Subject: Pastimes in Mayberry

Someone recently noticed the lack of much or any mention of North Carolina's
favorite sport, basketball, on TAGS. While reading the digest this evening,
I ran across a mention of the Daytona 500 today, and I realized (from under
the bucket, of course), that there is another one missing: stock car racing.
Now I know that the writers were not from North Carolina, but REALLY ...
omitting two of NCs top pastimes - well it just isn't ept. Seeing as how
stock car racing has a bit of history with the moon shiners, and seeing as
how moon shining is a sometime topic of the show, one just wonders why there
was no passing reference to the sport. I wonder if Andy just didn't care
much for either of these, and that is why there is little or no mention of
them on the show. On the flip side, it seems that Opie played quite a bit
of football, which is not known as a big Carolina sport (at least not like
the old round ball is). Was it different for these sports back in the 60s?

I'm glad that Allan doesn't allow controversy on the Digest. When David
was describing Mayberry as a calm cool place, I had this picture in my
mind of what happened when the Mayberry folks got all stirred up when
Barney drug up the old case about the punch in the nose, and all these
folks went around punhing other folks in the nose as the result of
getting all stired up again. Sakes alive we don't want to see that
happen all over again in our little corner of Mayberry. We want it to
be all peaceful & calm like so we can enjoy our little town. With all
the strife going on all over the real world, it is nice to be able to
retreat to a better place & sit on the front porch & enjoy the comments
of our neighbors who write in.

You betcha! Howard's history with Sid Caesar goes back to the 1950s... he
costarred on "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour," and he appeared in
numerous comedy skit classics with Caesar, Imogene Coca, Nanette Fabrey, Carl
Reiner and others. I highly recommend going to www.imdb.com (Internet Movie
Database) for an accounting of Mr. Morris' career. He is also an
accomplished and respected director ("The Andy Griffith Show," "One Day at a
Time") and animation voice artist ("The Flintstones," "The Jetsons," "Top
Cat"). A close friend to Mel Brooks (from their Caesar days) he costarred in
Brooks' Hitchcock satire "High Anxiety." And (a personal favorite) Howard
appeared with The Three Stooges in a 1966 US Savings Bond promotional short
entitled "Star Spangled Salesman," which also costarred Carol Burnett, Milton
Berle, Tim Conway, Jack Webb, Harry Morgan, Carl Reiner, Werner Klemperer and
John Banner.

Among his peers, Howard Morris is considered a comic genius. Among his fans
too.

Hey everyone,

Untill some of the recent posts started mentioning the "no negative" rule I
did not realize that it was one. I want to say I am sorry for pointing out
problems with the color episodes in my past posts. It was a stupid thing to
do and I want to make it up to everyone by taking them out to dinner. But
remember, you cant go home and put on clean socks and underwear.

My question today is does anyone rember seeing any production give aways
during an episode? You know like a microphone showing, or dolly track or
something like that? I do not rember any myself but just wondering if anyone
else could think of any.

Take care,

He's done hundreds of cartoon voices, but he has appeared in a few live
action movies, most notably Mel Brooks films. He was in "High Anxiety,"
"Life Stinks," and as you mentioned, "History of the World Part I." Mr.
Brooks never made a History of the World Part II - maybe he's waiting until
"there's more of it."

Of course, Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass) also directed 8 TAGS episodes and
a few feature films, along with dozens and dozens of TV commercials.

That must have been Disney World's policy, because I've seen Jim in concert
three times, and every time he waited around afterwards for an hour or so
and talked to his fans and signed autographs. He's just about the nicest

Since the white elephant discussion has started, I was watching Anna and
the King with Jodie Foster. Of course, this is a story taking place in
Siam. The king's children do a play and in it they dress as a white
elephant. Unless I missed it, there was no reference to the significance
of the elephant but I thought it was worth mentioning since someone else
posted the Siam reference to the white elephant. All this talk has made
me spot a few "white elephants" in my own house, maybe its time for a
sale. Maybe I should plan it for Bastille Day!!

there be a subscription fee on the net? I am just trying to find out what I
can since I have not paid any dues for this year.

