Does Thelma Lou have a job? I don't recall ever hearing what she did for a living. She had a nice house and was making fudge all the time with those expensive nuts - she went dutch with Barney and even paid for all of Gomer's lunch ( that time he drove her to the dentist)wonderin' if anyone knows the answer to this question. Earlier this week the News & Record here in Greensboro, N.C., ran a short item--all in fun--on the front page of the paper noting that the local CBS affiliate, WFMY-TV, a longtime supporter of TAGS, would have to preempt an episode of TAGS (Aunt Bee's appearance on the TV game show) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. because the station would be airing UNC-Greensboro's first round NCAA men's basketball game against Stanford. Well, a sports writer from San Diego didn't note that the paper had tongue firmly in cheek and thought it was another example of bucolic North Carolina and its backward ways. Here is the San Diego writer's article: http://www.news-record.com/sports/local/sandiego18.htm And here is New & Record columnist Ed Hardin's witty reply. Ed's apparently a TAGS fan himself: http://www.news-record.com/sports/hardin/sandiego.htm Mickey McLean Greensboro, N.C. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 21:04:31 -0500 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Greetings Sincere condolences to Tommy Merricks on the loss of your father; remember you will be reunited some day; in the meantime know that he is looking out for you along with other loved ones. Guess I was being neev (as Barn pronounced it) but I can't help being proud that I finally found a subject that hadn't been done a thousand times before. Every time I've written in, I've found out later that the subject had been done to death three months before - and worse yet, sometimes I inadvertently started some controversy. Really makes me feel good, because NOBODY loves their TAGS like me. Last weekend was better than any therapy or pill for making me feel good about life. Long live TAGS. :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 22:51:20 -0600 From: "Linda Poindexter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Moonshinin' Did you say large pickle jars? Slemp" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: this n' that I'm mostly a lurker here but I have some questions of y'all that have been around here longer than me. I'm watching the episode right now where Weaver's all upset about Bert Miller. Anyone notice at the end where the Stevens Dep't Store is there to get their merchandise that it is spelled wrong? If his name is Stevens, the truck should say Stevens' Department Store, not Steven's Department Store. I guess what made me notice it was that I live in a Stevens County and I see people make that mistake all the time. I just found out that I have a few more dollars than I thought I had and I'm wanting to start getting Mayberry stuff. Any suggestions? I'm already planning to get the Mayberry Bible Study book. If the watches were still available or I could get a Barney Official Deputy shirt, I'd get that but that's not available. Incidentally, does anyone know what kind of shirt that was? And what color was the tie? Brown or Black? Now lastly and with the permission of the owner of this list, I'd like to ask if anyone would be interested in doing a possible online Bible study with the Mayberry book, please e-mail me privately. I live in a very small town and no one would be interested in that around here. The mere mention of a Bible study based on a television show is almost considered blasphemy with this crowd. But you know how Yankess are sometimes. :) All the best to you and yours, greenbug ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 06:01:18 -0500 From: Trisha Kern <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Congratulations Johnny!! Trish aka Emma ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Mar 2001 14:37:46 -0500 From: "April Starnes" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Otis did what?? On the colored episode where Opie and a new boy (Billy) compete for the job in the grocery store, at the beginning of the episode Andy comes in complaining about his hard day to Aunt Bee. He talks about a boy getting mad at his brother and driving his car into the marsh. Then he says Otis got gassed, drove his car into (some kind of) a garden, Andy arrested him and he wanted to fight. I couldn't believe Otis would actually drink and drive! I know on the episode where Otis buys the car Andy and Barny are worried about just that so they try to trick him into giving up driving. Otis tells them he sold his car BEFORE he took his first drink ( in that episode). But in the episode with Opie & the boy Andy says