What a weekend!..and it's not over yet. I've been taping some...watching
some, and still won't catch them all. When I can't just sit and watch, I
try to swing by the TV in time to catch the epilogs...many I've never seen
before. What a treat! What a crime that these were left off for some many
years of syndication. I guess I'm a true junkie when I, like most of you,
can pick out the park they cut out though to make room of it. I couldn't
believe they cut the Al Becker story out of the episode where Gomer dates
Mary Grace. I loved, the "Keeper of the Flashlight" epilog at the end of
"Keeper of the Flame"...and what a classic when Opie teaches Barney how to
sing (after Rafe showed him up in the singing tryout for the chorale)
Someone wrote in recently that they now had two TAGS-related books and they
were going to read up to be nearly equal to Paul. With all due respect dear
writer, you won't get close by reading. Paul, I think, has watched all the
shows about 40 times. It's like being a barber..you can't just learn to cut
hair over night.
Isn't it great finding guest stars that play totally different roles in
different Griffith episodes. The people who wanted to buy Andy's
house...the guy was the Mayor (or was it councilman) from Greendale and his
wife was Miss Rosemary. There are sooo many more.
To person trying to tape all the episodes...just watch TVland's weekly
schedule of shows for your missing #50. They publish on their TVland
website.
In "Those Gossipin' Men", I spotted a little glitch. One of the ladies
taking on the telephone is definitely speaking on a dial phone! (Don't she
like Sarah)
Those of you who don't have a favorite team in the NCAA this week. There is
one team that has a Fife, a Newton
(not Monroe) and a Jeffries (not in the ladies league though). Any other
teams with Mayberry related names?
(please keep TAGS-related)
Well back to the marathon! Joe Gritton, The Untrained voice.

Subject: No Crime in Mayberry
While watching the TAGS week-end, I heard the announcer say that TAGS was
the most ironic show on TV, its about a sheriff in a town with no crime.
There's lots of crime in Mayberry, Andy just "nips "
1. Vandalism- Ernest T's rock throwing
2. Cattle rustlin'- the episode with the cows wearing boots
3. Speeding- several of those
4. Lots of moonshining
5. Many escaped convicts and prisoners passsing through
6. Public drunkenness-Otis and Aunt Bee & the ladies group
7. Selling vegetables by the road without a license
8. Filling a radiator from a horse trough
9. Disturbing the peace-Darlings, Jim Lindsey and the couple who were always
fighting (which leads us to:
10. Domestic violence
11. Bank robbery
12. Littering
13. Riding bicycles on the sidewalk
14. Vagrancy (Buddy Epson episode)
15. Theft-pies from the window sill
I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting. Anyone want to add to the list?

Hey, I thought of another scene with no laugh track. I think there's
actually a ton
if you look at a lot of episodes. Its just that you rarley notice them.
I think the longest I know of is in the episode where the young girl poses as
a college student to investigate the courthouse. The entire "trial" scene at
the end is really long and has not one laugh track during it. (i
think...prettty sure...haha).
I think thats one of the most "dramatic" scenes out of all the Andy's.
Well,,,lots of luck to you and yours.
just a few more hours to go on the marathon...:(

I was listening to the radio show "This American Life" last Friday evening
and one segment was the fictional story of two brothers who had a pet
armadillo named Otis. It was great to hear the storyteller specifically say
it was named for "the happy drunk on the Andy Griffith Show."

The scene where Opie releases the baby birds, went on for some time without a
laugh track...as did the prelude, in which Opie is told by Andy it's that
time...For my money, the best dramatic scene ever in the series...

Subject: Did Mayberry Use A School Bus???
I was watching an episode tonight and noticed ( as many times before ),
that Miss Crump just said "class dismissed" when it was time to go home.
I didn't hear a bell ring, so I just assume the teachers watched the
clock and told the kids when go to home. But I was wondering, did the
school system not use a school bus? Were all the kids either close
enough to walk home, or did their
parents just pick them up. I know that Opie always walked home, but do
any of you ever remember seeing kids on a bus? I know the Mayberry Band
used a bus, but can't remember if it was a school bus.
"make you think!"

