Subject: dramatic scenes

Well all the folks are writing in about there most dramatic scenes. I don't
believe anybody has written about the one that brings a tear to my eye every
time I have seen it. ( At least 50 or more times according to Old Ethel ) my
wife. My favorite heart grabber is Mr. McBevee. I just breaks my heart to
see Andy lose faith in his son and then to regain it only to see he was
right. When Mr. McBevee answers Andy out in the woods my heart just breaks.
There is nothing more touching than a father and son seeing eye to eye on
trust and honesty.....Jimbo "Dr. Pendyke Seay"

I always love that scene. It's so hilarious.
I could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure that your not supposed to understand
what Opie says. That's why Andy laughs.

Oh and one more thing......how come on the last post, everything was in
Italics??

lots of luck to you and yours

Subject: Overals

All this discussion on whether Opie ever wore overals brought to mind
that when my sister & I were small younguns, back in the 30s, we wore
overals as our play clothes during the day. Mama used to take us with
her to the local A& P store & being regular customers, we of course
knew the manager. He would say " Hi boys" & my sister & I would reply
very indignantly that we were girls not boys. And of course his reply
was always but You are wearing overals . We eventually came to realize
that was his way of teasing us, & were quite delighted one day when he
brought his own little boy over to our house to meet us.

Subject: Question for the Experts

During the credits at the end of at least two episodes I watched recently (A
Feud is a Feud and Stranger in Town), I noticed the role of "Script
Continuity" which was held by Hazel Hall. This title would suggest that her
job was to either make sure inconsistencies in the script (i.e., Clara
Edwards, Clara Johnson, and Bertha Johnson being the name of one character)
were avoided or that the script "flowed". What were the actual
responsibilities of this role?

Subject: Opie's garbled line

>>>Anyway, my question is, I was watching the episode the other night, "The
Merchant of Mayberry." Opie comes
in the courthouse stuffing gum in his jaws and says something that I just
cannot understand.
>>>

For those who don't know what we're talking about, it's the scene where Opie
comes into the courthouse and tells Andy about the crowd at Weaver's. Opie
has crammed probably an entire package of gum in his mouth, and can't speak
clearly. Andy asks, "Did you notice, was anybody over at Bert Miller's
stand?" and Opie's reply is unintelligible, due to the huge wad of gum in
his mouth. Then Andy says, "Never mind," and heads out the door.

I've played that scene a hundred times, and all I can come up with is "I
couldn't see the stand." This MIGHT be the correct line, then again, the
script may have just said something like "Opie mutters something
unintelligible here."

I'm getting sidetracked (as I am wont to do), but it's like the time Tom
Lehrer suddenly stopped singing in the middle of the song "My Hometown" and
said "we're recording tonight, so I'll have to leave this line out...." For
YEARS fans have tried to guess what that line could be, but if we knew what
it was, somehow that would ruin it. For those of you who have never heard
of Tom Lehrer, you've been depriving yourself of the most brilliant satirist
who ever lived. He recorded three comedy albums about 40 years ago, then
retired from the music business and became a professor.

Hey folks,

Here's the story about the Nationals coming this weekend but this one has a
really neat photo of Kenneth Junkin that you ought to see.

Subject: Overall ?

Opie is never seen wearing overalls in any episode, so it's very strange
that Aunt Bee would say that. Almost nobody wears overalls in Mayberry;
outside of the Darling family, I can think of only two regular characters
who ever do. Who can name them? By "regular characters" I mean they appear
in at least 6 episodes (Frankie Flint, Rafe Hollister, and Jeff Pruitt do
not qualify).

- - --Paul
Now I don't rightly know their names, but I seem to remember a couple of
regular background people wearing overalls. They were sitting on a bench on
the sidewalk whittlin' and wearing suit coats over their overalls when the
movie producers were coming to town--you know, kinda trying to dress the
place
up.

Hello fellow TAGS fans!

In the last digest everyone was bringing up "The Loaded Goat" episode for
reasons other than what I am writing about. But seeing it mentioned did
bring up something I have noticed on that episode that bothers me. It is the
way that show ended, with Andy and Barney leading the goat out of town with
the harmonica music. What I am wondering is what ever happened to that goat?
Did he still go "blooey"? Did he eventually dilute the dynamite enough to
get rid of it? I have wondered and worried about that goat! What a thing to
worry about, right? Just wanted some thoughts on the matter.