Otis was driving while "gassed". Another thing I wondered about was when Aunt Bee tells Andy she is dating the butter and egg man from Mt. Pilot (so he won't feel guilty for going out and leaving her at home) Baney says, "The local boys weren't good enough for h! er." WHY did they have a delivery man all the way from Mt. Pilot ( Barney: It's just over to Mt. Pilot, it's just 12 miles!) instead of someone in town? I know in the episode where Mr. Rigsby has to move so they can build a new road, they say HE was the egg man. Course we all know what happened to him....he was running a steel in his "cellar". But it looks like they would have more butter and egg men IN town. Did anyone else ever notice that? Charlene: Why don't I fix you and your gun hand a mouthfull to eat? Andy: Ah, well.. Charlene: I could heat up some nice hog backbone or some fish muddle. I enjoyed the episode with Barney's cousin Virgil so much the other night! Almost every scene had something in it that us trained noticer's are always talking about! Like the license plate on the squad car. I noticed that it was JL-327. In addition, the bus Virgil came in on and left on had Macon on the front of it. Now, the episode opens with Barney asleep in the back room. Andy comes in and catches him and decides to have a little fun with 'ole Barn and tucks the covers underneath the bed posts. Now here is where I noticed something new! At the head of the bed, is a picture on the wall of Andy, Opie and Aunt Bee. And on the wall the bed is against, is a picture of Andy and Barney. I could not believe I had never noticed those before! And, speaking of pictures, this episode gives those who are having trouble catching that photo of a young Francis in the Taylor home a chance to see it up close. Barney and Virgil go to the Taylor's for supper (and did you notice those matching salt 'n pepper's?!!) and after Virgil has made Andy a nervous wreck and he and Barney are getting ready to leave, Andy, Aunt Bee, Barney and Opie are standing by the front door. Now this is right before Andy has his next heart attack of the night when he learns that Virgil went to pull the car up for Barney. Right behind Andy's shoulder, you get a real good look at Aunt Bee's young photo. (I seem to remember seeing this photo in the first episode when Aunt Bee first comes to live with Andy and Opie. So, Andy must have always had that photo). And, there goes the 'ole glass in the bookcase again! And we were just talking about Otis' jobs. Just when he is due to meet Oscar Skinner about that job in the feed store, 'ole Virg. goes and polishes the jail cell keys so good that they will not open the cell door! Leave it to Andy to instill confidence and courage in Virgil and get Otis to his appointment on time. I also noticed that when Andy was looking for tools to open the cell door with, he was looking in the bottom right hand drawer of the desk. It seemed to be the junk drawer with all that rummaging he was doing! Moreover, did you notice that cigarette Andy smoked while Virgil got the cell door open? I love the line Andy uses just after Barney pulls the cell window out of the wall, "Congratulations, Barney! You did it again." And did you see that fake background behind Barney in that shot. A fence with two sad little trees sticking up behind it. In addition, we here some about Barney's family. You know, they are sensitive on his Mother's side. In all the noticing I did, I missed one thing that I am hoping someone can help me clear up. At the end when the credits ran, I noticed that Ronnie's Dad, Rance was in this episode. Who was he? Was he the bus driver? I didn't look at him close enough, but seem to remember someone on here once saying that Rance was the bus driver. I will know to look for him next time. Another Mayberry reference on "Norm" later that evening. Norm and a little Cuban boy he is taking care of are watching TV. "Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C" comes on and the Hector, the little boy says, "In my country, we call it 'America's Finest Soldier'"! I thought that was great! And, later they watched 'I Love Ricky', or as we know and love it, "I Love Lucy." Sorry to go on and on, but I just loved this one! 'Say hello to your Daddy now, and go out and ACT like somebody!' Stephanie 'It's me! It's me! It's Ernest T!' ------------------------------ End of wbmutbb-digest V3 #88 **************************** ************************************************** ~ Visit our sponsor ~ Weaver's Department Store ~ http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/weavers/ ************************************************** You must send your comments to the Digest from the address you used to join WBMUTBB or your message will not be posted.