Checked out 4 Andy books from the library this week; The Andy Griffith Show
by Richard Kelly, Inside Mayberry by Dan Harrison & Bil Habeeb, The Andy
Griffith Show Book by Beck & Clark & The Official Andy Griffith Show
Scrapbook by Lee Pfeiffer. The first thing I read in Richard Kelly's book
was Harvery Bullock's never filmed script "The Wandering Minstrel." And
I'll tell you Harvey, I felt like it WAS filmed. I could see all the action
just like any other episode I had seen a 100 times. It was "outstanding" as
Andy would say. I couldn't help picturing Wally as a black man. Seemed to
fit him. One of the big things I noticed from this script was your mention
of Oxford. It just happens that I live not far from Oxford in Wake Forest,
NC. And my church has recently been collecting clothes and other things for
the Oxford Orphanage which has had a fire and the girls ages 11-14 lost
everything they owned. I wondered, "Does Harvey know Oxford is in NC or is
he thinking of a town in NY or did he just think it sounded good?" Then I
read the astonishing news in Harrison & Habeeb's Inside Mayberry that Harvey
was born in Oxford, NC. Now it all comes clear why Harvey is such a genius,
he's a tarheel. (Not that I'm a tarheel mind you, I'm a native Floridian
born & breed in Orlando.)

Well, I'm not done reading and I'm sure I'll have lots of comments to make
about other things I read. Ya'll will get sick of hearing about it.

Love, Maria

"Saw the film "Hannibal" this past week and heard the term 'fifedom' used
in context to a self-serving, slightly bungled police action. Is this
term derived from our good ole Barn or was the character's name chose as
a play on this term? Anyone out there know?"

In response to Misspoovey's inquiry, my guess (seeing as how I haven't
viewed the movie in question) is that the word being used is "fiefdom"
(pronounced with a long "e" rather than a long "i" sound). This word
refers to a feudal estate (from the Middle Ages). However Webster gives
a secondary meaning, which is evidently the one intended, namely
"something over which one has rights or exercises control <a politician's
~>." Hope this helps, Misspoovey!

My wife is on a Clint Eastwood kick. The movie we watched yesterday,
'Thunderbolt & Lightfoot', had the Mayberry town-clerk in it. Howard Sprague.

Also, The Bastille Prison was basically closed, containing only one political
prisoner. So the 'storming' was symbolic.

Hey Folks,

Here's the information about The Bullet again......

The Bullet's main reason for being was to keep fans of The Andy Griffith Show
informed about what was/is going on in and around Mayberry. Jim Clark,
TAGSRWC's presiding Goober, feels like that reason for being has pretty much
run it's course.

TAGSRWC should be able to stay in touch with it's members pretty well by use
of the TAGSRWC web site and a new internet newsletter that TAGSRWC HQ will
use to keep folks informed about stuff in Mayberry.

The new electronic email newsletter is going to be called eBullet in honor of
The Bullet . We hope the name eBullet will help folks make the connection
between the internet newsletter and the paper version. The eBullet is not
ready for folks to start signing up for it just yet but we are in the process
of getting it ready.

I'll be sure to let everybody know when the eBullet is ready for subscribing.

Below is a note from Jim Clark himself about The Bullet.
- ---------
Subject: Bullet Ending
From: TAGSRWC Headquarters in Nashville

I appreciate the very nice comments made by Gary and Tim on the Digest about
The Bullet ending in April. Judging from the calls, letters, and e-mails I've
received about the Bullet ending, apparently a lot of folks mistakenly think
that either my involvement with TAGSRWC or the entire club itself is ending.

Not at all. Maybe you can clarify for folks that it's only the printed Bullet
that's ending. An online version of The Bullet will take the place of the
printed Bullet (and a greatly simplified printed flier of some will be
available for those fans who are not online, but who want to stay informed).
The plan is that the savings in time and expenses will enable the club to do
more to support chapters, events, and other club activities.

The fact is that, after 19 years of doing The Bullet (and loving it), the
communications needs of the club have changed, largely because of the
Internet and the fact that we have 1150 chapters. We're just changing where
we're directing our energies and expenses to meet the changes in the club
since we started.

Folks who subscribe should look for the final issue of the printed Bullet in
late April.
Jim
- -------------

To answer that last question, there are no plans to charge for "eBullet" and
I don't expect that to ever change.

Allan