Have a good day! :)

Allan or Crystal,

A friend of mine mentioned something about an event in AL this
weekend...Said she thought it was something about a Squad Car meeting.

I won't be able to go, but maybe one of y'all have some info on this and
could let the folks know..

My apologies if this has been covered and maybe I missed it.

Also, one of our members sent me Rodney Dillards new site (thanks Francie)
http://www.mayberryvalues.com

It tells how to go see Rodney's show in Branson, as well as has some CD and
Tape sales for The Dillards (There is a Time and First Time Live), as well
as Rodney's Gospel Tape, a tape that his wife Beverly did, and also, the
book Everybody on the truck.

In today's episode, the 't.v. men' are actually bank robbers, Andy introduced
Goober as Goober Beasley? I thought he was Gomer Pyle's cousin Goober Pyle...

In Bonanza yesterday, TAGS producer Danny Thomas' daughter, Marlo, played a
Chinese girl. I wonder how many Asian people were offended by her portrayal &
strange accent?

I believe that scene is from "The Beauty Contest" when everybody is trying to
get Andy to pick their wives, girlfriends, daughters, etc. as the winner of
the pageant. He's running to the court house to get away from everyone.

I just wanted to write and report that I can finally watch TAGS again. My
cable company has finally gotten wise and added TVLAND to its lineup. I
can't begin to tell you how happy I am. If only they would have gotten it
sooner, then I could have enjoyed the marathon this past weekend. Well,
maybe next time.

That's a good question on the two regular cast members that have worn

Beats me on the other one.

Subject: This One's For Linda P.

This here is for our Linda who is a fan of the "I Love Lucy Show" and
mentioned the "uh oh" lady you can often hear in the audience. I have read
that she is none other than Dee Dee, Lucy's own mother who attended
every taping of the show.
Now, for my trained noticer's observation (which most of you have already
noticed, but hey, let me have this little gem, ok? okay.).
Did you ever notice how Gomer is a wonderful singer in all the earlier
episodes of Andy except when he is about to leave the show and join the
Marines and he comes marching in singing the Marines' hymn and he sounds
awful? Did you ever wonder why? I mean, what happened to that wonderful
voice of his?
And even if I'm remembering the order of the shows wrong (because I'm too
lazy to look them up) still Gomer goes from a lousy singer to a fantastic
one and we know that shouldn't happen, not without the aid of Mrs. Poultice
(I just gave you an A in breathing). So, I get credit for
noticing SOMETHING.
And another thing, I was catching up on the Digests and someone noticed
the breath coming out of Andy's or Barney's mouth and wondered about it
being cold in CA. I don't know if the show was ever filmed at night and
I always assumed it wasn't, but I've been to that state and it can get
cold, especially at night and one can see one's breath. I'm not sure that's
what is being seen on the film, but if they ever filmed after dark, it would
be possible since filming took place during fall/winter
months. I'm curious about this myself. Maybe some of you really good
trained noticers could answer this for us.

Laura Lee Hobbs, dime store clerk & gold truck watcher extraordinaire
Barney on crime:
"There's really three reasons there's so little crime in Mayberry: There's
Andy, and there's me, and (patting his pistol) Baby makes three."

Subject: about that jailhouse window......

Got a question for all of you trained noticers. In the Christmas episode
when Ben is
peeking through the jail house bars...there are just bars....so did all
of that cold chilly
December air creep into the jailhouse? Never noticed that before.
Another question...
I know this was asked a long time ago but wasn't Mayberry in a dry
county? So how
come Ben said he sold spirits at his store? It just don't make no sense
a'tall

A serious moment I like on TAGS is the episode "class reunion" At the
end when Barn and
Andy are talking, their dialog is touching and Barney ends it with "do
the tears on your
pillow bespeak the pain in your heart?" If I recall andy and Sharon's
dialog didn't have
a laugh track. Like so many others this episode makes me cry.

Have a Mayberry Day!!
Pauline (gomerseyshey)

P.S. The marathon was great. My whole family sat and watched . a really
great
weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!
