed in all kinds of costumes .. one year it was an Indian chief (another TAGS reference, remember consulting the Indians about history in Mayberry?) and another time it was Santa Claus. They did the exchange like someone else said .. where you drew a number and took either that package or someone else's if you wanted it. Anyway, the ladies used to get pretty silly, because they used some of the Colonel's elixer or something mighty similar to wash down all those cookies and snacks .. and the husbands (my Dad included) often had to show up at the end of the party to drive the ladies home! This sounds so much like a TAGS script! But the ladies bowling team in my home town lasted for over 50 years .. wouldn't Aunt Bee and Clara Edwards be proud of that kind of friendship! Thanks to Allan and everyone for keeping this digest a fun place to spend some time every day. Maybe the reason that controversy is taboo is because you'd have to dig pretty deep to come up with anything, and if you feel the need to do that, then Mayberry obviously doesn't give you the same good feeling that it gives so many of us. Looks to me like lively discussions CAN be positive...the Digest is, for the most part, are a bunch of folks that love "TAGS". And while we don't always agree on everything, our basic love of the show is our common bond. Besides, don't we have enough controversy in every day life? Who wants to come to our little corner of Mayberry and sit around discussing what's wrong with it. I, for one, love talking about what's right with it and there should be enough material there to keep us busy from now on!