>>>I check out TV Land's web site for the line up so I know what's coming on
and can tape what I don't already have. What I don't understand is, though,
an episode was left out. Episode # 50 (Jailbreak) wasn't in the line up as
they went in order up to that point and on after that. Does anyone have an
explination for this or a possible solution?
>>>
Sometimes, a network will skip a particular episode so that they can air it
on a specific later date. For example, they might want to air "The Haunted
House" on Halloween, or "The Ball Game" on opening day of baseball season.
This doesn't seem to make sense for the episode in question, though. You
could always send TVLand an email; they're usually pretty good about
replying to questions about their programming. Just go to their main page
at tvland.com, and click where it says "write to us."

Jim Nabors is being inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame March 17 in
Mobile. I too was wondering if there were any TAGS related activities taking
place around that event. Anybody in the Mobile area know about any big
happenings?

Subject: Marathon Offer
Because "the system" here hasn't been reliable for a few days, I'm going to
repeat the Marathon offer again. For those who know about it already and
have seen the offer in the Digest, please bear with me.
There's only one word for this!! It's: "B-I-G!!!"
"Just Another Place at the Table for Friday Night Supper" Chapter of
TAGSRWC, in keeping with its chapter goal of encouraging and facilitating
the watching of TAGS by as many TAGS fans as possible, will be LENDING TAPES
OF THE TVLand MARATHON FOR COPYING to those who don't get TVLand.
This humanitarian TAGSRWC chapter has made this offer twice before, when
TAGS Marathons were shown on TBS. And we're making it again!!!
Because this project is so B-I-G, inquiries for further details about
borrowing the tapes should be made directly to the chapter's founder at this
email address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(Although the tapes are offered free of charge for copying purposes, there
WILL be mailing expenses associated with this offer.)

In response to Greg in Simi Valley:
Yes, the 'jinx' scene in the barber shop is touching. My favorite is Otis
reading his brother Ralph's pedigree, after Ralph locked himself in the jail.
The way Otis looks over at Andy & Barn, out of the corner of his eye, just
beaming with pride.
Perhaps, it's because I lost a brother to alcohol. If only I'da' been his
Otis...!

"Does anyone remember any others?"
One of my favorites is when Opie and Andy let the last bird
loose and Opie says, "The cage looks mighty empty." and
Andy responds, "Yes, but don't the trees seem nice and
full" which birds chirping in the back ground. It is kind
of an "all is right with the world" moment.
Ben Weaver singing "Away in the Manger" is a moving scene
too. We get to see that "Old Ben" is all bark and no bite.
There are others but I'll leave that up to other folks to
describe.

Yes, I'm one of those who missed 3 issues so I went on the web to view
them. Even though it's a mess and I'm confused, I'm glad I did. Thanks
to Steve for the technology info; I think I'll stick with videos for the
time being! As for the query about Don being able to play the harmonica,
I asked him that when he visited MGM a few years back and he said that
yes, he did indeed play the mouthharp! He is such a gracious person and
is certainly on my prayer list for a speedy recovery from whatever ails
him at the moment; thanks to that nice lady for letting us know!

Subject: Ramona Wiley
Well, now I won't look like such a know-it-all after all!
Eric Waff went and asked me to provide answers for questions about Ramona
Wiley I posed last week, and I may not get my own questions right! I'm here
at work, so am working from memory, so I might be off a little, but here
goes...
1. Barney and Ramona had Social Studies 1A together.
2. Ramona's nickname for Barney was "Tweeky".
3. Ramona's married name was Mrs. Harry Becktorus (my original question was
what was her maiden name, but we all know that was Wiley...meant to ask what
was her married name).
Bonus: I asked what the connection was between the two Ramonas on
TAGS...I'm kind of making this one up, but both are connected to the name
"Wiley". Barney's classmate Ramona was a Wiley while at Mayberry Union
High, and Ernest T.'s Ramona was a friend of Mrs. Wiley's (dare say we a
protigi of Mrs. W?), and with the way Mrs. Ramona Becktorus knew her
dancing at the Reunion, I'm guessing now that maybe she was Mrs. Wiley's
daughter. It's a stretch, but it's always fun to consider unwritten
connections between TAGs characters.
Keith in Nebraska
Mrs. Ramona (Wiley) Becktorus (talking to Barney, who's holding dirty cups):
"You're just the man I wanted to see!"
(Barney gets a satisfied look on his face.)
Ramona: "Waiter, two glasses of punch, please."
